Chapter 13 - The Public Video

The airline released no cabin footage publicly.
Passengers did.
One video reached forty million views.
It showed Daley’s slap.
My pause.
My smile.
Then jacket reveal.
People turned it into memes.
I hated most of them.
One clip slowed my expression and added dramatic music.
Another called me “the scariest woman alive.”
I was not.
I was a woman calculating consequences.
Then Ruth, the older passenger beside me after the assault, gave an interview.
She said:
“Everyone keeps talking about how dangerous she looked after the slap. I remember how controlled she looked before it.”
That sentence meant more.
Control.
Not fear.
Not violence.
I wrote Ruth a thank-you note.

She replied with a recipe for lemon cake.
Life is strange.
