Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Wanted Claire’s LifeVanessa stopped cooperating.

Her attorney blamed confusion.
Detective Hayes called it selective memory.
Claire called it exactly what it was.
Another betrayal.
For two days, Vanessa refused to answer questions about the fake messages.
Then Derek’s attorneys released a statement to several reporters.
Mr. Whitmore is a devoted father facing a private marital crisis that has been distorted through incomplete recordings and financial speculation.
By noon, a clipped video appeared online.
It showed Claire shouting, “Don’t touch him!”
It did not show Vanessa lunging first.
It showed Claire stepping toward Vanessa.
It did not show Vanessa slap herself.
The caption read:
PREGNANT HEIRESS IN DOMESTIC MELTDOWN.
Claire stared at her phone.
Mara took it away.
“Stop reading.”
“They believe him.”
“Some people believe a twenty-second clip.”
“My son’s face is blurred, but everyone knows.”
“Which is why we’re seeking sanctions.”
Claire paced the apartment.
“He’s doing it again.”
“Yes.”
“He lost the private story, so he’s making a public one.”
“Yes.”
“I want to respond.”
“No.”
Claire glared.
Mara stayed calm.
“If you defend yourself emotionally, he’ll point to your emotion as proof.”
“So I say nothing?”
“You say what matters through evidence.”
Claire hated it.
That night, she watched Vanessa’s old interview again.
Not because Mara approved.
Because something bothered her.
Vanessa claimed she had recorded Derek because she stopped trusting him.
Yet she had also fabricated Claire’s messages.
Why would she protect herself from Derek while deepening the conspiracy?
Claire replayed one sentence.
He promised he was leaving her.
Then another.
I believed some of it.
Claire paused.
Vanessa had not only wanted money.
She wanted Claire removed.
From the marriage.
From the house.
From motherhood, at least temporarily.
Vanessa wanted the space Claire occupied.
That made her dangerous in a different way than Derek.
Derek wanted control.
Vanessa wanted replacement.
The next morning, Hayes confronted her with the laptop evidence.
This time Vanessa confessed.
Derek gave her Claire’s password.
He told her to send the messages from Claire’s account while Claire was at a medical appointment.
“Why you?” Hayes asked.
“He wanted distance.”
“From the crime?”
“Yes.”
“Did you understand you were creating false evidence for a custody case?”
Vanessa began crying.
“Yes.”
“Then why did you do it?”
Her answer was barely audible.
“I wanted him to choose me.”
Claire watched the recording without blinking.
Vanessa continued.
“Every time I questioned him, he said Claire had all the power. The money. The children. The house. He said until Claire lost something, she’d never let him go.”
Hayes leaned forward.
“And you believed that?”
“I wanted to.”
The sentence was the first honest thing Claire had heard Vanessa say.
Hayes asked, “Did you want Claire to lose custody?”
“Temporarily.”
“There is no harmless version of framing a mother as dangerous.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Vanessa wiped her face.
“He said after Claire signed the agreement, everything would go back to normal.”
“For Claire?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Hayes slid another document across the table.
A contract recovered from Derek’s personal laptop.
Vanessa read it.
Her face slowly changed.
“What is this?”
“An agreement drafted three days before the incident.”
It provided Vanessa with $50,000 in exchange for confidentiality and termination of all consulting arrangements.
Her promised apartment was gone.
The $750,000 final payment was gone.
There was also language stating that any misconduct committed by Vanessa outside written instructions was solely her responsibility.
Derek had prepared to abandon her.
“He told me the million was guaranteed.”
“It wasn’t.”
“He said—”
Hayes interrupted.
“Mr. Whitmore appears to have planned for the possibility that you would take the blame.”
Vanessa stared at the paper.
Claire understood the expression.
It was the look of someone seeing Derek clearly for the first time.
Vanessa whispered, “He was going to say the slap was my idea.”
“Was it?”
“Yes.”
“The fake messages?”
“He told me to send them.”
“The attack?”
“He told me to grab Oliver.”
Hayes leaned closer.
“Can you prove that?”
Vanessa’s eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
She had one recording she had not surrendered.
Not because it protected Derek.
Because it implicated her completely.
The recording was from the night before the attack.
Derek: “You reach for Oliver.”
Vanessa: “What if she doesn’t react?”
Derek: “She will.”
Vanessa: “And if she doesn’t?”
A pause.
Derek: “Make her.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Vanessa: “How?”
Derek: “You’re smarter than that.”
Then Vanessa laughed.
Not nervously.
Excitedly.
Claire closed the video.
Mara looked at her.
“I know.”
“No,” Claire said. “I kept trying to decide which one of them was manipulated by the other.”
“And?”
“They chose each other.”
For the first time, Claire stopped seeing Vanessa only as Derek’s mistress.
Vanessa was an adult who had repeatedly chosen cruelty.
Derek had exploited her desires.
That did not erase her agency.
That evening, another forensic alert reached Hayes.
Someone had attempted remote access to Thomas Bennett’s security archive.
The attempt failed because the emergency trigger had automatically changed the encryption keys.
The login originated from Whitmore Capital’s office network.
Derek had tried to erase the footage.
Mara smiled grimly.
“He really hates your father’s security system.”
Claire looked toward the mansion window.
Her father had been dead three years.
Yet one silver button had defeated a plan that had taken Derek months to build.
Hayes called again ten minutes later.
“This gets worse.”
“What now?”
“We searched Derek’s office server under the expanded warrant.”
“And?”
“We found a folder titled POST-HARBOR.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“What was after Harbor?”
“A petition.”
“For what?”
Hayes hesitated.
“To sell the mansion.”
Claire looked around the home her father had helped her buy.
“Derek can’t sell my house.”
“No.”
“Then why draft it?”
“Because the petition isn’t in Derek’s name.”
Claire’s voice disappeared.
May you like
“Whose?”
“Oliver’s.”
