Chapter 1 - The Kiss

Nathaniel Carter knew the sound of his bedroom door better than he knew most voices now.

Since the accident, he had learned to measure life through smaller things.

The soft hydraulic hum of his adjustable bed.

The whisper of Claire Bennett’s shoes across the mahogany floor.

The faint mechanical click when his eye-tracking tablet awakened.

The difference between Victoria’s footsteps when she was angry and when she was pretending not to be.

Tonight, her footsteps were slow.

Deliberate.

Nathaniel turned his head as much as his neck allowed.

Victoria stepped into the bedroom wearing an emerald-green dress he had never seen before.

She was holding another man’s hand.

Malcolm Reed.

Nathaniel recognized him instantly.

Not because they were friends.

Because Malcolm had appeared three times during the past six months on expense reports from Carter Meridian Group, attached to a consulting company Nathaniel did not remember hiring.

Victoria stopped beneath the gold-framed wedding portrait above the marital bed.

In that photograph, Nathaniel stood behind her with both arms around her waist.

He remembered the photographer telling them to laugh.

Victoria had whispered something obscene in his ear.

He had laughed so hard the photograph became her favorite.

Now the same woman looked directly at him.

Then she turned toward Malcolm.

And kissed him.

Not a frightened mistake.

Not an impulsive touch.

A deliberate, lingering kiss.

Nathaniel’s chest tightened.

His hands did nothing.

His legs did nothing.

The paralysis had taken that choice from him eighteen months earlier.

But it had not taken sensation from every part of his body.

And it had certainly not taken humiliation.

“Victoria...?”

His voice came out weaker than he intended.

She separated from Malcolm.

For half a second, Nathaniel saw something in her eyes.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

Then she smiled.

“What are you going to do?” she asked softly. “You can’t move.”

Malcolm’s hand settled around her waist.

Nathaniel stared at them.

Then at the wedding portrait.

His eyes burned.

One tear slid slowly toward his ear.

Malcolm stepped closer to the medical bed.

“She’s with me now.”

Nathaniel looked back at him.

“In our bedroom?”

Malcolm’s smirk faltered.

Perhaps he had expected shouting.

Perhaps rage would have been easier.

Victoria folded her arms.

“This stopped being our bedroom a long time ago.”

Nathaniel breathed carefully.

The tablet mounted to his right glowed.

Victoria had forgotten about it.

Or perhaps she had stopped understanding what it meant.

Two months earlier, Claire had restored Nathaniel’s independent access to the system after discovering that several accessibility permissions had mysteriously been disabled.

Nathaniel focused his eyes on the screen.

A blue square illuminated.

RECORDING ACTIVE.

He had activated it the moment Victoria walked through the door holding Malcolm’s hand.

Neither of them noticed.

Victoria stepped closer.

“You should have accepted reality months ago, Nate.”

“You mean my disability?”

“I mean everything.”

Malcolm looked uncomfortable now.

“Victoria.”

She ignored him.

“You built your entire life around control. The company. The house. Me. Then suddenly your body stopped obeying you.”

Nathaniel’s jaw tightened.

“And you decided that made me property?”

Her face hardened.

Before she could answer, footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Claire appeared in the open doorway.

She froze.

Her gaze moved from Victoria to Malcolm, then to Nathaniel’s face.

Then she noticed the tablet.

The saved file appeared.

BEDROOM RECORDING SAVED — 10:47 PM.

Claire walked to Nathaniel’s side.

“Nathaniel,” she said quietly, “the recording is saved.”

Victoria’s confidence vanished.

She moved toward the tablet.

“Turn that off.”

Claire immediately positioned herself between Victoria and the medical equipment.

“Please don’t touch his accessibility devices.”

“This is my house.”

Nathaniel’s eyes shifted toward Victoria.

“No.”

One word.

Victoria stopped.

Nathaniel looked toward the command menu.

Claire understood.

“Do you want me to open communications?”

He blinked once.

Yes.

The menu appeared.

Victoria stared at him.

“What are you doing?”

Nathaniel selected the name he had secretly restored three days earlier.

ELENA BROOKS — COUNSEL.

Victoria went pale.

Not because of the kiss.

Nathaniel saw it.

And suddenly his heartbreak changed shape.

“Send it,” he said.

Claire confirmed the command.

The file uploaded.

Malcolm released Victoria’s waist.

Victoria looked at the tablet.

Then at Malcolm.

Nathaniel watched the glance between them.

Too quick.

Too frightened.

Far too frightened for two people who had merely been caught having an affair.

Nathaniel’s pulse quickened.

He looked again at the screen.

The recording had captured more than the kiss.

During the first seconds, before Victoria crossed the doorway, Malcolm’s voice had been audible from the hall.

Nathaniel replayed the waveform through his headset.

One sentence emerged beneath the sound of footsteps.

“After Friday, once the incapacity papers clear, he won’t control anything.”

Nathaniel stopped breathing for a second.

Victoria saw the recognition in his face.

“Nate—”

He looked directly at her.

The tear remained on his cheek.

But the grief in his eyes was changing.

“What happens Friday?”

Nobody answered.

Above them, the wedding portrait seemed suddenly less like a memory.

More like evidence.

And for the first time since his accident, Nathaniel understood something terrifying.

May you like

Victoria had not brought Malcolm into the bedroom because she believed their marriage was over.

She had brought him there because she believed Nathaniel Carter already was.
