Chapter 1 - The Selfie

Malik Johnson had practiced the sentence all afternoon.

Not because it was difficult.

Because Christopher Hale was his favorite actor.

“Mr. Hale, can we take a selfie?”

Malik whispered it again while standing behind the polished silver crowd barrier outside Hollywood’s Monarch Theatre. Camera flashes burst across the red carpet like tiny lightning strikes. Behind him, giant posters advertised Kingdom of Ash, Christopher Hale’s newest film and the biggest production Meridian Pictures had released in years.

Nia Johnson smiled at her son.

“You’re going to wear that sentence out before he gets here.”

Malik grinned.

“I don’t want to mess it up.”

“You’re asking for a picture, baby. You’re not delivering the State of the Union.”

He laughed.

Nia had spent more than she should have on Malik’s navy blazer because tonight mattered to him. He had followed Christopher’s movies since he was six. He knew interviews, character names, behind-the-scenes trivia.

For Malik, Christopher represented courage.

Heroes survived impossible things in Christopher Hale movies.

At 7:43 p.m., the crowd erupted.

Christopher stepped onto the carpet in a midnight-black tuxedo, blond hair perfectly arranged beneath the premiere lights.

He smiled with practiced ease.

“Christopher!”

“Over here!”

“Mr. Hale!”

Christopher signed posters.

He posed beside a middle-aged white couple.

He laughed with two college students.

A teenage girl asked for a photo.

“Absolutely,” Christopher said warmly.

Malik bounced on the balls of his feet.

Nia touched his shoulder.

“Stay behind the barrier.”

“I know.”

Christopher moved closer.

Malik lifted his phone with both hands.

Their eyes met.

Malik smiled.

“Mr. Hale! Can we take a selfie?”

Something changed.

Not dramatically.

That was what Nia remembered later.

Christopher’s smile simply disappeared.

His gaze traveled from Malik’s face to his blazer and back again.

His jaw tightened.

“Back off.”

Malik blinked.

Christopher stepped toward him.

“Get away from me.”

His hand struck Malik’s upper arm in one abrupt dismissive motion.

Malik stumbled backward.

Only one step.

But the sound Nia made came from someplace deeper than thought.

“HEY!”

She caught Malik by the shoulder before he could collide with another guest.

“He’s a child!” Nia shouted. “Don’t touch him!”

The crowd nearest them went silent.

Christopher looked irritated rather than frightened.

“He came at me.”

“No, he asked you for a picture.”

“I said back off.”

“You put your hands on my son.”

Malik stared at the carpet.

His phone trembled in his fingers.

“Mom,” he whispered.

That one word changed Nia’s anger.

She turned toward him.

“You okay?”

He nodded too quickly.

His eyes were wet.

A woman in a cream blazer stepped forward from three feet away.

“I got it.”

Nia looked at her.

The woman held up her phone.

“I recorded the whole thing.”

Christopher’s expression shifted.

“What?”

“My name is Emily,” she said. “I was recording the carpet. I got everything.”

A security employee approached.

Christopher immediately straightened his jacket.

“Handle this.”

Nia stared at him.

“Handle what? Your behavior?”

Christopher walked away.

Not hurriedly.

Confidently.

As though people like him always had somewhere safer to stand.

Malik’s breathing became uneven.

Nia wrapped both arms around him.

“You did nothing wrong.”

“I shouldn’t have asked.”

Her heart cracked.

“No. Don’t say that.”

Across the carpet, Christopher resumed posing for photographs.

His smile returned.

Thirty seconds later, he was laughing beside the film’s director.

Emily stood beside Nia, staring at her phone.

“I can send you the video.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

Nia looked toward Christopher.

“You didn’t do it.”

Emily’s thumb hovered over the screen.

Several witnesses had begun asking whether she captured what happened.

One young man said, “Post it.”

Another said, “People need to see that.”

Emily looked at Nia.

“Are you okay with me sharing it?”

Nia looked at Malik.

His face was turned against her dress.

She wanted to say no.

She wanted to take him home and erase the entire evening.

Then Christopher glanced back.

For one second, his eyes met hers.

There was no remorse there.

Only annoyance.

As though Malik’s pain were an inconvenience.

Nia looked at Emily.

“Show exactly what happened.”

Emily posted the video.

Twelve minutes later, Christopher’s phone vibrated inside his tuxedo jacket.

His longtime publicist, Daniel Reed, was calling.

Christopher stepped away from a cluster of reporters.

“What?”

Daniel’s voice was breathless.

“Chris, don’t say anything to anyone.”

“What are you talking about?”

“The video.”

Christopher looked across the carpet.

Emily was still holding her phone.

Nia was kneeling beside Malik.

“What video?”

“The kid.”

Christopher’s face went still.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“It’s everywhere.”

Christopher swallowed.

“So?”

There was a long pause.

Then Daniel said the words Christopher had never expected to hear over something that had lasted less than five seconds.

“The studio wants answers.”

Christopher slowly looked toward Malik.

For the first time that evening, there was fear in his eyes.

And Malik never saw it.

He was still staring at the floor.
