Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s VersionVanessa Cross requested an attorney before speaking again.

For twenty-four hours, she said nothing.

Then she asked for Detective Hayes.

Claire was not allowed inside the interview room.

She watched through recorded footage later with Mara’s permission after Vanessa’s attorney agreed that portions could be shared in the family-court investigation.

Vanessa looked different without the emerald dress.

Gray sweater.

No makeup.

Hair tied back.

Still beautiful.

No longer theatrical.

Hayes sat opposite her.

“How long have you known Derek Whitmore?”

Vanessa looked at her attorney.

“Three years and eight months.”

Claire stopped the video.

Three years.

Before Thomas died.

Mara restarted it.

Vanessa continued.

She had met Derek at a charity finance dinner.

Their relationship began as professional networking.

Then private dinners.

Then an affair.

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“Was his wife pregnant?”

“No.”

“Did you know he was married?”

“Yes.”

“Did Thomas Bennett know about you?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Hayes slid a copy of Derek’s old email across the table.

Vanessa stared at the visible V.

“That was me.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

Hayes asked, “What did ‘easier to handle’ mean?”

“At the time? I thought Derek meant emotionally.”

“And now?”

Vanessa’s laugh sounded hollow.

“Now I think he meant financially.”

She described Derek’s resentment toward Thomas Bennett.

The prenup.

The trust.

The mansion Claire owned before marriage.

“He said Thomas treated him like a guest in his own life.”

Hayes leaned back.

“So you helped him take control.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“I helped him create pressure.”

“You attacked a pregnant woman holding an infant.”

“I know what I did.”

“No. I’m asking whether the attack was planned.”

Vanessa looked away.

“The confrontation was.”

“What does that mean?”

“I was supposed to provoke her.”

“How?”

“Take Oliver from her arms.”

Claire’s fingers curled.

Mara paused the video.

“Do you want to stop?”

“No.”

Vanessa continued.

“Derek said Claire would panic. He said she’d shove me or scratch me. Anything physical.”

“And if she didn’t?”

Vanessa’s silence answered.

“The slap,” Hayes said.

Vanessa stared at the table.

“I made that up in the moment.”

“So Derek didn’t instruct you to hit yourself?”

“No.”

“Did he know you might fake an injury?”

“He told me we needed visible evidence that Claire had lost control.”

Hayes watched her.

“And the million dollars?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I was supposed to get an apartment.”

“Through a consulting contract?”

“Derek said he couldn’t move marital money directly without Claire noticing.”

“So he disguised your payment.”

Vanessa nodded.

Hayes asked the question Claire wanted answered most.

“Why?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“He promised he was leaving her.”

Claire felt no surprise.

Only humiliation.

“He told me Claire was emotionally abusive. Controlling. That she used her father’s money to keep him trapped.”

Mara muttered, “Of course.”

Vanessa opened her eyes again.

“I believed some of it.”

“Some?”

“I knew he lied.”

Hayes did not soften.

“But you participated anyway.”

“Yes.”

“What did you know about the trust?”

“Not twenty-eight million. Not exactly.”

“What did you know?”

“That Claire had money Derek couldn’t touch.”

“And the custody plan?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“He said once Claire was evaluated, he’d get temporary custody. He said she would sign financial papers to avoid a public fight.”

“Coercion.”

“He called it leverage.”

The word landed heavily.

Vanessa reached into her attorney’s folder.

“I recorded him.”

Hayes’s posture changed.

“When?”

“Several times.”

“Why?”

“Because I stopped trusting him.”

She handed over a phone.

“There’s one from Monday night.”

The recording began.

Derek’s voice.

Calm.

“If she signs the stabilization agreement, this ends.”

Vanessa asked, “And if she doesn’t?”

“Then the custody petition goes forward.”

“She’ll hate you.”

“She can hate me from a therapist’s office.”

A pause.

Vanessa’s recorded voice sounded uncertain.

“And us?”

Derek laughed quietly.

“Don’t become sentimental now.”

The interview-room Vanessa flinched hearing it again.

Then came another exchange.

Vanessa: “You promised once this was done, we’d be together.”

Derek: “First I need control.”

Vanessa: “Of the company?”

Derek: “Of everything.”

Claire felt the room tilt.

Hayes stopped the recording.

“Why didn’t you give this to us yesterday?”

“Because giving it to you destroys my life.”

“You attacked a pregnant woman.”

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“My life was already destroyed.”

Claire stood.

“I’m done.”

She walked into the hallway.

Mara followed.

Claire leaned against the wall.

“She knew him before Dad died.”

“Yes.”

“She knew he wanted the trust.”

“Part of it.”

“And she still entered my home.”

“Yes.”

Claire cried then.

Not loudly.

Not because Vanessa had slept with her husband.

That betrayal felt almost ordinary compared with everything else.

She cried because for three years Derek had come home from Vanessa and kissed Oliver’s future mother.

Because when Thomas died, Derek held Claire at the funeral while already telling another woman that Claire would be easier to control afterward.

Her grief had occurred inside a marriage that did not exist.

Mara waited.

Eventually Claire wiped her face.

“What happens to Vanessa?”

“That depends on prosecutors.”

“She should face consequences.”

“She probably will.”

“But she can help us.”

“Yes.”

Claire hated both truths.

Her phone rang.

Hayes.

“We finished extracting the remote’s emergency archive.”

“I thought you already had seventy-two hours.”

“We do.”

“So what’s new?”

“There’s a secondary file.”

Claire frowned.

“My father’s system automatically backed up documents displayed near the study camera during emergency mode. Optical capture. Old security feature.”

“What documents?”

“One page Derek held up on Tuesday night.”

Claire’s pulse quickened.

“What does it say?”

Hayes was silent for a moment.

“It’s a letter addressed to a psychiatrist.”

“About me?”

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

May you like

“Who wrote it?”

“According to the signature line, you did.”
