Chapter 3 - Lily’s MoneyVanessa did not want to discuss the trust in front of the children.

Daniel refused to continue the argument at all.

“Tomorrow,” he said.

“Privately.”

Vanessa agreed.

But Lily had already heard enough.

“My trust?”

Vanessa’s expression softened.

“It’s money your grandfather left for you.”

“How much?”

“That isn’t important tonight.”

Lily stared.

“If someone keeps saying Friday and Friday is about my money, it feels important.”

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

She closed her eyes briefly.

“About one point seven million dollars.”

Noah looked up.

Lily’s mouth opened.

“I have what?”

“You don’t have access to it,” Vanessa said quickly. “It’s held in trust for education, housing, and your future.”

Daniel stood motionless.

“You never told me the amount.”

“You never asked.”

“I knew Charles left something for Lily. You made it sound like a college account.”

“It mostly is.”

“One-point-seven million dollars is not a college account.”

Vanessa bristled.

“It isn’t yours.”

“I didn’t say it was.”

“You’re acting like I hid your money.”

“You hid something affecting our family.”

Vanessa looked at Noah.

“So did your son.”

Noah flinched.

Daniel stopped.

This was exactly what the anonymous sender seemed to want.

Every secret became ammunition.

He lowered his voice.

“Enough.”

Vanessa nodded reluctantly.

Daniel turned toward Lily.

“You are not responsible for any argument about that money.”

Lily looked overwhelmed.

“I didn’t even know.”

“That is on the adults.”

Vanessa said:

“Your grandfather created the Hale Family Trust before he died. My brother Mark and I manage it until you’re older.”

Daniel looked sharply at her.

“Mark manages it?”

“He’s a financial adviser.”

“I know what he does.”

“Then why are you acting surprised?”

“Because you told me he helped with paperwork. Not that he controls nearly two million dollars for Lily.”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“He doesn’t control it. We are co-trustees.”

“And Friday?”

“A review.”

“With whom?”

“Mark.”

Daniel laughed once.

“The trustee reviews himself?”

“He handles the investments.”

“That is not independent review.”

Vanessa’s tone hardened.

“My father trusted him.”

“And what do you trust?”

Vanessa stared at him.

The question landed harder than he intended.

Lily stood.

“I want to go upstairs.”

Vanessa immediately rose.

“I’ll come.”

Lily looked toward Noah.

He was still standing alone.

“I don’t think Noah did it.”

Everyone turned.

Lily swallowed.

“I’m still uncomfortable.”

Noah nodded slowly.

“That’s fair.”

“But the picture from outside…”

She looked at him.

“You couldn’t have taken that.”

“No.”

“I know.”

It was not reconciliation.

It was accuracy.

Daniel appreciated it.

Vanessa took Lily upstairs.

Daniel remained with Noah.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then Daniel said:

“The sneakers.”

“I know.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“Eight hundred dollars?”

“Eight hundred forty-three.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Fantastic.”

“I’m sorry.”

“We’ll deal with it later.”

Noah looked surprised.

“You’re not mad?”

“I’m extremely mad.”

“Oh.”

“But being mad about one thing doesn’t make you guilty of everything.”

Noah’s eyes lowered.

Daniel sat beside him.

“Why didn’t you tell me about the messages?”

“You’d just started trusting me again.”

“I’m your father.”

“That doesn’t mean I wanted another disappointment speech.”

Daniel flinched.

“Is that what I do?”

“Sometimes.”

“Okay.”

Daniel let that sit.

Noah continued.

“The sender knew about the shoes. They also knew Lily had the trust.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

Noah opened an older message.

Rich girl. Poor judgment. Imagine what happens when everyone learns what Lily is worth.

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“Did you know about the trust?”

“No.”

“Did you ask anyone?”

“No.”

“So whoever sent this knew before tonight.”

Noah nodded.

Daniel took a screenshot.

Upstairs, Vanessa helped Lily settle into bed.

Lily stopped her at the door.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“Why didn’t you tell Daniel?”

“About the trust?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa sat.

“Because it came from my father.”

“That doesn’t answer.”

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“You’re becoming difficult.”

“Daniel says that means I’m thinking.”

Vanessa almost laughed.

Then became serious.

“When I married Daniel, we agreed to keep certain pre-marriage assets separate. His company interests. Your trust. Noah’s education fund.”

“Why?”

“To protect both families.”

“From each other?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“In a way.”

Lily looked down.

“Does Mark know I didn’t know?”

“Yes.”

“Does he know about Friday?”

“He scheduled it.”

“What are you reviewing?”

“Investments.”

Lily felt unease again.

“Is something wrong?”

“No.”

Vanessa answered too quickly.

Lily noticed.

“Mom.”

Vanessa touched her hair.

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

That sentence had never sounded more suspicious.

After Vanessa left, Lily checked her phone.

A new message request waited from an unknown social-media account.

No profile picture.

No followers.

Only one message.

Noah isn’t the only person lying to you. Ask your mother where $487,000 went.

Lily stared at the number.

Then at the closed bedroom door.

She almost called Vanessa.

Instead she took a screenshot.

The message vanished seconds later.

But Lily still had the image.

Downstairs, Daniel and Noah were reviewing timestamps.

Upstairs, Vanessa believed her daughter was sleeping.

Outside, the street was empty.

And somewhere between the family’s secrets and Lily’s money, Friday was becoming more dangerous by the minute.
