Chapter 9 - The Castle Trick

“Castling,” Ethan said.

Maya nodded.

“That’s a chess move.”

“I know.”

Victor looked at his son.

“What did your mother call it?”

“The castle trick because she kept forgetting the name.”

Ethan’s mouth trembled with the beginning of a smile.

“Mom was terrible at chess.”

Victor almost laughed.

“She was.”

Ethan looked toward the monitor where Simone’s frozen image remained.

“I taught her how to castle.”

Maya asked, “Could that be the password?”

Ethan thought.

“She used to say, ‘King moves two, rook moves over.’”

Renee folded her arms.

“We need something that can be translated into a password.”

Ethan looked at Victor.

“Where would Mom hide something?”

Victor knew immediately.

“The foundation archive.”

Simone had maintained a private encrypted storage account for Hale Foundation legal work.

The account had been inaccessible after her death because nobody knew the recovery phrase.

Victor had eventually stopped trying.

Two hours later, they sat in the mansion office.

Victor opened the encrypted portal.

Password prompt.

Ethan rolled closer.

“Try KING2ROOKOVER.”

Wrong.

“CASTLETRICK.”

Wrong.

Maya said, “Maybe she made it personal.”

Ethan frowned.

“What did she say when she learned?”

He closed his eyes.

Then he smiled.

“She said, ‘Even kings need help moving.’”

Victor’s throat tightened.

He typed:

EVENKINGSNEEDHELPMOVING.

Access granted.

No one spoke.

Ethan leaned back.

“Mom was dramatic.”

Victor whispered, “Very.”

Inside were twelve folders.

Vendor records.

Legal memos.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

And one folder labeled:

FOR VICTOR AND ETHAN.

Victor’s hand stopped.

“Open it,” Ethan said.

Inside were two video files.

One labeled Victor.

One labeled Ethan.

Victor could not click either.

Maya quietly moved away.

Renee did the same.

Ethan looked at his father.

“You first.”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

“Dad.”

“I can’t.”

It was the first time Ethan had ever heard Victor Hale admit inability without disguising it as strategy.

Ethan waited.

Then said, “Okay.”

He did not push.

Victor looked at him.

That mercy made it possible.

He opened the video.

Simone appeared in the family kitchen.

Alive.

Tired.

Determined.

“Victor, if you’re watching this, I probably failed to tell you myself.”

Victor’s eyes burned.

“I’m sorry I didn’t trust you sooner. Not because you were untrustworthy, but because I knew what Hale Meridian meant to you. I was afraid truth would force you to choose between your father’s legacy and your own integrity.”

Victor lowered his head.

“You always hated choices people made for you,” Simone said. “And then I made one for you.”

Victor laughed once through tears.

“Sounds familiar,” Ethan murmured.

Victor looked at him.

Even now, his son found a way to puncture self-importance.

Simone continued.

“Theodore has been stealing through vendor networks. Adrian signed some approvals. I don’t believe Adrian understood the full structure at first, but once he suspected, he became afraid.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“He may become part of the cover-up simply because shame is powerful.”

Renee wrote something down.

Simone leaned closer to the camera.

“Daniel Carter helped me trace the transactions. He is brave, but he is frightened. If anything happens to me, protect him.”

Maya covered her mouth.

“He has evidence Theodore cannot erase because copies exist outside Hale Meridian.”

Simone’s expression changed.

“And Victor, there’s something else.”

The room went quiet.

“Your father did participate in corruption when Hale Meridian was young.”

Victor closed his eyes.

“I found original ledgers.”

She looked sad.

“I know that will hurt you.”

It did.

“But your father later tried to end the arrangement. Theodore wouldn’t let him.”

Victor opened his eyes.

Simone continued.

“Harrison began documenting everything. That may be why Theodore had so much influence after his death.”

Victor whispered, “Blackmail.”

“Your father made serious mistakes,” Simone said. “He also tried to correct them. Both things can be true.”

Ethan looked at Victor.

Simone’s next sentence landed directly between them.

“Do not turn flawed people into monsters just because it hurts less than loving them honestly.”

Victor stared.

It felt as though she had reached through time and placed a hand against the hardest part of him.

Then the video ended.

Silence.

Ethan said, “Mom always talked too much.”

Victor laughed.

This time, fully.

Tears came with it.

Maya smiled.

Then Ethan looked toward his own file.

His humor disappeared.

“Play mine.”

Victor hesitated.

Ethan saw it.

“Don’t.”

Victor stopped.

“Don’t decide for me.”

Victor nodded.

Ethan opened the video.

Simone appeared again.

Her smile changed instantly.

Softer.

“My beautiful boy.”

Ethan’s face crumpled.

Victor reached toward him, then stopped himself.

Ethan noticed.

After a moment, Ethan held out his hand.

Victor took it.

On-screen, Simone said:

“If you’re watching this, somebody probably told you your life changed forever.”

Ethan swallowed.

“They’re right.”

His grip tightened around Victor’s hand.

“But changed is not ruined.”

Maya looked away, crying silently.

“You are not a lesson for other people. You are not an inspiration simply because you woke up and lived your life. You’re allowed to be angry. Funny. Difficult. Brilliant. Bored. Ambitious. Wrong.”

Ethan laughed through tears.

Simone smiled on-screen.

“And never let anyone love you by shrinking you.”

Victor bowed his head.

He knew that sentence was for him too.

The video ended.

No one moved.

Then Renee’s phone rang.

She stepped outside to answer.

When she returned, her face was grim.

“The federal contact I trust ran Daniel Carter’s Social Security activity.”

Maya stood.

“And?”

“He used his identity six months ago.”

Maya’s breath caught.

“Where?”

Renee looked at Victor.

“Michigan.”

“Where in Michigan?”

“A small town called Grayhaven.”

Victor frowned.

He knew Grayhaven.

Hale Meridian owned an abandoned shipping terminal there.

A terminal managed by Blackwell Capital.

Daniel had not disappeared randomly.

He had been hiding beside the evidence.
