Chapter 13 - The Real ProductGrayline’s public product was scoring.

Its most valuable private asset was prediction.

VALOR INDEX claimed to identify training patterns associated with performance consistency.

Nothing inherently sinister.

Sports and training industries use analytics.

But Grayline’s implementation blurred lines.

The Navy contract allowed aggregate, de-identified data to improve system.

Grayline combined:

Target scores.

Timing.

Equipment interactions.

Remediation frequency.

Instructor overrides.

Support tickets.

And eventually stakeholder profiles.

The company told investors this created “behavioral performance intelligence.”

Emma asked Navy counsel:

“Did we authorize commercial resale?”

Counsel read contract.

“Ambiguous.”

Worst word in procurement.

Grayline argued derivative models belonged to company.

Navy argued service-member data subject to restrictions.

Federal privacy offices joined.

The issue was not that Grayline knew how people fired weapons. Need avoid technical.

It knew how trainees reacted to correction, failure, and authority.

Maya’s refusal to accept wrong score became escalation risk.

Ryan’s trust became low challenge.

Daniel’s preference for certified reports became administrative trust.

Human traits turned into customer-management model.

Emma’s own prior failure became “personal sensitivity.”

Grayline had created profiles to shape persuasion.

Michael admitted investors loved it.

“It made contract sticky.”

Meaning company could anticipate resistance.

Emma said:

“That's not training analytics.”

“No.”

“What did you call internally?”

“Human adoption layer.”

Corporate language again.

One email from CEO Victor Shaw:

Technology doesn't fail in market; people fail to trust it. Model people too.

There.

Philosophy.

Not necessarily crime.

But it explained everything.

If person contradicted machine, Grayline's model treated person as adoption problem.

Maya was not evidence system wrong.

She was resistance.

Ryan was ideal client because he believed.

Emma was adversarial.

This worldview enabled cover-up.

Grayline's board argued rogue misuse beyond intent.

Maybe.

Federal trade and procurement regulators examined representations.

Military suspended data-sharing clause.

VALOR sales halted.

Several private security companies had purchased.

No evidence it had caused harm there.

Do not overstate.

Emma focused.

At doctrine meeting Ryan said:

“This is why they loved me.”

Daniel replied:

“Don't make yourself victim.”

Ryan looked.

“Fair.”

He was both manipulated and responsible.

Growing.

Maya joined data governance review as enlisted representative.

She asked engineers blunt questions.

One said model used “noncompliant response.”

She asked:

“Noncompliant with policy or with software?”

Silence.

Wording changed.

Good.

Emma’s team recommended all automated training tools must preserve immutable raw record accessible independent of vendor. We can say "unaltered source data" not technical.

Also clear human appeal path.

No one person/vendor final.

Thomas Cole’s principle institutionalized.

Then family complication.

Carol suffered a mild health issue? Sensitive user teen but health okay. Could avoid because not needed. She simply invited sons for Thanksgiving.

Michael still awaiting sentencing under supervised release.

Ryan came.

Michael came.

Neither wanted.

Carol said:

“Your father’s chair is not courtroom.”

No arguing case at dinner.

They ate.

After, Michael gave Ryan envelope.

“What?”

“My remaining Grayline shares.”

Ryan looked horrified.

“I don't want them.”

“Not gift. I’m surrendering to restitution trust. Need family conflict acknowledgment.”

Paper required Ryan certify he had no beneficial ownership.

Ryan signed.

Michael said:

“I never gave you money.”

“No.”

“But I used your name to make mine.”

Ryan looked at him.

“That hurt more.”

Michael nodded.

“I know.”

Ryan asked:

“Did you ever brag about me to investors?”

Michael laughed through tears.

“All the time.”

Ryan’s anger complicated.

Love and exploitation coexisted.

Michael admired brother.

Used him.

People can do both.

Ryan said:

“I don't know what we are after this.”

“Brothers.”

“That's biology.”

Michael smiled faintly.

“Then start there.”

No hug.

But they washed dishes together.

Carol pretended not to watch.

At Grayline hearing, Victor Shaw testified board believed Auto-Normalize technical.

Emma asked:

“Did you read Maya complaint?”

“No.”

“Why ask whether incident closed?”

“Contract risk.”

“Did you want truth?”

“I wanted resolution.”

Emma stared.

“That isn't same.”

He knew.

Investor case moved.

Michael cooperation implicated Victor in inflated metric approval. Victor denied knowing figures false.

Auditors showed email:

23 reads better. Can methodology support?

Analyst:

Only with normalized denominator.

Victor:

Use it. Footnote methodology.

Footnote omitted in investor deck.

Who removed?

Michael.

He admitted.

Victor later faced securities charges too.

No single villain.

Shared.

Emma’s investigation final hearing approached.

One question remained personally:

Would Ryan testify publicly about climate?

Command asked him.

He could submit written.

He chose live.

At hearing, he said:

“I thought demanding proof meant demanding obedience to whatever evidence I trusted.”

Then:

“When sailors disagreed with a system I believed in, I treated disagreement as weakness.”

He looked toward Maya in gallery.

“That made it easier for contractor error to become command truth.”

No dramatic apology toward her from stage.

He had already given privately.

This was institutional ownership.

A senator? Could be DoD administrative hearing, not politics. Fine.

Panel member asked:

“Would hidden software have mattered if leadership listened?”

Ryan answered:

“Yes. But it would have been found sooner.”

That was accurate.

Then Emma testified after.

She did not call Grayline evil.

She said:

“Automation amplified preexisting leadership habits. It did not create them.”

Harder lesson.

At end, Thomas Cole’s letter entered as optional exhibit? Better not. Family private. Ryan declined.

“Dad doesn't need to testify from grave.”

May you like

Growth.

The case belonged living.
