Chapter 4 - The Family TrustRichard did not answer Grant.

He handed the phone to Anna.

“Take it.”

Anna stared.

“What?”

“If you think I’m lying, keep it.”

She accepted cautiously.

The message remained on screen.

FOUND HER?

A second arrived.

RICHARD. ANSWER ME.

Emily looked at her step-uncle.

“Why would Grant think you’re helping him?”

“Because until tonight, I was.”

Her face hardened.

Richard continued quickly.

“I believed Emily was dead.”

“You planned the board meeting.”

“Yes.”

“You were going to take control through the foundation.”

“For seventy-two hours.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“That’s always what people say about emergency power.”

Richard accepted the blow.

“The succession trust requires temporary consolidation if the direct beneficiary dies before Evelyn’s voting shares vest.”

“Tomorrow.”

“At nine.”

“Then what?”

“A special committee selects long-term trustees.”

“You chair that committee.”

“Yes.”

“So you win.”

“I thought I did.”

He pointed to the amendment.

“But Grant had Evelyn alter foundation administration last month.”

Emily looked closer.

Evelyn’s signature appeared at the bottom.

“Why would she do this?”

Richard answered, “She believed I was trying to steal the company.”

“Were you?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

Anna almost smiled at the honesty.

Richard continued.

“I believed your grandmother had become incapable of letting go. She’s ninety-one, Emily. She controls Hart Meridian like she expects to live forever.”

“That doesn’t explain Grant.”

“I hired him years ago to help document Evelyn’s governance failures.”

Emily stared.

“You hired my fiancé to investigate my grandmother?”

“I hired Grant before you met him.”

The room became quiet.

Emily whispered, “Before?”

“Twelve years ago.”

She and Grant began dating four years earlier.

“So meeting me…”

“I don’t know.”

“Don’t lie.”

Richard looked ashamed.

“I introduced him to several family events.”

“You placed him near me.”

“Yes.”

Emily backed away.

Every memory changed.

The charity gala where Grant first spoke to her.

The coffee afterward.

The easy understanding of family politics.

He had already studied them.

Studied her.

“Did you tell him to date me?”

“No.”

“Did you encourage it?”

Richard said nothing.

That was enough.

Emily’s eyes filled.

Anna stepped closer.

“You don’t have to process that now.”

Emily looked at her.

“I want to.”

“Want and need are different.”

Daniel heard footsteps in the hallway.

“Maya?”

Anna checked the time.

“Should be.”

She opened the door only after a coded knock arranged by phone.

Agent Maya Torres entered with two plainclothes investigators and an emergency physician from a federal-affiliated response unit.

Torres looked at Emily.

“Ms. Hart?”

“Emily Reynolds.”

Torres nodded.

“Emily Reynolds. We need to confirm your medical status and secure evidence.”

Emily pointed toward Richard.

“He’s involved.”

Richard said, “Yes.”

Torres looked mildly surprised.

“In what?”

“Attempted corporate takeover.”

“Anything related to her crash?”

“No.”

“Sedation?”

“No.”

“False death certification?”

“I didn’t know.”

Torres turned to Emily.

“Do you want him detained from the room while we speak?”

Emily looked at Richard.

“Yes.”

Torres escorted him separately.

Not arrested.

Contained.

Daniel watched Emily receive proper medical attention.

She remained conscious.

Her injuries appeared serious enough to require care but not remotely consistent with the death description.

The emergency physician said, “Someone exaggerated nearly every clinical finding.”

Daniel nodded.

“That’s what I saw.”

Torres asked him for original documents.

Daniel provided everything.

Grant’s envelope.

Death certificate.

Transfer record.

Telemetry log.

His phone recording.

Anna added her timeline.

Torres listened to Grant and Hale’s morgue conversation twice.

You said the drug would keep her under.

A legal death needs clean paperwork.

Torres looked at Daniel.

“You understand this recording changes your role.”

“How?”

“You’re not just medical examiner anymore.”

He sighed.

“Witness.”

“Yes.”

Daniel hated being part of cases.

He preferred facts after events.

Now the event was still happening.

Emily asked Torres, “What happens at nine?”

“We ask a judge to freeze any action based on your death.”

“Can you do that tonight?”

“With verified medical status and these recordings, we can try.”

“What if Grant moves first?”

“Then we preserve.”

Emily looked frustrated.

“Everyone keeps saying preserve.”

Anna smiled.

“Preservation is how you stop powerful people from rewriting yesterday.”

That sentence stayed with Emily.

Torres’s phone rang.

She listened.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She ended the call.

“St. Vincent’s records department just received a remote deletion request on Emily Hart’s emergency chart.”

Daniel looked at Hale’s name.

“From Marcus?”

“No.”

Torres turned the screen.

The authorization came from an administrative credential belonging to the Hart Meridian Family Office.

Emily whispered, “Grant.”

Torres shook her head.

“Not Grant.”

The credential belonged to Evelyn Hart.

Emily stared.

May you like

Her grandmother had just tried to delete the hospital record.

And suddenly the woman who claimed to be protecting Emily looked like the one person who had been involved from the very beginning.
