Chapter 9 - Forty-Eight Million

Claire killed the transfer before it left Harrington Global.

The request required dual authorization.

Richard's credentials supplied the first.

A treasury officer, alarmed by the unusual amount, called Claire instead of approving.

“Lock treasury access,” Richard ordered.

Claire complied.

Ethan examined the request.

“This is different.”

Vanessa stood over his shoulder.

“How?”

“Last night was reconnaissance and operational disruption. This is money.”

“Forty-eight million dollars.”

“Exactly.”

Richard asked, “Can we trace the destination?”

“An intermediary account in Delaware.”

General counsel contacted the company's bank and federal investigators.

Within minutes, the account was frozen pending review.

Vanessa stared at the transfer authorization.

“Why forty-eight?”

Claire opened the Northstar model.

One line appeared under emergency liquidity assumptions.

Minimum operating reserve after asset separation: $48 million.

Everyone went quiet.

Malcolm had built that figure into Northstar.

Richard called him.

His attorney answered first.

Malcolm came onto the secure line.

“I have nothing to do with that transfer.”

Richard's voice was ice.

“Your confidential model contains the exact number.”

“So somebody read it.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to think.”

Vanessa almost reacted.

Then stopped.

Malcolm continued.

“Richard, if I wanted to move money, why would I choose the one number uniquely connected to a document you just discovered?”

Ethan nodded slowly.

Richard noticed.

“You agree with him?”

“I agree it's conspicuous.”

Malcolm laughed bitterly.

“The engineer may be the only person in your building currently using logic.”

Vanessa ignored the insult.

“Who else knew the forty-eight-million figure?”

Malcolm hesitated.

“Northstar team.”

“Names again.”

“Me. Edward. Laura. Rachel.”

“Julian?”

Silence.

Richard's face hardened.

“Malcolm.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa felt the betrayal settle deeper.

“You said the document only had comments from Julian.”

“I shared financial extracts.”

“Why?”

“Because Kestrel needed to assess feasibility.”

“So he knew.”

“Yes.”

Richard ended the call.

Vanessa walked to the window.

The city below looked indifferent.

She had grown up believing Harrington Global was almost a kingdom.

Now she understood it was a system of permissions.

One bad signature.

One filtered warning.

One misplaced friendship.

Enough pressure in the right place, and even enormous institutions could crack.

Ethan joined her.

“You should sleep.”

She glanced at him.

“You're telling me that?”

“Yes.”

“You slept at work and got fired.”

“Exactly. I have experience.”

This time she smiled.

Barely.

Then she reached into her pocket.

His badge.

“I've been carrying this.”

He looked at it.

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“Yes, you do.”

She stared at the plastic rectangle.

“Because I wanted to give it back.”

“But?”

“But handing it back doesn't erase what I did.”

“No.”

“Do you want it?”

Ethan considered.

“Not yet.”

Her eyes lifted.

“Why?”

“Because right now I don't know if I want to keep working here.”

The answer shocked her more than anger would have.

“You saved the company.”

“That doesn't mean the company is good for me.”

She almost said, We need you.

She stopped herself.

Need was not the same as respect.

“What would make you stay?”

“Don't negotiate with me while I'm exhausted.”

Again he was right.

She hated his consistency.

Across the room, Claire called out.

“Ethan.”

He returned to the terminal.

She had found the bank destination metadata.

The Delaware account belonged to Bellwether Strategic Holdings.

General counsel searched public filings.

Bellwether had been incorporated eight months earlier.

Its registered agent served thousands of companies.

No obvious owner.

But one transaction connected it to a consulting firm called Vale Risk Advisory.

Peter Vale.

The finance compliance manager who had approved the false contractor's employment verification.

Richard ordered internal security to locate him.

Peter Vale's office was empty.

His company phone sat on his desk.

His laptop was gone.

Another runner.

Vanessa said, “Rachel. Daniel Ross. Now Peter Vale.”

Claire nodded.

“Three people disappeared after the breach.”

Ethan's eyes remained on the transfer.

“Maybe only one disappeared voluntarily.”

Everyone looked at him.

He explained.

“Rachel called Vanessa. She sounded scared. Daniel Ross used a fake identity. Peter left his phone but took his laptop.”

Richard asked, “Meaning?”

“Different behavior.”

Claire understood.

“Rachel is fleeing. Daniel completed a job. Peter is taking information.”

Vanessa turned.

“Then Peter may know who is behind this.”

Richard's phone rang.

Federal cyber investigators had reached Rachel's attorney.

Vanessa blinked.

“She has an attorney?”

Apparently, Rachel had contacted one less than an hour earlier.

She was willing to surrender and cooperate.

On one condition.

She would speak first to Vanessa.

Richard immediately refused.

Vanessa immediately accepted.

They argued for three minutes.

Federal counsel finally arranged a monitored interview at a secure law office.

Before Vanessa left, Ethan stopped her.

“Don't promise anything.”

“I know.”

“Don't accuse.”

“I know.”

“Don't decide whether she's victim or villain before she talks.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Do you enjoy this?”

“A little.”

She almost laughed.

At 3:40 p.m., Vanessa entered the law office.

Rachel sat across the table looking ten years older.

Her suitcase rested beside the wall.

The Kestrel envelope lay in front of her.

Vanessa sat.

Rachel began crying.

“I thought I was helping Malcolm stop you from becoming CEO.”

Vanessa absorbed the cruelty.

“Why?”

Rachel looked ashamed.

“Because he convinced me you'd destroy the company.”

Vanessa's voice remained steady.

“What changed?”

Rachel pushed the envelope toward her.

“Last night, I learned Malcolm isn't the person trying to destroy Harrington Global.”

Vanessa opened it.

Inside was a photograph from thirty years earlier.

Richard Harrington stood beside a much younger Julian Cross.

Between them was a third man Vanessa did not recognize.

Rachel whispered his name.

“Thomas Miller.”

Vanessa froze.

“Miller?”

May you like

Rachel nodded.

“Ethan's father.”
