Chapter 26 - Monica Leaves the Story

The final divorce decree came in April.

Monica received less than she wanted, more than Tasha thought she deserved, and precisely enough, Carmen noted dryly, to remind everyone that law is not vengeance. She left with some financial obligation on David’s side, but no claim touching Zoe’s protected interest and no foothold in the house’s future.

Before the decree finalized, Monica requested one last formal property retrieval. This time she came with movers, a checklist, and no performance.

Zoe happened to be home that afternoon, working on an English essay at the kitchen table.

When Monica entered, she paused briefly at the sight of her.

“Hello, Zoe.”

“Hi.”

No venom. No intimacy. Just recognition.

The movers handled boxes. The civil atmosphere was almost eerie.

At one point Monica stood in the foyer beneath the raincoat photo and said quietly, not quite to anyone, “Your grandmother really was everywhere.”

Tasha, who had stopped by “accidentally on purpose,” replied, “Best quality control we ever had.”

Monica actually smiled at that.

Before leaving, she turned to Zoe one last time. “You were right about something.”

Zoe waited.

“You should never have had to ask permission to belong.” Monica took a breath. “I won’t say more. I’ve said enough too late already.”

Then she left.

No grand goodbye. No collapse. Just exit.

And for the first time, Zoe felt no need to watch whether the door closed behind her.
