Chapter 10 - What He Planned After ClaireThe proposed petition was legally absurd in its unfinished form.

That did not make its intent less horrifying.
Derek’s lawyers had drafted a request suggesting that if Claire were incapacitated and the Bennett trust required restructuring for the children’s welfare, trust-owned residential assets should be liquidated.
The mansion would be sold.
Another property would follow.
Proceeds would be placed into a managed portfolio.
Managed by Whitmore Capital.
“He was trying to turn everything into liquid assets,” Eli Rosen explained.
Claire sat at the dining table where she once hosted Oliver’s baptism dinner.
“Even my home.”
“The trust owns part of the property through an estate-planning structure. You control it. Derek doesn’t.”
“But if he controlled me…”
Mara finished.
“He believed he could control what you controlled.”
The POST-HARBOR folder contained more.
A draft announcement that Derek and Claire were separating due to Claire’s health needs.
A prepared statement expressing Derek’s devotion to his children.
An email to a public-relations consultant discussing “narrative stabilization.”
And an apartment listing.
Five bedrooms.
Central Park views.
Derek’s proposed new residence.
Claire stared at the floor plan.
Two children’s bedrooms had been marked.
OLIVER.
BABY.
One master bedroom.
One guest room.
One room labeled V.
Vanessa.
Claire pushed the document away.
“He had already designed where my children would sleep.”
Mara looked at her gently.
“Temporarily, if his plan worked.”
“That doesn’t make it better.”
“No.”
Claire imagined Oliver waking in an unfamiliar bedroom.
Derek telling him Mommy was sick.
Vanessa carrying him into a nursery she had helped steal.
Claire went to the bathroom and vomited.
When she returned, Hayes had arrived.
He carried a clear evidence sleeve containing a black phone.
“Burner device recovered from Derek’s office.”
Messages had been deleted.
Forensics recovered fragments.
D: THURSDAY WINDOW IS BEST.
G: NOTARY IS HANDLED.
D: SECTION 6 STILL REQUIRES EVELYN.
G: THEN GET EVELYN.
Another message.
D: ONCE CLAIRE SIGNS, HARBOR CAN CLOSE FRIDAY.
G: IF SHE REFUSES?
D: SHE WON’T HAVE THE CHILDREN LONG ENOUGH TO REFUSE.
Claire read the final line twice.
Mara’s face turned white.
“Who is G?”
“Probably Gavin,” Hayes said. “We’re confirming device records.”
Claire stood at the window.
Derek had talked about Oliver as leverage in a financial transaction.
Not as their son.
As time pressure.
“How soon before Derek is charged?”
“Charging decisions belong to prosecutors.”
“He’s walking around Manhattan.”
“He is under a temporary protective order related to you. He has surrendered his passport as a condition in the separate proceeding and is being monitored.”
“But he can still talk.”
“Yes.”
“He can still lie.”
“Yes.”
Claire looked at Hayes.
“What do people like Derek do when the story stops working?”
Hayes considered the question.
“They usually find a new story.”
Derek did.
The next day, through his attorneys, he blamed Gavin.
Gavin had designed the financial plan.
Gavin had misunderstood Derek’s concerns.
Vanessa acted independently.
Derek had simply been a desperate husband trying to protect his children and failing business.
Then he blamed Claire’s father.
Thomas Bennett’s restrictive estate plan had placed unbearable pressure on the marriage.
Derek described himself as humiliated.
Excluded.
Treated like a financial outsider.
When Claire read the statement, she felt almost nothing.
The spell was ending.
Derek needed every cruelty to be somebody else’s fault.
Thomas made him resentful.
Claire made him desperate.
Vanessa made him unfaithful.
Gavin made him criminal.
Money made him dishonest.
No version of Derek’s life contained Derek as the cause.
That evening, Claire asked Mara a question she had avoided.
“What if I missed all of this because I loved him?”
“You missed it because he worked very hard to hide it.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Mara sighed.
“Love makes people generous with explanations.”
Claire nodded.
“I explained everything for him.”
The long hours.
The resentment.
The comments about her father.
The secrecy around money.
Vanessa.
Even before Claire knew about the affair, there had been perfume on Derek’s coat once.
He said it came from a crowded fundraiser.
She believed him.
“Generosity without boundaries becomes permission,” Claire said.
Mara studied her.
“You’re learning fast.”
“I had an expensive teacher.”
A knock sounded at the apartment door.
Security checked first.
Then allowed the visitor inside.
Vanessa.
Mara immediately stood.
“You cannot be here.”
Vanessa raised both hands.
“My lawyer knows.”
Claire looked at her.
“What do you want?”
Vanessa’s face was exhausted.
“To give you something before Derek destroys it.”
She placed a flash drive on the table.
Mara did not touch it.
“What is that?”
“Every recording.”
“You already gave police recordings.”
“Not every one.”
Claire stared.
“Why?”
“Because one of them proves I knew more than I admitted.”
“Then take it to Hayes.”
“I will.”
“Why come here?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because you deserve to hear what your husband said about your children before a prosecutor turns it into evidence.”
Claire’s body went cold.
Vanessa continued.
“I thought Derek wanted your money.”
Claire said nothing.
“He did.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“But that wasn’t the part he cared about most.”
“What was?”
May you like
Vanessa looked at Oliver sleeping in the next room.
“Winning.”
