Chapter 17 - Evelyn

Grant Mercer's statement was eighty-three pages.

Dana shared only portions through Sarah because the investigation remained active.

Grant admitted preserving David's administrator identity.

He admitted creating monitoring procedures around Michael after the financial transfers.

He admitted using corporate contractors to track Michael's known associates.

But he denied designing the theft.

He claimed Evelyn Ross had presented him with executive authorizations and told him the security measures were necessary to protect Brightwell from an internal extortion scheme.

Michael laughed.

"He tracked my daughter."

Dana said, "He characterizes that differently."

"Of course he does."

David asked, "What about the West Virginia cabin?"

Dana looked at her notes.

"Grant admits arranging it."

Michael stood.

"He was helping me?"

"According to him, yes."

"While threatening me?"

"He says the threat was intended to keep you away from Brightwell until he could determine who inside the company was responsible."

Michael stared.

"That makes no sense."

David wasn't sure.

Some pieces did.

Grant had opportunities to expose Michael's location.

Yet Michael remained alive and hidden for years.

Maybe Grant had been controlling him.

Maybe protecting him.

Maybe both.

Dana continued.

"Grant claims Evelyn told him Michael had stolen funds and possessed evidence implicating senior executives. Grant says he later became suspicious because she repeatedly prevented him from turning information over to outside investigators."

Sarah asked, "Why wait three years?"

"He says he feared criminal liability."

Michael muttered, "Translation: he feared prison."

Dana didn't disagree.

Claire asked, "Did he enter our house?"

"No."

"The tracking device?"

"His department inventory."

"That isn't an answer."

"He says devices were accessible to several investigators."

David asked, "Did he know Michael was in the basement?"

"Not until the news leak."

Claire whispered, "Then Evelyn knew."

Dana looked at her.

"Possibly."

Nora had placed Evelyn inside the house.

Traffic records supported it.

The threatening note appeared the same night.

The case against her was growing.

But Jonathan remained everywhere.

His approval codes.

His connection to Thomas.

His settlement pressure against Nora.

His leadership over Brightwell.

Sarah warned against assuming Grant's version cleared him.

"People cooperate strategically."

David agreed.

"So does Jonathan."

The next morning, Jonathan requested a meeting through counsel.

Sarah nearly laughed when she read the invitation.

"He wants David and Claire."

Claire frowned.

"Why me?"

"Ownership."

The meeting occurred at Sarah's office with lawyers present.

Jonathan arrived looking almost exactly as David remembered him.

Silver hair.

Measured posture.

Quiet confidence.

He smiled at David.

"It's been a long time."

David didn't return it.

Jonathan looked at Claire.

"You resemble Robert."

"People keep telling me things about my father lately."

Jonathan accepted the insult.

His attorney placed a proposal on the table.

Brightwell would recognize a negotiated historical interest held by the Bennett trust and establish a settlement fund worth twenty-five million dollars.

In exchange, Claire would release all ownership claims.

Michael nearly stood.

Sarah stopped him with a look.

Claire stared at the number.

Twenty-five million.

More money than she had ever imagined.

Jonathan said, "This avoids years of litigation."

Claire asked, "And what happens to the fraud investigation?"

"That's separate."

"Is it?"

"Entirely."

David said, "Why offer twenty-five million if the claim is weak?"

Jonathan looked at him.

"Because uncertainty has value."

"Or danger."

Jonathan's smile faded.

Claire pushed the document back.

"No."

Her mother gasped softly.

Even Sarah seemed surprised by the speed.

Jonathan said, "You haven't read it."

"I don't need to."

"Claire—"

"My daughter spent three years believing her father abandoned her."

Jonathan remained silent.

"My husband learned his identity had been used in a multimillion-dollar crime."

Still nothing.

"My mother accepted money because she was afraid of you."

Jonathan looked toward Nora.

Nora stared at the floor.

Claire continued.

"And now you're offering me twenty-five million dollars before anyone has even finished reading the files."

Her voice remained calm.

"That isn't a settlement."

"What is it?"

"A confession that you're scared."

Jonathan's attorney objected.

Claire ignored him.

Jonathan looked at David.

"You've influenced her."

David replied, "You still think everyone belongs to someone else."

For the first time, Jonathan showed anger.

Only a flash.

Then gone.

He stood.

"Be careful, David."

Sarah immediately said, "No threats."

Jonathan looked at her.

"Advice."

He turned toward Claire.

"Robert once believed exposing everything was worth any cost."

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"Was he wrong?"

Jonathan paused.

"Ask your mother."

Then he left.

Nora went pale.

David confronted her immediately.

"What did he mean?"

Nora shook her head.

"I don't know."

Claire stared at her.

"Mom."

Nora closed her eyes.

"Robert was going to publish North Star."

"When?"

"The week he died."

Sarah raised a hand.

"We have no evidence his death was anything other than natural."

"I know."

Nora continued.

"The night before he was hospitalized, we argued."

"About what?"

"He wanted to tell Claire everything."

Claire whispered, "Everything about the trust?"

"Everything."

"Why didn't he?"

"Because I begged him not to."

Claire looked stunned.

Nora cried.

"I thought we'd lose the house. Your future. Maybe people would come after you."

Michael looked at her.

"So you stopped him."

"I delayed him."

"There's a difference?"

"Yes!"

Nora covered her face.

"He went to bed angry. The next morning he collapsed."

Claire's anger weakened.

Nora whispered, "My last real conversation with your father was me asking him to keep lying to you."

The room fell quiet.

Then Sarah's phone rang.

Dana.

She listened for less than a minute.

Her expression changed.

"What?"

She hung up.

"Evelyn Ross is gone."

David frowned.

"Gone where?"

"No one knows."

Michael whispered, "She ran."

Sarah shook her head.

"Maybe."

Dana had sent one additional detail.

Before disappearing, Evelyn accessed Brightwell's legal archive.

She downloaded one file.

BENNETT SUCCESSION / CONTINGENCY

Then deleted the server copy.

Paul still had a backup.

They opened it.

The contingency document contained a series of legal strategies for neutralizing Claire's ownership claim.

One section was titled:

MARITAL EXPOSURE.

Under Michael Bennett's name:

Financial liability may impair successor credibility.

Under David Hale's name:

Prior access history may establish continuity of control.

Claire stared.

"They planned to use whoever I married."

David felt cold.

Michael whispered, "We were never the target."

May you like

Claire looked at both men.

"I was."
