Chapter 19 - The New Circle

Our wedding planning was the exact opposite of the nightmare two years prior.

There was no Margaret Whitmore demanding floral adjustments. There was no anxiety over appearances. We chose an intimate seaside celebration at a private estate in Newport, Rhode Island, inviting only our closest friends, family, and the people who had truly stood by us.

Rachel, my maid of honor, threw me a bridal shower where the theme was simply “Queens.” Every guest—including my mother and Julian’s wonderful, warm-hearted sisters—wore vibrant, colorful wigs in solidarity and celebration.

Two weeks before the wedding, I received a letter in my office mail.

The return address was an apartment complex in Hartford, Connecticut.

It was from Evan.

I sat at my desk and opened the envelope. Inside was a handwritten note:

*“Dear Nora,*

*I saw the announcement of your engagement in the paper. I know I have no right to write to you, and I do not expect a response. I just needed to say what I was too much of a coward to say two years ago: I am deeply, profoundly sorry.*

*I allowed my mother’s toxicity and my own greed to blind me to the rarest gift I ever had. Watching you rebuild your life, watching you become the leader you are today, has shown me what real strength looks like. You deserved a man who would stand in front of the world and defend you. I am glad you found him in Julian.*

*I wish you a lifetime of the happiness I wasn't worthy of giving you.*

*—Evan.”*

I folded the letter, placed it back in the envelope, and tucked it into the bottom drawer of my desk.

I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel triumphant. I just felt a profound, gentle closure.

May you like

I closed the drawer, locked it, and walked out into the sunshine to meet Julian for lunch.
