Chapter 28 - Linda’s Christmas Table

Five years after slap, Linda invited everyone to Christmas Eve.

Sarah almost said no.

Then asked details.

Linda’s condo.

Eight people.

No extended cousins.

No paperwork.

Linda added:

“I promise no soup.”

Sarah laughed despite herself.

They went.

Not because tradition demanded.

Because Sarah wanted to see whether room could be different.

Linda’s table was smaller.

Tree six feet.

Candles.

Pie already on sideboard.

Sarah brought her homemade pie too.

Old pattern.

Linda saw.

For one second tension.

Then Linda moved purchased dessert aside.

“Put yours here.”

Sarah did.

Dinner began.

Linda toasted.

Sarah’s body tensed automatically.

Linda noticed.

Her face softened.

“To Emma.”

Emma smiled.

“For what?”

“For being the only person here who still tells us when food is bad.”

Everyone laughed.

Safe.

Linda continued:

“And to people who came because they chose to.”

That was all.

No ownership.

Halfway through, conversation turned to business.

Linda stopped herself.

“No. Not tonight.”

Daniel smiled.

Allison looked impressed.

After dinner Linda asked Sarah privately:

“Do you remember everything?”

“Yes.”

“Every Christmas?”

“Sometimes.”

Linda nodded.

“I do too.”

Sarah waited.

“I used to wish everyone would forget.”

“And now?”

“I think forgetting would let me become person I was.”

Sarah understood.

Memory as guardrail.

Not punishment.

Linda said:

“Thank you for coming.”

“Thank you for making it possible.”

No hug.

Then Linda surprised.

“Would you like house recipe book?”

Sarah frowned.

“You kept?”

“From Lake Forest kitchen.”

Old family recipes.

Charles’s notes.

Daniel childhood favorites.

Not asset control.

Ordinary inheritance.

Sarah accepted.

At home Emma flipped pages.

Found apple-cranberry pie recipe.

Linda’s handwriting in margin:

Sarah’s version is better. Use less sugar.

Sarah laughed.

Daniel stared.

“Mom wrote that?”

“Yes.”

“Historic.”

They framed nothing.
