Chapter 28 - The Choice About Carter Community

Three years after the scandal, a regional healthcare group offered to buy Carter Community Services.
The price was excellent.
Nia would become financially secure.
Denise urged her to sell.
That surprised everyone.
“I thought you’d fight,” Nia said.
“I would have once.”
“What changed?”
Denise smiled.
“I finally understand a company is not a family member.”
Nia laughed.
“Therapy again?”
“Obviously.”
The board evaluated the offer.
Employees worried.
Nia did too.
Then Simone proposed an alternative.
Employee ownership.
Gradual.
Structured.
A trust could acquire part of the company over time, giving workers an economic stake while keeping outside capital limited.
Nia loved the idea immediately.
Evelyn hated how complicated it would be.
“That means it’s probably right,” Nia said.
Evelyn glared.
After months of analysis, Nia sold thirty percent of her ownership into an employee benefit trust while retaining thirty percent personally.
Denise and Andre sold portions as part of restitution and restructuring.
Eventually no Carter held majority control.
At the closing, Nia signed documents slowly.
Marcus sat beside her.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“You’re giving up control Grandma tried to give you.”
Nia smiled.
“No.”
She signed.
“I’m using it.”
Lillian had given Nia power because she trusted her not to abuse it.
Keeping power forever was not the only way to honor that trust.
Sometimes giving it away carefully was.
When the deal was announced, employees applauded.
This time Nia allowed it.
Sheila hugged her.
“My daughter graduates next spring.”
“Nursing?”
“Yes.”
“Grandma’s scholarship?”
“Helped pay for books.”
Nia smiled through tears.
Lillian’s legacy was no longer a piece of paper hidden in a vault.
It was moving.
