Chapter 18 - The Trap

They let Leon believe the blue ledger would be moved.

Dmitri leaked a false transport schedule through a security channel Rafe confirmed Leon still monitored.

According to the leak, the ledger would leave the Grandeur at midnight in an armored evidence vehicle.

In reality, police had already copied every page.

The original remained in a secure evidence locker.

The vehicle carried a duplicate.

Victor hated the plan because he was not allowed to ride inside it.

“You are the target,” Ruiz told him.

“That has never prevented me from attending my own meetings.”

“This is not a meeting.”

Victor looked at Lena.

“Tell her.”

Lena smiled.

“You’re staying here.”

Betrayal filled his face.

Dmitri laughed openly.

At 12:08 a.m., the evidence vehicle left the Grandeur.

At 12:17, a black SUV followed.

At 12:24, police stopped both vehicles inside a controlled zone.

The SUV driver surrendered.

The passenger ran.

He was caught two blocks later.

Neither was Leon.

But one carried instructions.

Burn ledger.

Leave Romano alive.

Lena frowned.

“Alive?”

Victor read it again.

Why would Leon, who had tried to poison him, now insist Victor remain alive?

Naomi found the answer.

The attempted assassination had failed.

Leon’s plan changed.

If Victor died now, public sympathy would shift toward him.

Investigators would dig harder.

Leon needed Victor disgraced instead.

Alive.

Accused.

Powerless.

Ruiz questioned the arrested driver.

He identified Leon’s location.

A townhouse in Brooklyn.

Police obtained a warrant.

The house was empty.

But inside they found something stranger.

A dining table set for two.

Fresh coffee.

Two folders.

One labeled VICTOR.

One labeled LENA.

Ruiz opened Victor’s.

It contained evidence of bribery, illegal gambling operations, cash businesses, and payments to city officials.

Victor’s past, documented carefully.

Lena looked at him.

“Is it real?”

“Some.”

“Enough?”

“Yes.”

Ruiz’s expression hardened.

Victor nodded.

“I understand.”

The second folder belonged to Lena.

Inside were forged records connecting Thomas to Meridian.

Fake emails suggesting Lena discovered the scheme years earlier.

A fabricated timeline showing Lena and her father quietly blackmailing Leon.

There were even photographs of Lena meeting men she had never seen.

Some were obviously altered once examined closely.

But on television?

They would look convincing.

Then Lena found a photograph that was real.

Her father.

Thomas Hart standing outside a Brooklyn restaurant.

Beside him was Leon Mercer.

Date stamped six months after Thomas had been fired.

Lena stared.

“Why would Dad meet Leon?”

Victor looked equally surprised.

Behind the photograph was a handwritten note.

HE CAME BACK.

Lena’s chest tightened.

Her father never told her he met Leon after losing his job.

Why?

What had they discussed?

Ruiz searched the townhouse.

In a desk drawer she found a cassette recorder.

The tape inside was labeled:

HART.

They played it.

Thomas’s voice came first.

“You destroyed my name.”

Leon answered.

“I preserved your life.”

Lena stopped breathing.

Thomas said, “That’s a threat.”

“No. A fact.”

“What do you want?”

“Stop investigating Meridian.”

“I won’t.”

“You have a wife. A daughter.”

Lena closed her eyes.

Leon continued.

“You think Victor Romano knows what I did to you? He doesn’t. He signed what I put in front of him because that’s what men like Victor do.”

Victor’s face tightened.

Thomas replied, “Then someday that arrogance will cost him.”

Leon laughed.

“Maybe.”

The tape ended.

Lena wiped tears from her face.

Her father had known Victor was ignorant of the setup.

He had also known Victor was responsible for refusing to question it.

Then Ruiz noticed the second side of the cassette.

She flipped it.

A different recording began.

Leon’s voice.

“I know you copied the accounts, Thomas.”

Thomas answered, “Then you know you’ll never find all of them.”

A pause.

Leon said, “What does that mean?”

Thomas laughed.

The sound filled the room.

For the first time in years Lena heard her father sounding fearless.

“It means you should start wondering what you missed.”

The tape clicked off.

Victor looked at the blue-ledger copy.

May you like

Thomas Hart had hidden more than one record.

And Leon had spent eight years terrified that someday it would surface.
