Chapter 6 - Room 814

At two in the morning, Room 814 smelled like dust and old paper.

Victor, Lena, Dmitri, and Detective Ruiz entered together.

The brass key still worked.

“That shouldn’t be possible,” Dmitri said.

Victor looked around.

“Thomas must have kept an original lock installed after the renovation.”

Rows of file boxes filled the room.

Old payroll records.

Vendor contracts.

Property tax statements.

The kind of documents nobody thought valuable until someone needed to prove a crime.

Lena searched slowly.

Her father had believed in systems.

If he had hidden something, there would be logic.

She studied the shelves.

Boxes were labeled by year.

The scandal happened eight years earlier.

“Where are the 2018 renovation records?”

Victor checked.

“There should be six boxes.”

Only five remained.

Lena examined the shelf.

Behind one box, someone had written a small pencil mark.

A cross inside a square.

Her throat tightened.

“My dad used that symbol.”

“What did it mean?” Ruiz asked.

“Check twice.”

They removed the box.

Behind it was a narrow metal panel.

The brass key fit a second lock.

Inside sat a blue ledger.

Lena touched the cover.

Her father’s handwriting appeared on the first page.

MERIDIAN.

Her knees almost gave out.

Victor reached toward her, then stopped before touching.

Lena began reading.

Every page contained vendor names, invoice numbers, bank routing information, handwritten calculations.

Thomas had tracked millions.

Not six hundred thousand.

Millions.

Ruiz photographed each page.

Dmitri pointed at one entry.

“Fifteen million to North Shore Development.”

Victor’s face darkened.

“That project never existed.”

Another entry showed nine million.

Another twelve.

Then Lena found a total circled in red pencil.

$42,370,000.

She whispered it.

“Forty-two million dollars.”

Victor leaned over the book.

Below the total, Thomas had written:

MERCER AUTHORIZATION CHAIN.

There were initials beneath it.

L.M.

G.W.

C.W.

Lena stared.

“C.W.”

Victor went still.

Clara Whitmore.

The room changed.

Dmitri swore softly.

Ruiz said, “We don’t know what those initials mean.”

Victor did not answer.

Lena turned the page.

Taped to it was a photocopy of a wire authorization.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Thomas Hart.

Across it, her father had written:

FORGED.

Underneath:

LEON KNOWS I KNOW.

Lena shut her eyes.

For eight years her father had been telling the truth.

Victor stepped away from the ledger.

His voice was rough.

“I destroyed him.”

“You believed Leon.”

“I chose to believe Leon.”

Lena looked at him.

“There’s a difference.”

“Yes.”

Victor did not ask forgiveness.

That mattered.

Then Dmitri noticed something inside the metal compartment.

A small digital recorder.

Ancient by modern standards.

He inserted fresh batteries.

The device clicked.

Thomas Hart’s voice filled Room 814.

“If you are listening to this, either I was wrong about Leon Mercer or I never got the chance to prove I was right.”

Lena covered her mouth.

Her father sounded tired.

Alive.

“I followed Meridian through seven shell companies. Some lead to Mercer. Some lead to the Whitmore family.”

Victor’s face hardened.

Thomas continued.

“But there is something worse. Leon isn’t only stealing from Victor Romano. He is preparing to replace him.”

Everyone froze.

The recording crackled.

“I don’t know how. I only know he has been moving money into accounts controlled by people loyal to him. If Victor dies, Leon will not inherit the family.”

A pause.

“He intends to buy it.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Victor’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Leon Mercer’s voice came through the speaker.

“You should have left the dead man buried.”

Victor’s eyes turned black.

“Where are you?”

Leon laughed softly.

“You locked the wrong doors, old friend.”

The line went dead.

Dmitri checked his messages.

His face changed.

“Leon’s gone.”

“What?”

“He never returned to his suite.”

Ruiz swore.

“How?”

Dmitri looked at Victor.

“The loading dock cameras looped for ninety seconds.”

Victor stared at Thomas Hart’s ledger.

Leon had planned the poisoning.

Leon had prepared an escape.

And Leon had known about Room 814.

Lena gripped the blue ledger.

Her father had been dead three years.

But in that moment, he had finally reached across time and placed his hand on the board.
