Chapter 17 - Vanessa’s Review

A year after lobby incident, Vanessa received performance review.
Her new manager rated her strong in operations accuracy.
Mixed in judgment.
She expected Marcus involvement.
None.
She asked Elena:
“Did he say anything?”
“No.”
Vanessa looked surprised.
“Nothing?”
“This isn’t his review.”
That may have been most important consequence.
Marcus’s identity no longer hovered over her daily career.
Vanessa had completed training, contributed to controls and received no new complaints.
Her salary remained below former client-services role.
She accepted.
Would she ever return to front desk?
She decided no.
“I don’t want job built around reading people in three seconds.”
Her manager replied:
“Fair.”
Vanessa began evening classes in organizational psychology.
Not redemption.
Growth.
One day she saw Marcus in cafeteria.
He wore same gray jacket.
She smiled awkwardly.
“Still have that?”
“Yes.”
“You did that on purpose first day.”
Marcus considered.
“Partly.”
Vanessa raised eyebrow.
He admitted:
“I wanted to know what happened if I didn’t look like founder.”
“That feels like test.”
“I know.”
“You told me it wasn’t.”
“I was being too clever.”
She almost laughed.
Marcus continued:
“You still made your own decision.”
“Yes.”
“But I also staged conditions.”
“Yes.”
Two truths.
Vanessa said:
“For what it’s worth, I would stop you differently now.”
“How?”
“Scan badge first.”
Marcus smiled.
“Good.”
Then she added:
“And if it failed, visitor desk.”
“Even if I said I founded company?”
“Especially then.”
May you like
Marcus laughed.
That was the answer.
