Chapter 12 - Thomas Hart’s Money

Daniel wanted to assume the worst.
It was easier.
A payment from Victor to Thomas.
One hundred twenty-five thousand dollars.
Date: February 2020.
Six months after Elena’s project collapsed.
Daniel imagined bribe.
Silence money.
Payment for password.
Claire stopped him.
“Look at memo.”
Engineering and access settlement.
“Dad was a teacher.”
“I know.”
“So what engineering?”
Claire opened supporting documents.
Thomas had owned a small construction consulting license before teaching full time.
He occasionally surveyed family land.
Summit Crest had damaged a private access road during early drilling.
Thomas threatened lawsuit.
The $125,000 settled road repair and easement damage.
Not bribe.
At least on paper.
Daniel felt both relief and shame.
Maya, listening from across table, said:
“This is why you don’t write ending before reading document.”
He nodded.
Then another transfer.
$40,000.
No memo.
Claire looked.
This one was suspicious.
They found letter.
Victor to Thomas:
For reimbursement of legal expenses related to North Ridge disputes, without admission.
Thomas accepted money from Victor to cover legal expenses while Elena fought Victor-linked institutions.
Why?
Maybe settlement attempt.
Then Thomas’s video clarified.
Daniel finally watched full recording.
His father sat in cabin.
“Victor paid me forty thousand dollars.”
“I told myself it was reimbursement for road dispute.”
“It wasn’t.”
“He said he wanted Elena to stop publicly accusing Summit Crest.”
“I didn’t tell her.”
Daniel looked away.
Thomas continued:
“I did not sign any gag agreement.”
“I did not promise she would stop.”
“But I took money knowing Victor hoped I would influence her.”
“I tried.”
“Elena refused.”
“She asked where money came from.”
“I lied.”
Claire cried.
Then:
“That was the week she stopped trusting me.”
Thomas’s voice broke.
“I spent rest of marriage trying to repair what I broke without admitting exactly how.”
Maya said nothing.
Thomas continued:
“When Caroline used Elena’s account, I realized my password mistake was part of larger harm.”
“I wanted to confess.”
“I didn’t.”
“Then Elena got sick.”
“Every week I told myself next week.”
“Cowardice can look like patience if you rename it often enough.”
Daniel closed eyes.
Then:
“Claire does not know about forty thousand.”
She whispered:
“I didn’t.”
Thomas:
“Daniel does not know about the option.”
“He will hate me.”
“Maybe he should.”
Then most important:
“I signed land option because debts were real.”
“And because Victor told me the resort was inevitable.”
“But I inserted conservation clause because Elena once told me inevitability is favorite word of people who want you to stop asking questions.”
Daniel almost smiled through tears.
That sounded like her.
Then Thomas admitted he later discovered Summit Crest changed contract.
He threatened suit.
Victor’s attorney said signature pages could be disputed.
Thomas gave original to Bell.
Why not tell children?
“I wanted to fix one thing before telling them how many I broke.”
He never did.
He died months later.
The video ended:
“Daniel.”
“Claire.”
“Your mother deserved better from me.”
“So did you.”
“Do not spend your lives paying my debt to her.”
“Protect meadow if you choose.”
“Sell it if you choose.”
“But choose after truth.”
The screen went dark.
Daniel sat.
Claire reached for his hand.
This time he allowed.
Neither absolved father.
Neither rejected him entirely.
Family truth rarely offered clean verdict.
Then Daniel asked:
“What do we do with video?”
Claire looked.
“Give relevant parts to investigators.”
“Keep personal parts family.”
Good.
Transparency did not require publicizing every confession.
Then Maya’s phone buzzed.
Message from unknown number:
YOU’RE LOOKING AT WRONG FAMILY. ASK WHAT ELENA DID TO CAROLINE REEVES BEFORE THE AUDIT.
Maya showed Daniel.
He frowned.
Claire said:
“Could be bait.”
Maybe.
But it introduced question they had barely asked.
Why did Caroline Reeves turn on Elena?
Money alone?
Career?
Or personal betrayal?
Daniel searched his mother’s notebook.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Caroline.
At first warmly.
Caroline says Ash is smartest wolf we’ve tracked.
Dinner with Caroline and Thomas Friday.
Then months later:
Caroline furious about authorship.
Daniel stopped.
“Authorship?”
Maya leaned closer.
A research paper.
Elena had removed Caroline Reeves as coauthor after discovering unexplained data changes.
Months before scandal.
Caroline did not merely have institutional pressure.
May you like
She had personal motive.
And the battle over wolves may have begun inside Elena’s own research team long before Victor Hale realized how useful it could become.
