Chapter 22 - The Ballroom Reckoning

The Grand Ballroom was dark except for emergency lighting.

Leon stood beside table one.

A champagne glass rested in front of him.

When Victor entered with police behind him, Leon smiled.

“Full circle.”

Victor stopped twenty feet away.

Lena stood behind the police line near the doors.

Leon saw her.

“Of course she came.”

Victor said, “It’s over.”

Leon laughed.

“Men like us don’t get ‘over.’”

“Graham is alive.”

“Graham is weak.”

“Rafe is talking.”

“Rafe was always weak.”

“Crowe too.”

Leon’s smile faded.

Victor continued.

“The accounts are preserved. Thomas’s ledgers are copied. Your vault is seized.”

Leon looked toward Lena.

“You’ve caused me extraordinary trouble.”

Lena replied, “You should’ve ignored the maid.”

Something flashed across Leon’s face.

Anger.

The same anger she had seen after the glass shattered.

Victor noticed.

“You never understood her.”

“I understood her perfectly.”

“No. You understood what you thought poverty would make her.”

Leon’s jaw tightened.

“Desperate.”

Victor shook his head.

“Invisible.”

Lena felt the words.

Victor continued.

“That was your mistake. You thought because you did not see her, she could not see you.”

Leon laughed.

“And you see her now?”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

Leon looked between them.

Then at the champagne glass.

“Do you know why Thomas refused my money?”

Lena said, “Because he wasn’t you.”

Leon’s smile disappeared.

“He could have saved his family years of humiliation.”

“He did save us.”

“From what?”

“Becoming people who think everything has a price.”

Leon’s expression hardened.

Police ordered him to raise his hands.

He did not.

Instead he reached inside his jacket.

Weapons came up instantly.

“Leon!” Victor shouted.

Leon froze.

Slowly, he removed something.

Not a gun.

A lighter.

In his other hand was a folded sheet of paper.

He ignited it.

Dmitri moved.

Leon backed away.

“Stay.”

The page burned.

Lena recognized Thomas’s handwriting.

Her stomach dropped.

“The original ledger page.”

Leon smiled.

“Not everything was copied.”

He let the page fall.

A police officer extinguished it.

Half survived.

Leon seemed satisfied.

Then Lena laughed.

Everyone looked at her.

Leon’s face tightened.

“What?”

“That page was from the blue ledger.”

“So?”

“My father numbered every page.”

Leon looked down.

“He made carbon copies.”

Leon’s face finally changed.

Real fear.

Lena continued.

“The copy is in the green ledger.”

For eight years Leon had believed Thomas hid separate evidence in separate places.

He had never realized Thomas duplicated the critical pages.

Victor almost smiled.

Leon’s power had depended on everyone being less patient than he was.

Thomas had been more patient.

Police ordered Leon down.

This time he complied.

Dmitri cuffed him.

For a second their eyes met.

Nine years of friendship.

Business.

Secrets.

Then Leon looked at Victor.

“You think she made you better?”

Victor said, “No.”

Leon seemed surprised.

Victor continued.

“She made me see what I was already responsible for.”

Ruiz took Leon into custody.

As he passed Lena, he whispered, “Your father died believing the world thought he was a thief.”

Lena’s eyes burned.

She stepped close enough for him to hear.

“No.”

Leon frowned.

“He died knowing I believed him.”

That was all.

No punch.

No scream.

No revenge.

Leon looked almost disappointed.

Then he was taken away.

The ballroom became quiet.

Victor approached Lena.

On the marble floor between them, an old stain from the shattered champagne had resisted complete polishing.

Lena pointed.

“They missed a spot.”

Victor looked down.

“Good.”

“Why good?”

“So I remember.”

She studied him.

“Remember what?”

“That the most important person in the room may be the one everyone trained themselves not to notice.”

For once, Victor Romano did not sound like a mafia boss.

May you like

He sounded like a man who had almost died because he had mistaken visibility for importance.

And somewhere in Lena’s memory, Thomas Hart laughed.
