Chapter 11 - The Second BetrayalAnna could not hear anything except Carlo’s last sentence.

Vincent knew.

She looked at him.

“Tell me he’s lying.”

Vincent did not answer quickly enough.

Her face changed.

“Tell me.”

Federal agents entered the slaughterhouse.

Carlo was disarmed.

Luca raised his hands.

Dominic leaned against a pillar.

None of it mattered.

Anna stared only at Vincent.

He said quietly, “Two days after the crash, we found evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“A piece of fabric beyond the rear fence.”

Her cream maternity dress.

Anna remembered it tearing when Rebecca pulled her through the service door.

Vincent continued.

“And footprints.”

Anna’s voice trembled.

“You knew someone escaped.”

“I knew someone might have.”

“Might?”

“The investigators said the footprints could belong to emergency personnel.”

“But you considered that I survived.”

“Yes.”

“And what did you do?”

Vincent looked sick.

“I searched.”

“For how long?”

“Three months.”

Anna laughed.

It sounded broken.

“Three months.”

“I searched hospitals, clinics, private shelters.”

“Then stopped.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Carlo smiled from where agents restrained him.

“Because I gave him proof.”

Vincent turned toward his uncle with hatred.

Carlo continued.

“I produced hospital records showing an unidentified pregnant woman died the night of the crash.”

Anna stared.

“Fake records.”

“Yes.”

Vincent looked at Anna.

“I believed them.”

She stepped back.

“You believed Carlo.”

“I trusted him then.”

“More than you trusted the possibility that your wife was alive?”

“I was drowning.”

“And I was raising your premature son while hiding from men wearing your family crest.”

Vincent’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

She turned away.

Vincent caught himself before reaching for her.

That restraint mattered.

Anna noticed it despite her rage.

Helen approached.

“Anna, we need your statement.”

“I’ll give it.”

Carlo called after her.

“You should ask him one more thing.”

Vincent’s face hardened.

“Shut up.”

Anna stopped.

“What?”

Carlo smiled.

“Why did Vincent marry you?”

Silence.

Anna looked at Vincent again.

He looked confused.

Carlo continued.

“Marcus Bennett’s daughter. Antonio’s son. Two trust branches united through marriage.”

Anna stared.

Vincent shook his head.

“I didn’t know about the trust.”

“Not the trust,” Carlo said.

“The business alliance.”

Vincent’s expression shifted.

Carlo laughed.

“You remember the merger meeting?”

Vincent did.

Five years before the crash, Moretti Holdings had acquired Bennett Financial Consulting.

That meeting was where Vincent first met Anna.

Carlo had arranged it.

Anna whispered, “You introduced us.”

Carlo nodded.

“I wanted Marcus close.”

Vincent said, “That doesn’t mean our marriage was arranged.”

“No.”

Carlo’s smile became cruel.

“But I encouraged it.”

Anna felt nauseated.

“How?”

“I told Vincent that marrying Marcus Bennett’s daughter would reassure investors.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

Anna whispered, “Did he?”

Vincent looked at her.

“Yes.”

The answer cut deeply.

“You considered marrying me good for business.”

“At first.”

“At first.”

“Anna, I loved you.”

“Eventually?”

“No. Before we married.”

“But when you asked me to dinner?”

Vincent hesitated.

She understood.

“It was business.”

“The first dinner.”

Anna laughed painfully.

“Everything begins with a lie in your family.”

She walked away.

Vincent did not follow.

That was the first correct decision he made that night.

Carlo, Luca and Dominic were taken into federal custody separately.

Carlo faced charges for financial crimes, obstruction and conspiracy.

Evidence connecting him directly to Antonio’s murder remained incomplete.

Luca negotiated temporary immunity in exchange for testimony.

Dominic was treated as both witness and potential conspirator because of the staged emergency plan.

The empire began collapsing immediately.

Banks froze Moretti accounts.

Board members resigned.

Reporters surrounded every property connected to the family.

Vincent returned to his empty penthouse.

On the kitchen counter sat a photograph of Anna from before the crash.

Pregnant.

Laughing.

He turned it facedown.

Not because he wanted to forget her.

Because he finally understood that remembering the woman she had been did not entitle him to the woman she had become.

Meanwhile Anna sat beside Gabriel’s bed.

He woke.

“Mommy?”

“I’m here.”

“Were you fighting?”

She smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

“With the man from the party?”

“Partly.”

Gabriel touched her cheek.

“Is he bad?”

Anna swallowed.

“No.”

She thought carefully.

“He made bad choices.”

“Is he sorry?”

“Yes.”

Gabriel yawned.

“Then maybe he needs timeout.”

Anna laughed through tears.

“Maybe.”

The next morning Helen called.

They had found Thomas Vale’s death certificate.

Fake.

Anna stared at the phone.

“He’s alive?”

“We believe so.”

“Then everything changes.”

“Yes.”

Helen continued.

“And there’s more.”

Vale had purchased property under an alias six months earlier.

A farmhouse outside Milwaukee.

Federal agents searched it overnight.

They found surveillance photographs.

Hundreds.

Anna.

Gabriel.

Vincent.

Sophia.

Dominic.

Carlo.

Luca.

Every major person connected to the trust.

Anna felt cold.

“Was Vale there?”

“No.”

“What did you find?”

Helen hesitated.

“A wall covered with photographs and timelines.”

“That’s not surprising.”

“One section was labeled SUCCESSION.”

Anna tightened her grip on the phone.

“What was under it?”

“Gabriel.”

Anna stopped breathing.

Helen continued.

“There were copies of school applications, medical records and guardianship documents.”

Anna whispered, “Why guardianship?”

“We don’t know.”

Then Helen said the sentence that sent Anna running for the stairs.

“One document names Vincent as deceased.”

Anna froze.

“What?”

“It appears Vale’s plan isn’t just to remove you.”

Helen’s voice became urgent.

“He’s planning for Gabriel to inherit everything.”

Anna looked toward the window.

Outside, a black sedan had just stopped across the street.

A man stepped out.

Gray hair.

Scarred jaw.

Thomas Vale.

May you like

Alive.

And looking directly at Gabriel’s bedroom window.
