Chapter 3 - The School Meeting

At nine the next morning, the Hall family sat in a conference room designed to make conflict look civilized.

Beige walls.

Round table.

Pitcher of water.

Framed posters about integrity and academic excellence.

Jaylen sat between his parents.

Derrick wore the same expression he wore during difficult contract negotiations.

Monique looked as if she had not slept.

Across from them sat Assistant Principal Karen Miles, school counselor Mr. Bryant, and Ms. Cooper.

Jaylen’s English teacher was younger than Derrick expected, perhaps thirty-five. She wore glasses and a dark green cardigan.

Nobody spoke until Ms. Miles folded her hands.

“Thank you for coming.”

Derrick nodded.

Monique said nothing.

“We need to address two separate issues,” Ms. Miles continued. “Jaylen’s conduct yesterday and an academic-integrity concern.”

Jaylen shifted.

Derrick noticed.

Ms. Cooper spoke.

“Yesterday I confiscated Jaylen’s phone because he was using it during a quiz.”

“I was checking the time,” Jaylen said.

Ms. Cooper looked at him.

“You were messaging.”

Jaylen looked away.

She continued.

“When I asked you to hand me the phone, you said I was targeting you. I told you we could discuss it privately after class.”

“You embarrassed me.”

Ms. Cooper’s expression tightened.

“I did make one comment I regret.”

Everyone looked at her.

She took a breath.

“I told Jaylen that if he spent as much time completing assignments as he did arguing, he would not need extensions.”

Monique’s posture changed.

“In front of the class?”

“Yes.”

“That was inappropriate.”

“It was,” Ms. Cooper said. “And I intend to apologize to him for it.”

Jaylen looked surprised.

Derrick was silent.

Ms. Cooper turned toward Jaylen.

“My frustration did not give me the right to embarrass you.”

Jaylen stared at the table.

“But your embarrassment did not give you the right to call me stupid, refuse to leave, or tell the class that you already knew every answer on Friday’s assessment.”

Jaylen’s head lifted.

“I was joking.”

Ms. Miles opened a folder.

“That is what we need to determine.”

She placed printed screenshots on the table.

Group messages.

Derrick recognized Jaylen’s contact photo.

One message read:

Friday easy. Cooper uses same answer sheet. I got it.

Another:

$20 and I send pics. Don’t be cheap.

Monique covered her mouth.

Derrick did not move.

Jaylen said quickly, “Those don’t prove anything.”

“Are they your messages?” Ms. Miles asked.

Jaylen remained silent.

“Jaylen.”

“Yes.”

“Did you possess photographs of Ms. Cooper’s answer key?”

“No.”

“Then what were you selling?”

“I wasn’t selling anything.”

Derrick pointed at the page.

“You literally wrote twenty dollars.”

“That was a joke.”

“To six people?”

Jaylen said nothing.

Ms. Miles continued.

“The school has not found evidence that Jaylen accessed any system illegally. We want to be clear about that.”

Derrick nodded.

“But two students say Jaylen showed them a photograph of a printed answer key last week.”

Monique looked at her son.

“Is that true?”

“No.”

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly.

Ms. Cooper placed another page on the table.

“The answer key was kept in a blue binder in my classroom.”

Jaylen’s face changed.

Barely.

But Derrick saw it.

“You saw it,” he said.

Jaylen looked at him.

“No.”

Ms. Cooper continued.

“Jaylen stayed after class last Tuesday to discuss a missing essay. I stepped into the hallway for approximately two minutes.”

Monique whispered, “Jaylen.”

“I didn’t take anything.”

Ms. Miles slid the screenshots back into the folder.

“We are investigating. Until that is complete, Jaylen remains suspended for the original conduct violation.”

Derrick asked, “What happens if you prove he had it?”

“Academic consequences depend on whether the material was merely photographed, distributed, or used. We do not expel students automatically for something like this. But there could be academic probation, loss of extracurricular privileges, zero credit, and additional suspension.”

Jaylen stared down.

Basketball.

That was the first consequence that frightened him.

Derrick saw it.

Ms. Miles turned to Monique.

“There is another matter.”

Monique’s shoulders stiffened.

“Our records show that in October you asked school staff to direct behavioral communication primarily to you.”

Derrick slowly looked at his wife.

“What?”

Monique closed her eyes.

Ms. Miles seemed uncomfortable.

“You indicated there was disagreement at home regarding disciplinary approaches.”

Derrick’s voice remained calm.

“So she asked you not to contact me?”

“Not exactly,” Ms. Miles said. “Your email remained on the account. But Mrs. Hall asked teachers to contact her first.”

Derrick turned fully toward Monique.

“You did that?”

“I was trying to stop every issue from becoming a war.”

“You removed me.”

“I did not remove you.”

“You made yourself the filter.”

Jaylen watched them.

Ms. Miles raised a hand.

“This conversation may be more productive at home.”

Renee’s words echoed in Derrick’s mind.

The punishment is a negotiation.

Except it was worse.

The information itself had become negotiable.

The meeting ended with Jaylen ordered to complete five days at home, submit missing assignments, and return Monday for an integrity conference.

In the parking lot Derrick unlocked the SUV.

Jaylen reached for the rear door.

“Wait,” Derrick said.

Jaylen froze.

Derrick looked at him.

“Did you photograph that answer key?”

“No.”

“Look at me.”

Jaylen did.

“No.”

Derrick studied his face.

Then Jaylen added:

“Ask Mom.”

Monique’s head snapped toward him.

Derrick frowned.

“Why would I ask your mother?”

Jaylen’s eyes immediately filled with regret.

Monique stepped forward.

“Jaylen.”

But Derrick was already looking at her.

“What does he mean?”

Jaylen opened the SUV door.

Monique grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t.”

He pulled away.

“You wanted me to lie.”

Monique went completely still.

Derrick felt something cold move through his chest.

“Lie about what?”

Jaylen looked between them.

May you like

Then said the sentence that cracked the family open:

“About the tutor.”
