Chapter 11 - The Page in the Mirror

Police locked down the mansion again.

No forced entry.

No broken windows.

No alarm.

Whoever entered Evelyn’s bedroom either had a key or had never left the property.

Naomi gathered the overnight staff in the kitchen.

Six employees.

Three nurses.

Two security officers.

One chef.

Every face looked frightened.

Detective Ortiz reviewed access logs.

A service-door camera had gone offline for eleven minutes.

Someone knew the system.

Adrian immediately ordered a full security audit.

Evelyn sat in the library furious.

“I’m beginning to dislike my own house.”

Naomi almost laughed.

“This is the first sensible thing you’ve said all week.”

The missing trust folder was confusing.

Police had already copied its contents.

Why steal an empty folder?

Then Naomi remembered the message.

YOU STILL MISSED ONE PAGE.

“What if they aren’t talking about the trust?”

Ortiz looked up.

“What else?”

“The ledger.”

Adrian turned.

Naomi continued.

“Richard’s ledger had pages cut out near the back.”

Forensic photographs confirmed it.

Two sheets had been removed long before police found the book.

Evelyn stared at the images.

“Richard numbered every page.”

Page 118.

Page 119.

Then 122.

Two missing pages.

“What would be on them?” Adrian asked.

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Naomi looked at the lipstick message.

“Someone thinks we should.”

The answer emerged from Lydia.

She remembered Richard using carbon-copy ledger sheets.

“If he removed originals, impressions may remain on the backing paper.”

Forensic technicians examined page 122 under angled light.

Faint indentations appeared.

Numbers.

A date.

A property address.

Not money.

The address belonged to an old Vale Meridian warehouse in Bridgeport.

Closed for eighteen years.

Adrian wanted to go immediately.

Ortiz refused.

Police obtained a warrant.

Inside the warehouse, they found abandoned office furniture, rusting equipment, and a locked records room.

The lock had been replaced recently.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds.

Vale Meridian archives that should have been destroyed years ago.

Personnel files.

Medical claims.

Accident reports.

And a metal cabinet labeled ARDEN.

Martin Arden’s original investigation.

Celeste’s father had kept copies.

Somehow Richard acquired them.

Among the files was an audio cassette.

Dated twenty-two years earlier.

Ortiz had it digitized.

Richard Vale’s voice filled the evidence room.

“You’re making this larger than it is.”

Martin Arden answered.

“You hid injuries to inflate earnings.”

“I deferred reserves.”

“You falsified them.”

“Watch yourself.”

“I’m going to the board.”

“You’ll destroy the company.”

“No. You did that.”

Then Richard said something that changed the case.

“If you force this, Evelyn signs against you.”

Martin laughed bitterly.

“She knows?”

“She knows enough.”

The recording ended.

Evelyn listened once.

Then asked for it to stop.

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew before the trial.”

“No.”

“He said you did.”

“Richard told Martin that to frighten him.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Richard lied.”

“That answer works too easily now.”

Evelyn flinched.

Naomi watched mother and son drift farther apart.

Celeste heard about the warehouse from her attorney.

She asked to speak with Adrian again.

He refused.

So she wrote him a letter.

He almost threw it away.

Naomi convinced him to read it.

Adrian opened it alone.

Celeste admitted researching him.

Admitted working with Holt.

Admitted participating in the forged trust and Voss’s drugging scheme.

Then she described the day of the attack.

Evelyn had confronted her with Martin’s archived evidence.

Celeste demanded public exoneration for her father.

Evelyn said she would release everything after independent verification.

Celeste did not believe her.

They argued.

Evelyn threatened to call Adrian.

Celeste panicked.

The pillow happened.

Celeste wrote:

I wish I could tell you it was an accident. It wasn’t. I wanted her silent for one terrible minute, and during that minute I became worse than everyone I blamed.

Adrian stopped reading.

Later, he continued.

The final paragraph mattered most.

Holt told me there were two missing pages from Richard’s ledger. He said those pages could destroy Vale Meridian permanently. I never found them. But someone inside your house has been searching since before I attacked Evelyn.

Adrian immediately called Ortiz.

The mansion intruder was not Celeste.

Celeste had been in custody.

Holt had been under surveillance.

Voss was cooperating.

Someone else remained.

Security audit results arrived that night.

The disabled service camera had been accessed using an old administrator account.

The account belonged to Richard Vale.

Impossible.

Richard had been dead nine years.

Then Marcus found the truth.

The account had been reactivated six months earlier.

Authorized by one person.

Adrian’s executive assistant.

Claire Donnelly.

A woman who had worked for him for twelve years.

And who had not shown up for work that morning.
