Chapter 9 - The Man Behind Peter

The gunfire stopped after less than a minute.
Police moved through the cottage.
Peter was gone.
Again.
Michael survived.
We moved him to a secure hospital under police protection.
There, he finally told us everything.
Peter wasn't the mastermind.
He was the accountant.
The organizer.
The man who moved money and forged documents.
But someone above him had designed the entire operation.
“Who?” I asked.
Michael looked at Jonathan.
Jonathan closed his eyes.
“Say it.”
Michael whispered,
“Evelyn Carter.”
I frowned.
“Who?”
Jonathan looked at me.
“My mother.”
I stared.
“She died twenty years ago.”
“No.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“She disappeared.”
I looked at Michael.
“She is alive?”
“Yes.”
The woman who had created the Carter family trust had never died.
She had simply disappeared after a financial scandal.
Rachel had discovered it.
“She came back,” Michael said.
“When?”
“About five years ago.”
“Why?”
“To take control of the company.”
I thought about everything.
The trust.
The money.
The shell companies.
Rachel's death.
Ethan.
“Why Ethan?”
“Because he was the final beneficiary.”
“And me?”
“You were the obstacle.”
Michael explained that Evelyn had created a network of people inside the family business.
Peter.
Grant.
Melissa.
Several executives.
Even hospital contacts.
They had spent years preparing to control the trust.
Rachel discovered them.
So they tried to discredit her.
When that failed, they planned to remove her.
I looked at Jonathan.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“You let her die.”
“I tried to save her.”
“You failed.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
I wanted to hate him.
But he looked broken.
Michael continued.
“Rachel recorded everything.”
“Where?”
“She hid it.”
“Where?”
Michael looked at me.
“With you.”
I thought of the house.
The basement.
The floor.
The boxes.
“That's why they wanted me to sell the house.”
“Yes.”
“What is hidden here?”
“The original ledger.”
“That's what Peter was looking for.”
“Yes.”
We returned home under police protection.
The house was searched from top to bottom.
Nothing.
Then Ethan walked into the kitchen.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Why are all these people here?”
I smiled.
“Just making sure we're safe.”
He looked at the floor.
“Is that where Uncle Grant fell?”
“Yes.”
Ethan pointed.
“There's something there.”
I crouched.
“What?”
He pointed at the baseboard.
A tiny scratch.
I pulled it away.
Behind it was a narrow cavity.
Inside was a memory card.
Rachel's final evidence.
We played it.
Rachel appeared.
Her face was pale.
But her voice was steady.
“David, if you're watching this, I need you to know I never betrayed you.”
My eyes burned.
“I loved you.”
She paused.
“And I loved Ethan.”
Then she revealed everything.
Evelyn had demanded control of the trust.
Rachel refused.
Peter had forged documents.
Melissa had monitored me.
Grant had moved money.
And someone had attempted to poison Rachel in the hospital.
But Rachel had survived the first attempt.
She was supposed to leave.
Then Peter arrived.
The video ended.
A second file began.
Security footage.
Hospital corridor.
Peter entering Rachel's room.
Melissa following him.
Then another person.
A woman.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
Evelyn.
I stared at the screen.
She walked into Rachel's room.
Twenty minutes later, she walked out.
Rachel never walked out.
Detective Cole stared.
“We have enough.”
“No,” I said.
“What?”
“We need her.”
Michael shook his head.
“You'll never find her.”
I looked at the footage.
The woman wore a distinctive ring.
A large emerald.
I recognized it.
Melissa had one.
But Evelyn's was older.
Family heirloom.
Then I remembered the photograph from Rachel's hospital room.
Melissa wasn't the woman holding the syringe.
She had been standing beside the bed.
The person holding the syringe had been partially hidden.
I zoomed in.
The ring appeared.
Evelyn.
We traced it to a private club.
She had used an alias.
But security footage placed her there three days earlier.
We went immediately.
She was gone.
But someone had left a message.
A handwritten card.
You finally found me.
I turned it over.
Now find the room Rachel died in.
I looked at Cole.
“What does that mean?”
He didn't know.
Michael did.
“The hospital.”
We returned to the old hospital wing.
The room had been closed for renovations.
Inside the wall, beneath a loose panel, we found a recording device.
Rachel's voice came through.
“If you're hearing this, then they failed.”
I closed my eyes.
“I knew they would come after Ethan.”
Then Rachel said something I had never expected.
“David, there is one thing I lied to you about.”
The recording paused.
Then:
“Ethan was not born in that hospital.”
I stared at the speaker.
“What?”
Michael looked at me.
Rachel continued.
“He was born somewhere else.”
My heart pounded.
“And the person who helped me give birth to him is the one person Evelyn cannot control.”
The recording ended.
A final name appeared on the screen.
DR. SAMUEL WHITMORE.
I looked at the doctor.
May you like
He was standing behind us.
And he was crying.
