Chapter 18 - Voss Takes the Stand

Adrian Voss refused a plea.
He insisted Everlife had been legitimate science corrupted by prison administrators.
His trial became battle over consent.
Voss’s lawyers argued he relied on signed forms.
Forensic experts proved signatures copied.
Defense said Voss did not create forms.
Prosecutors showed emails.
Voss to Ward:
Need complete files before Marwick review. Any missing consent should be resolved locally.
Ward replied:
Two subjects refuse.
Voss:
Holt says resolved. Proceed.
“What did resolved mean?”
Voss testified:
“I believed they later consented.”
“Did you speak to them?”
“No.”
“Review new consent?”
“I reviewed files.”
“Same copied forms?”
“Yes.”
“Did you notice every signature exactly matched previous medical documents?”
“No.”
“Because you didn't look?”
“I trusted site.”
Again trust.
Then Ward’s secret video.
Martha clearly said:
“I didn’t consent to this.”
Voss was present by video call.
His face appeared on monitor.
He responded:
We cannot lose another cycle.
That destroyed plausible ignorance.
Defense objected to interpretation.
Video spoke.
Voss argued he thought objection referred to sedation, not study.
Then Evelyn recording:
“I want an attorney.”
Voss:
Handle her before we proceed.
Holt handled.
No lawyer.
Procedure continued.
Jury convicted.
Voss cried at sentencing.
He spoke about decades researching women’s health.
Martha submitted no statement.
Grace did:
If your science needs people who cannot safely refuse, your science is broken before the experiment starts.
Judge quoted.
Voss received substantial sentence and professional sanctions.
Medical/research credentials stripped.
