Chapter 18 - A Question on the Shore

In July, Julian surprised me with a weekend trip to Martha’s Vineyard.
We rented a small, weathered cedar-shingle cottage overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Menemsha. The weather was perfect—warm sea breezes, crisp blue water, and skies painted in hues of lavender and apricot at sunset.
On Saturday evening, we walked along the sandy shore, our shoes in our hands, the gentle surf lapping at our bare feet.
I wasn't wearing a wig. The warm salt air felt magnificent against my scalp, tossing the few natural wisps of my hair like feathers. I had never felt lighter, healthier, or more at peace.
Julian stopped walking near a secluded outcropping of driftwood.
The sun was sinking below the horizon, casting a path of liquid gold across the ocean.
“Nora,” Julian said, taking both of my hands in his.
I looked up at him, my heart beginning to race with sweet anticipation.
“Two years ago,” Julian said, his voice deep and filled with emotion, “you walked into my office broken by people who were supposed to cherish you. I watched you take their cruelty, turn it into fire, and use it to light the way for hundreds of other people.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
“You taught me what real courage looks like,” he continued, kneeling down on one knee in the wet sand. “And every single day I spend with you, I fall more deeply in love with your mind, your heart, and your extraordinary soul.”
He opened the box.
Inside sat a breathtaking vintage ring—a rare, brilliant cushion-cut sapphire surrounded by a delicate halo of diamonds.
“Nora Miller,” Julian said, looking into my eyes with complete devotion. “Will you do me the greatest honor of my life, and marry me?”
Tears of pure happiness spilled down my cheeks.
There were no secrets here. No trusts to fulfill. No deadlines. No conditional love.
“Yes,” I choked out, laughing through my tears. “Yes, Julian! A million times, yes!”

Julian stood up, caught me in his arms, and spun me around while the ocean waves crashed around our ankles. When he kissed me, tasting of salt and joy, I knew that every storm I had endured had been leading me right here, into the arms of a man who loved every single piece of who I was.
