Chapter 17 - The Wedding Table

They married in spring.
At the new walnut table.
Not church.
Not grand.
Whitlock served as witness.
Sheriff Hale attended.
Ranch workers.
Schoolteacher.
Beatrice.
Even Ephraim Cole’s daughter came representing her elderly father.
Lena wore Clara’s blue shawl over simple dress.
Reid wore coat he hated.
Beatrice brought no expensive gift.
She gave Lena a framed copy of Clara’s complaint.
Lena stared.
“Odd wedding present.”
“I thought silver would be worse.”
“Much.”
They laughed.
Beatrice said:
“I wanted you to have her words where no one can hide them.”
Lena hugged her.
First time.
Brief.
Real.
Marriage changed fewer things than neighbors expected.
Lena remained owner of Mercer homestead.
Reid remained minority partner Vale Stock Company.
They created joint household account.
Separate business accounts.
Warren’s mistakes had educated everyone.
Beatrice managed Vale Stock Company with Amos Webb and Reid.
She became competent.
Surprising herself most.
Profit returned after debt restructuring.
Railway station two miles away increased cattle transport revenue.
The limited water lease proved wise.
Lena’s annual income substantial.
She expanded school to three days.
Paid house staff.
No one called her servant anymore.
She sometimes missed anonymity.
People treated landowners differently.
Merchants offered credit she never requested.
Men laughed too loudly at jokes.
Some who ignored her before sought friendship.
Power changed others’ behavior.
Dangerous.
She asked Reid:
“How do I know who likes me?”
“You don't.”
“Helpful.”
“Judge actions.”
“Everyone stole that phrase.”
He smiled.
Lena visited market alone deliberately.
Still carried her own parcels sometimes.
Not to perform humility.
Because she liked choosing.
Then a letter came from Clara’s younger sister in Texas.
Lena had thought Aunt Rose dead.
She was alive.
No lost-child twist; simply estranged relative not known due years. Is this overused new relatives? User said avoid new relatives if not premise? They said don't overuse lost relatives. We can avoid. Instead maybe letter from a neighbor who knew Clara. Better.
A retired schoolteacher, Mrs. Hannah Price, wrote after newspaper title case.
She had taught Clara English.
She possessed one letter Clara wrote with help.
Lena traveled to meet her.
Reid offered.
Lena said:
“I want to go alone.”
He nodded.
Growth.
She packed repaired brown suitcase.
First time since Beatrice threw it.
Placed on bed.
Her hands stopped.
The object held shame.
Now she was choosing journey.
She smiled.
Reid noticed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
He carried suitcase downstairs.
Lena stopped him.
“I’ll carry it.”
He handed over.
No offense.
At door Beatrice happened to arrive for cattle meeting.
She saw suitcase.
Her face changed.
“You’re leaving?”
“For five days.”
“Oh.”
Lena looked at her.
Memory passed between them.
Beatrice whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
Lena picked up suitcase.
“This time I packed it.”
She left.
Mrs. Price lived near Albuquerque.
She gave Lena Clara’s letter.
Not land evidence.
A letter written before Harlan took ranch.
I hope Lena grows believing work is honorable, but never believing service means she is less than the person being served.
Lena read through tears.
Clara had no idea future.
Yet sentence reached directly.
Another:
If this land remains ours, I want Lena to know she may leave it.
Again.
Choice.
Lena returned home.
Reid waited at gate but did not dramatize.
“Good trip?”
“Yes.”
“You brought suitcase back.”
“Disappointed?”
“No.”
He kissed her.
Inside, she placed Clara’s letter beside patent.
Then closed cabinet.
Not all important things needed display.
May you like
The house no longer needed constantly prove what happened.
They knew.
