Chapter 15 - The CounterattackFrank Dwyer did not disappear.

He hired attorneys.

Then he went on television.

“I have never tolerated police misconduct.”

Levi watched from his office.

Dwyer sat beneath studio lights looking calm and grandfatherly.

He described MidState as a lawful private investment.

He denied bribery.

He denied destroying complaints.

Then he attacked Levi without using the word attack.

“Captain Harrison is understandably emotional after what happened to him.”

Levi’s jaw tightened.

“But commanders must separate personal trauma from institutional leadership.”

Naomi, watching beside him, muttered, “He’s good.”

“Yes.”

Dwyer continued.

“Some officers made mistakes. Those individuals should be held accountable. But turning an entire precinct into suspects is dangerous.”

The interviewer asked about Terrence.

Dwyer’s face softened.

“I tried to help that family privately for years.”

Naomi swore.

Levi said nothing.

Then Dwyer produced his weapon.

A letter.

Signed by Renee Harrison.

Naomi sat upright.

“What?”

Dwyer read one line.

Please do not let this destroy Levi’s future.

Levi stared at the screen.

The interviewer asked, “Captain Harrison’s wife asked you to protect his career?”

“She did.”

Naomi looked at her father.

“That’s not the whole letter.”

“No.”

They had the original.

Dwyer had selected one sentence.

He had turned Renee’s fear into consent.

By evening, the narrative shifted.

Was Levi using command power to avenge his brother?

Had Renee wanted the matter handled quietly?

Had the department unfairly targeted Jenkins after learning Levi’s rank?

Levi refused interviews.

Naomi did not.

She published Renee’s full letter.

Not her journals.

Only the letter relevant to Dwyer’s claim.

The missing sentences changed everything.

If you are protecting Levi by hiding this, you do not understand my husband.

Truth may damage his career, but finding out years later that everyone lied will damage him more.

Public sentiment shifted again.

But Levi was angry.

“You should’ve asked me.”

Naomi stared at him.

“It was Mom’s letter.”

“It involved me.”

“It involved her too.”

“You published something private.”

“You wanted truth.”

“Truth still has boundaries.”

Naomi stepped closer.

“You mean boundaries you control.”

“That’s not fair.”

“You keep saying that whenever I touch something you wish belonged only to you.”

Levi lowered his voice.

“I’m not trying to control you.”

“You are terrified of not controlling the story.”

That landed.

Naomi grabbed her coat.

“Frank manipulated Mom’s words publicly.”

“I know.”

“I corrected him.”

“You exposed her.”

“She’s dead, Dad.”

The moment the words left Naomi’s mouth, she regretted them.

Levi’s face changed.

Naomi’s anger collapsed.

“I’m sorry.”

He turned away.

“Go.”

“Dad—”

“Please.”

She left.

Levi stood alone.

The apartment felt suddenly too quiet.

On the table lay Renee’s journal.

Levi opened it randomly.

One sentence stared up at him.

Levi thinks protecting people means deciding what pain they are allowed to know.

He closed the journal.

His phone rang.

Carter.

“Captain, somebody searched my apartment.”

Levi’s anger disappeared.

“What was taken?”

May you like

“My computer.”

The computer containing the original backup of Levi’s body-camera evidence.
