Chapter 12 - Managed Delicately

Daniel called before Rachel could decide whether to call him first.

“Where are you?” he asked.

His voice was calm. Too calm.

“At work.”

“No, you’re not.”

Rachel looked at the wall clock in her apartment. She had come home an hour earlier after Ethan insisted she stop using office systems for anything connected to Halcyon.

“What do you want?”

“You ignored six texts.”

“Maybe I was busy discovering my fiancé knew my father helped destroy my ex.”

Silence.

Then: “That’s dramatic even for you.”

Rachel laughed bitterly. “You were at that dinner.”

“So?”

“So you knew.”

“I knew your father had industry contacts.”

“Don’t insult me.”

Daniel exhaled. “Rachel, this is exactly why I didn’t tell you more. You personalize everything.”

“No,” she said, voice shaking with anger. “You depersonalize everything. Even theft.”

He went quiet.

Then he said something that changed the shape of the conversation.

“You think Marcus is the only person who got hurt ten years ago?”

Rachel stopped.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Whitmore used a lot of people. Including me.”

She almost answered, Then why are you still with them? But he continued.

“I was junior. I did what I was told. I learned how the world actually works.”

“And decided to become it?”

“You decided to wear moral outrage because it flatters you.” His tone sharpened. “Where was that outrage when your father was paying your rent after you left Boston?”

Rachel went cold.

“You knew that?”

“Of course I knew. Victor tells stories when he drinks.”

She closed her eyes.

There it was. Another layer of humiliation. Another way men had passed pieces of her life between themselves like small confidential jokes.

“What do you want?” she asked.

“I want you to stop talking to Marcus Carter and his lawyers.”

“No.”

“Rachel—”

“No.”

When she hung up, her body was trembling.

Two hours later she met Sophie in a small downtown café and told her almost everything except the legal details Ethan had asked her to protect.

Sophie listened, horrified.

“So Daniel basically courted you while knowing your father had buried Marcus?”

Rachel nodded. “Or at least knowing enough not to tell me.”

Sophie stirred her coffee. “And Marcus?”

Rachel looked down.

“Marcus looked me in the eye ten years ago and asked if I sent anything to my father.”

Sophie’s face softened painfully. “And you lied.”

“Yes.”

“Do you still love him?”

Rachel laughed weakly. “I don’t know if love is the word people deserve after this much damage.”

Sophie considered that.

“Maybe not. But it might still be the feeling.”

Rachel didn’t answer.

That night, Ethan sent over the Bellgrave’s security footage. The hotel legal department had quietly released it after Ethan’s request and before Daniel could block it.

Rachel watched herself on the screen.

Her face was worse than she remembered. Not cartoonishly cruel. Believably dismissive. The kind of contempt polished enough to pass for wit.

Then she watched Marcus.

Calm. Controlled. Slightly sad.

The car arrived.

The valet handed him the key.

Your other car is ready at the private entrance.

Rachel shut the laptop and pressed her palms into her eyes.

She had been humiliatingly wrong about his money.

But money was the least of it.

The next morning, Nora called her.

“Marcus wants to know if you’re willing to make a statement.”

Rachel sat up. “To who?”

“Halcyon’s independent directors. Privately.”

Rachel stared out the window.

“If I do that, Daniel will know.”

“Yes.”

“And my father?”

“Yes.”

Nora’s voice remained even. “No one is asking you because it will be comfortable.”

Rachel laughed, once. “Tell Marcus I’ll do it.”

There was a pause on the line.

Then Nora said something that sounded like respect, though Rachel wasn’t sure she deserved it yet.

“Good.”

After the call, Rachel opened her closet and looked at a row of expensive dresses, tailored jackets, silent evidence of the life Victor always said she’d need.

For the first time, they all looked like uniforms.

May you like

And somewhere across the city, Daniel was probably building a new version of the story.

This time, Rachel thought, he would have to build it without her cooperation.
