Chapter 28 - The New Lock

In May, David replaced the front door again.
Not because it was broken. Because he wanted the last change to that door to belong to a different story.
He involved Zoe completely. They went together to choose hardware. Matte brass, simple, strong. No theatrics.
When the locksmith installed it, David handed Zoe the first key cut from the new cylinder.
No speech.
Just the key.
Zoe turned it over in her palm.
Then she surprised herself by saying, “Can I hang the old one in the foyer?”
David blinked. “The useless one?”
“Yeah. In a shadow box. With a little label.”
He stared for a second, then started laughing. “That is the most Evelyn thing you’ve ever suggested.”
So they did it.
Beside the raincoat photo, they hung a small frame containing the old brass key and a typed card beneath it:

The key that stopped working the day the truth had to begin.
When Tasha saw it, she put a hand to her chest and declared it “petty, sacred, and historically accurate.”
