Chapter 15 - Evelyn Vale Confesses

The press conference was broadcast nationally.

Evelyn wore a navy suit.

No jewelry except her wedding band.

Adrian sat in the front row beside Marcus and Lydia.

Naomi watched from the mansion kitchen with the staff.

Evelyn stepped to the podium.

“My name is Evelyn Vale.”

She paused.

“For more than twenty years, I participated in concealing misconduct committed during my late husband Richard Vale’s leadership of Vale Meridian.”

The room erupted with questions.

She raised one hand.

“I will answer after I finish.”

Then she told the truth.

Not perfectly.

Not beautifully.

She described signing Bastion documents under fear that Adrian could be implicated.

She admitted withholding later evidence suggesting Martin Arden had been framed.

She admitted choosing corporate stability over transparency.

“I believed I was protecting my son,” she said.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“I now understand that love does not excuse cowardice.”

That line spread across news networks within minutes.

She announced a restitution fund for injured former workers and their families.

Personal assets would contribute one hundred million dollars.

Vale Meridian would add more after independent review.

She supported Martin Arden’s formal exoneration.

Then she said his daughter’s name.

“Celeste Arden committed grave crimes against me. Nothing I disclose today excuses those crimes.”

Naomi leaned closer to the television.

“But my victimhood does not erase what my family did to hers.”

Silence.

“Two truths can stand in the same room.”

Afterward, shares fell another six percent.

Evelyn received death threats.

She also received letters from former employees.

Some were furious.

Some grateful.

One came from Martin Arden’s former assistant.

It contained a photograph of Martin laughing at an office picnic before the scandal.

Evelyn cried when she saw it.

Naomi did not comment.

Adrian arrived late that evening.

His mother was in the library.

“You cost me three billion dollars today.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“On paper.”

“Still rude.”

She almost smiled.

Adrian sat.

“I’m proud of you.”

The words broke her.

Not dramatically.

Her shoulders simply folded.

He moved beside her.

For the first time since childhood, Adrian held his mother while she cried.

No manipulation.

No audience.

No performance.

Just grief.

Naomi quietly closed the library doors.

At police headquarters, Celeste watched the press conference on a small television.

When Evelyn acknowledged Martin, Celeste stopped breathing.

Her attorney glanced at her.

“You all right?”

“No.”

She laughed through tears.

“That’s the first decent thing anyone named Vale has done for my father.”

“You still hate her?”

Celeste looked at the screen.

“I don’t know.”

Her attorney sat back.

“That’s probably progress.”

The criminal case continued.

Holt remained defiant.

His attorneys argued Celeste masterminded everything and manipulated Voss.

Then prosecutors produced the recording.

Holt’s position weakened.

Voss agreed to testify.

Claire agreed to testify.

Even Henry agreed to describe Richard’s instructions and Holt’s later pressure.

The conspiracy tightened around its architect.

But one mystery remained.

Who had moved Richard’s missing pages into Project Bastion’s server?

The scan metadata showed the files were uploaded six months earlier.

Before Celeste attacked Evelyn.

Before police reopened anything.

The upload came from the mansion’s network.

Adrian checked logs.

Only one device matched.

Evelyn’s old laptop.

She denied uploading them.

Naomi believed her.

Then Naomi remembered something.

Six months earlier, Celeste stayed overnight at the mansion for the first time.

She had asked to borrow a computer because hers “wouldn’t connect.”

Naomi had given her Evelyn’s old laptop.

Celeste had possessed Page 120 and Page 121.

Or copies.

Why upload them?

Adrian confronted her during a supervised visit.

Celeste looked surprised he had discovered it.

“I needed insurance.”

“Against Holt?”

“Yes.”

“You knew he was dangerous.”

“I suspected.”

“Then why continue?”

“Because he knew where my father’s evidence was.”

“You could have gone to police.”

“With what? A dead man’s suspicion and a billionaire family’s sealed records?”

“You could have come to me.”

Celeste’s expression broke.

“I didn’t know you yet.”

“And after Lisbon?”

She looked away.

“That made it worse.”

“Why?”

“Because then I had something to lose.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You uploaded the pages so if Holt betrayed you—”

“They would eventually surface.”

“Why not send them directly?”

“Because I still wanted revenge.”

At least she was honest.

Adrian stood.

Celeste looked at him.

“Did Evelyn mean what she said?”

“Yes.”

“About my father?”

“Yes.”

Celeste nodded.

Adrian moved toward the door.

“Adrian.”

He stopped.

“I am sorry.”

He did not turn.

“For Mom?”

“For everything.”

He stood there several seconds.

Then said, “I believe you.”

Celeste closed her eyes.

He added:

May you like

“I still can’t forgive you.”

And left.
