Chapter 20 - Hart Meadow

Daniel and Claire walked Hart Meadow together for first time in years.

No lawyers.

No Maya.

No Victor.

Just siblings.

Autumn grass.

Pine shadow.

An old fence their grandfather built.

Claire stopped beside stone foundation.

“Remember?”

Daniel smiled.

“Dad’s shed.”

“You burned it.”

“I was twelve.”

“You left gasoline—”

“Stop.”

She laughed.

For several minutes they were children again.

Then the land became serious.

Four hundred twenty acres would enter permanent conservation easement under proposed settlement.

The family would keep ownership but surrender future intensive development rights.

A state conservation fund would pay $1.2 million based on reduced development value.

Enough to clear debt.

The remaining acreage stayed flexible under low-impact zoning.

Claire asked:

“Are you okay with that?”

Daniel looked.

“I wanted all protected.”

“I know.”

“But Mom didn’t.”

“She wanted corridor protected.”

“Yes.”

He stared across meadow.

“I think I was trying to prove I loved her more by wanting more.”

Claire nodded.

“I tried to prove I wasn’t her by wanting sale.”

They both laughed quietly.

Extremes.

Then Claire said:

“I’m sorry.”

“For what part?”

“All parts where I chose silence.”

Daniel kicked small stone.

“I’m sorry I left you with Dad’s bills.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I didn’t ask.”

“That’s different.”

“Still.”

Both.

Then Claire stopped.

“There’s one thing I haven’t told you.”

Daniel groaned.

“Claire.”

“Not conspiracy.”

“What?”

“When Dad died, he left me a handwritten note.”

“And?”

“He wanted ashes scattered here with Mom.”

Daniel stared.

Their parents’ ashes remained separately stored—Elena at family cemetery? Let's make Elena cremated with ashes kept by Daniel? Hmm continuity not established. We can say Elena was buried, Thomas cremated. Better not. Let's adjust: Thomas wanted memorial stone beside Elena's at meadow overlook, but Daniel buried him in town cemetery? Too late. Instead note asks "put a bench here." Not huge.

Claire said:

“He wanted us to put a bench overlooking north ridge.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why hide?”

“I thought it was sentimental manipulation after what he did.”

“Maybe.”

“But I found note again after confession video.”

She handed.

If land survives us, put somewhere two people can sit without solving anything.

Daniel laughed through tears.

“That sounds like Dad.”

They chose place.

Not monument about wolves.

Simple bench.

No names initially? Maybe plaque "Thomas & Elena Hart — Sit First, Decide Later." Could be.

Then a howl sounded far away.

Both stopped.

Claire whispered:

“Wolf?”

“Probably.”

She looked nervous.

Daniel said:

“We stay where we are.”

No chasing.

They listened.

Another howl answered.

Claire smiled.

“I think Mom would have loved this.”

Daniel corrected gently:

“She did.”

Claire nodded.

Then phone rang.

Maya.

Daniel answered.

“Hey.”

Her voice serious.

“You need to see tomorrow’s front page.”

“What?”

“Grant Hale has been charged with falsifying an official wildlife record.”

Daniel exhaled.

The legal arc reached a new stage.

But Maya continued:

“And his attorney says they’ll argue Marcus Bell was real author.”

May you like

Bell’s old sins were being weaponized again.

The final conflicts were entering court, where stories would have to become evidence.
