Chapter 15 - Thomas Carter's Missing Confession

Thomas Carter had recorded his final confession eleven days before he died.

Marcus learned that from his father's former hospice nurse.

Her name was Grace Mercer.

She remembered because Thomas asked everyone to leave the room before making the recording.

“He said it was for you,” Grace told Marcus.

“Did you see the device?”

“A small camera.”

“Who took it?”

Grace thought carefully.

“Mr. Shaw.”

Elliot.

Marcus felt betrayed all over again.

“Did my father tell you what was on it?”

“No.”

“Did Elliot say?”

“He told me your father changed his mind.”

Marcus didn't believe that.

Camille found the old hospice inventory.

One digital camera had been logged.

Never recovered.

Naomi sat with Marcus late that evening in his apartment.

“You need sleep.”

“You sound like Camille.”

“She's intelligent.”

Marcus stared at the city.

“If Elliot destroyed it, we'll never know what Dad said.”

Naomi sat beside him.

“You already have his written confession.”

“This one mattered enough for Elliot to hide.”

“Yes.”

Marcus rubbed his leg where muscle spasms had started.

Naomi noticed but didn't comment until he did.

“Bad day.”

She nodded.

Marcus transferred from his wheelchair to the couch.

Naomi handed him a heating pad without ceremony.

“Thank you.”

“You're welcome.”

He looked at her.

“This isn't what you signed up for.”

Naomi smiled.

“I didn't sign anything.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No.”

“Dating me.”

She leaned back.

“I am not dating your legs.”

Marcus laughed.

Then became serious.

“Sometimes I worry you met me during a crisis and we're confusing intensity with connection.”

Naomi considered that.

“Possible.”

He looked surprised.

“You're supposed to reassure me.”

“You asked for honesty.”

“I regret teaching you that.”

She smiled.

“Then let's test it.”

“How?”

“One day with no Bellmont, no Whitmore and no dead parents.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

“Can we discuss living parents?”

“Limited minutes.”

He laughed.

She kissed him.

Later, after Naomi left, Marcus received an email from an unknown address.

One attachment.

VIDEO_0714.

Marcus froze.

He called Aaron before opening it.

They viewed the file together remotely.

Thomas Carter appeared on screen.

Thin.

Pale.

Dying.

Marcus stopped breathing.

His father looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus, if you are seeing this, Elliot kept his promise.”

Marcus stared.

Aaron whispered, “Interesting.”

Thomas continued.

“I asked Elliot not to give you this unless Charles tried to take the Bellmont.”

Marcus felt confusion.

Elliot had not necessarily stolen the confession.

He had been following instructions.

“For years I told myself I was protecting our family,” Thomas said. “The truth is uglier. I was protecting my pride.”

Marcus watched his father's hands tremble.

“I approved the original reopening. Charles Whitmore exploited it. Richard Vale committed fraud. Elliot helped me hide payments made to silence lawsuits and correct defects quietly.”

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

Elliot helped.

Thomas continued.

“But Elliot later discovered Charles was using Madison Whitmore's trust entities to move money between contractors.”

Aaron paused the video.

“That explains Northstar.”

They continued.

“I ordered Elliot to maintain contact with Charles so he could learn what Whitmore planned.”

Marcus sat very still.

Elliot had been acting as an informant?

Thomas said, “If Elliot appears disloyal, consider that he may be doing exactly what I asked.”

Marcus whispered, “Oh God.”

The video continued.

“But do not trust him blindly. Fear changes men. It changed me.”

Thomas leaned closer.

“The most important evidence is not in Bellmont records. Denise Brooks discovered it. Look at the east stairwell dedication plate.”

The video ended.

Marcus immediately called Naomi.

Twenty minutes later they entered the Bellmont with Aaron and security.

The east stairwell was closed for renovation.

On the wall was a bronze dedication plate honoring the hotel's 1912 architect.

Marcus touched the edge.

Naomi noticed one screw was newer than the others.

They removed the plate.

Behind it was a narrow cavity.

Inside sat a waterproof envelope.

Naomi laughed in disbelief.

“My mother.”

Inside were photocopies of contractor ledgers and an original handwritten note from Charles Whitmore.

Richard—

Move the excess through Meridian. Carter doesn't need to see final labor totals. Once the option matures, none of this matters.

C.W.

Aaron stared.

“This is excellent evidence.”

Marcus barely heard him.

Another item lay inside.

A photograph.

Denise Brooks and Thomas Carter standing together on the Bellmont roof.

Written on the back:

We finally agreed to stop being cowards.

D.B. + T.C.

Dated nine years earlier.

Marcus looked at Naomi.

Their parents had met again.

Had apparently decided to expose everything.

Yet neither succeeded.

Naomi turned over the envelope.

A final message was written there.

If anything happens before we release this, ask Elliot why Charles knew our meeting location.

Marcus felt the temperature drop.

Thomas had warned them about Elliot.

Not because Elliot was definitely a traitor.

Because someone had leaked information.

And only three people had known where Thomas and Denise planned to meet.

Thomas.

May you like

Denise.

And Elliot Shaw.
