Chapter 29 - Fourteen Minutes

I retired at thirty-eight.
Not because I could not fight.
Because I did not want my body negotiating with younger women forever.
Twenty-eight fights.
Twenty-six wins.
Two losses.
Twenty-one knockouts.
The tattoo remained.
I added no mark for losses.
Darnell asked why.
“Because I’m done counting myself that way.”
He smiled.
On my last night at the gym, Marcus handed me the old flight boarding pass.
Seat 4A.
I had kept it inside a folder.
“You want this?”
“No.”
“Burn it?”
“No.”
I framed it in the Carter Athletic Center.
Underneath:
THE FIGHT SHE WON WITHOUT THROWING A PUNCH.
I hated the wording.
Kids loved it.
We compromised by adding another line:
May you like
AND THE BOUNDARY SHE SHOULD HAVE SET SOONER.
Better.
