Chapter 26 - The Second CakeThe morning of Ashley’s wedding was bright.

Simone’s team loaded the cake into the refrigerated van.
Keisha drove.
Simone sat beside her.
“You can still make me do this,” Keisha said.
“No.”
“I am available.”
“I know.”
“You are choosing unnecessary emotional labor.”
Simone laughed.
“Drive.”
They reached the venue in late afternoon.
Same side entrance.
Same service corridor.
Renee met them.
She looked between Simone and the doors.
“You good?”
“Yes.”
“Need a minute?”
“No.”
Renee smiled.
“Okay.”
They unloaded the cake.
Three tiers.
Soft ivory.
Subtle geometric texture inspired by Malcolm’s architectural sketches.
Blackberry-colored sugar accents.
Elegant.
Different.
Simone wrapped both hands around the cart.
For a second, memory overlaid reality.
White orchids.
Gold.
Marcus.
Then Renee said:
“Right through here.”
Simone smiled.
“Perfect.”
They pushed the doors open.
The ceremony hall was still being prepared.
No guests yet.
Malcolm stood near the altar speaking with the officiant.
He turned.
Saw Simone.
Waved.
“Cake genius!”
Simone laughed.
No panic.
No hidden recognition.
Just a groom who knew exactly who she was.
Ashley entered from the opposite hallway in a rehearsal robe.
“You’re early.”
“I believe in not surprising brides.”
Ashley grinned.
“Excellent policy.”
Simone positioned the cake in the reception area.
Renee checked the table.
Everything remained intact.
Ashley approached when the staff stepped away.
For a moment they stood beside the cake.
“I thought this would feel stranger,” Ashley said.
“Me too.”
“You know what I keep remembering?”
“What?”
“You apologizing in the bridal suite.”
Simone winced.
“I hated that.”
“Why?”
“You were standing in a wedding dress and I apologized for existing.”
Ashley nodded.
“I hated it too.”
Simone looked at the cake.
“Neither of us knew how much bigger it was.”
“No.”
Ashley touched the edge of the table.
“Thank you for doing this.”
“You paid the invoice.”
“That is aggressively Simone.”
“Receipts matter.”
Ashley laughed.
Then Renee called her away.
Before leaving, Ashley turned.
“You staying for the ceremony?”
Simone hesitated.
She had planned to leave.
“No.”
Ashley nodded.
“No pressure.”
There it was again.
Choice.
Simone looked toward the floral arch.
Different flowers.
Different groom.
Different woman too, in ways no one could see.
“You know what?”
Ashley waited.
“I’ll stay.”
Ashley smiled.
Simone stood near the back with Keisha as guests arrived.
Evelyn spotted her and waved.
No whispers.
No viral tension.
When Malcolm walked to the altar, Simone watched.
Her heart remained steady.
Then Ashley appeared.
Not walking toward a trap.
Walking toward a man who had answered questions before vows rather than after discovery.
Simone cried.
Keisha handed her a tissue.
“Don’t ruin your makeup.”
“I’m wearing catering makeup.”
“Still.”
Ashley reached the altar.
Malcolm took her hand.
The officiant began.
Simone listened.
Consent.
Promises.
Choice.
Simple words made powerful because everybody hearing them knew the truth.
When the officiant asked Ashley if she took Malcolm to be her husband, Ashley said:
“I do.”
Nothing collapsed.
Nobody entered through a side door.
No phone appeared.
No second life surfaced.
The ordinary success of the moment felt extraordinary.
At the reception, Simone watched them cut the cake.
Ashley took one bite and pointed across the room.
Simone mouthed, “Good?”
Ashley gave two thumbs up.
Simone laughed.
Then she and Keisha left.
Outside, the sky had turned gold.
Keisha linked arms with her.
“How do you feel?”
Simone thought.
“Hungry.”
Keisha stared.
“That’s it?”
“No.”
Simone smiled.
“But it’s enough for tonight.”
May you like
Behind them, music began.
The cake had reached the reception.
