Chapter 9 - Sarah Loses Her Badge

Blackridge formally terminated Sarah Collins.
The letter arrived by courier.
Reason:
Unauthorized surveillance.
Removal of confidential security data.
Failure to follow chain of command.
Conduct undermining institutional integrity.
Sarah read the final phrase twice.
Then laughed.
Martin did not.
“Appeal.”
“I will.”
“Today.”
“Dad.”
“Today.”
She looked at him.
“You spent my whole childhood telling me chain of command matters.”
“It does.”
“You also told me not to embarrass institution.”
Martin looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Sarah softened.
He had been a different generation.
“When does loyalty stop?”
Martin answered without hesitation.
“When it requires lying about harm.”
Good.
Sarah appealed with union counsel and whistleblower counsel retained through a nonprofit.
Mara provided confirmation that Sarah was a cooperating witness in an active investigation.
The Department of Corrections refused immediate reinstatement.
Publicly, it said personnel matters were confidential.
Privately, Sarah’s firing became a problem for them.
Reporters discovered her identity after court filings referenced “Officer S.C.”
Sarah did not speak.
Not yet.
She wanted victims centered.
Still, headlines came:
GUARD WHO EXPOSED SECRET PRISON CAMERA FIRED
Not exactly.
She had installed camera.
Evidence exposed program.
Mark had also provided recordings.
Priya Shah installed hardware.
Lena Ortiz helped.
Hero headlines simplify institutions into individuals.
Sarah disliked them.
She called Lena.
“You okay?”
“For now.”
“They haven't fired you?”
“Administrative leave.”
“Priya?”
“Transferred.”
“Retaliation?”
“They call it operational need.”
Of course.
Sarah’s whistleblower lawyers added claims.
At Blackridge, Warden Holt remained suspended, not yet charged publicly.
Then federal prosecutors unsealed part of complaint.
Holt arrested on charges involving civil-rights violations, fraud, and obstruction.
Celia Ward also charged.
Caleb Moss charged related to records and system manipulation.
Mark Danner charged separately.
Adrian Voss arrested at an airport after a scheduled business trip? Need not imply flight; he was detained upon return from a conference. Thomas Marwick received a grand-jury subpoena and later charges after evidence. Better.
Northstar announced full cooperation and blamed rogue executives.
Investigators seized servers.
The story exploded nationally.
Only then did Martha choose to speak.
Not on camera.
Through attorney Naomi Bell.
Statement:
I am seventy-one years old. I am incarcerated. I have committed crimes. None of those facts gave anyone permission to use my body for research without informed consent.
No pregnancy details beyond what had become necessary in court.
Evelyn issued separate statement.
Dolores remained private.
Grace spoke publicly under her own name.
Four different choices.
All respected.
Sarah read Martha’s words.
Martin said, “That’s the whole case.”
“No.”
“What?”
“It’s the whole moral case.”
The legal case would take years.
But yes.
A sentence does not transfer ownership of a body to state.
Then Sarah received a package.
No return address.
Inside was a paper logbook from Blackridge.
The physical movement log.
Several pages had been replaced.
Sarah recognized handwriting.
Mark’s.
A note:
CHECK ORIGINAL CARBON COPIES IN ARCHIVE BOX 19. — M
Mark was in detention.
How sent?
Through his attorney, likely.
Sarah immediately turned it over to Mara rather than investigate herself.
Archive box 19 was found in an off-site state records warehouse.
Carbon copies showed original entries:
Martha moved at 2:12 a.m.
Evelyn at 1:47.
Dolores at 3:05.
Grace multiple times.
Then later copies in Blackridge records showed no movement.
Someone physically rewrote logbooks.
Digital fraud had paper backup.
The carbon copies contained initials:
D.H.
Dana Holt.
The warden personally altered custody movement records.
Her defense of ignorance weakened.
Then investigators found one more set of initials.
A.R.
Alan Reese.
Deputy commissioner.
He had signed monthly audit sheets containing contradictory totals.
Either he failed to notice glaring differences or knowingly approved.
His lawyers insisted negligence.
Prosecutors investigated.
Sarah’s firing letter had been authorized by Reese two days before his administrative leave.
Whistleblower retaliation became evidence of consciousness? Lawyers debated.
Public perception turned.
The corrections commissioner—not Reese, the higher official—offered Sarah reinstatement.
She declined immediately.
Martin stared.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I’m not going back while Holt’s structure is still there.”
“Could help change it.”
“Maybe later.”
Sarah wanted time.
She had spent years wearing a badge as identity.
Now she needed to know whether she served people or career.
Martha called from hospital.
“You quit?”
“Technically they fired me, then unfired me.”
“Government efficiency.”
Sarah laughed.
Martha asked, “What are you doing?”
“I don’t know.”
“You're terrible unemployed.”
“It’s been two days.”
“Long enough.”
Then Martha's tone changed.
“Tessa came again.”
Sarah smiled.
“Good?”
“Complicated.”
“Those can coexist.”
“Stop sounding wise.”
They laughed.
Martha then said independent doctors had discussed all medical options with her.
She had made her decision privately.
Sarah did not ask what it was.
Martha noticed.
“Not curious?”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“You’ll tell me if you want.”
Martha became quiet.
“Thank you.”
That single thank-you mattered.
The entire case was about people asking questions they had no right to answer for someone else.
Sarah was learning restraint.
That evening Mara called.
“We found investor presentation.”
Sarah sighed.
“More?”
“Yes.”
A slide titled:
EVERLIFE — HUMAN VALIDATION MILESTONE
Three green checkmarks.
Subject 04.
Subject 06.
Subject 08.
Martha.
Evelyn.
Dolores.
Below:
Next milestone: 5 successful gestational initiations before Series D financing.
They needed two more.
Ruth had been fourth candidate.
Another woman had been selected for fifth.
Name:
Tessa Monroe, sixty-nine.
Currently in Blackridge.
Still there.
Sarah stood.
“Get her out.”
“We are.”
Then Mara added:
“She was placed in isolation this morning.”
Even after raids.
Even after arrests.
Someone inside Blackridge was still trying to continue the protocol.
The conspiracy had not ended with leadership removal.
Sarah realized Everlife had been built into procedures, not just people.
