Chapter 8 - Owen Pike

By the time they reached the hotel, Owen was gone.

Clara had moved to a service hallway with Leo after seeing him through the peephole.

Hotel security searched the building.

Nothing.

Daniel found Clara sitting on the floor beside an ice machine, Leo asleep against her shoulder.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“You did the right thing.”

“Did he follow you?”

“No.”

Hannah crouched.

Clara recognized her.

“You.”

Hannah stopped.

“We’ve met?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“Police station.”

Clara’s voice tightened.

“You walked past the room when Brennan refused to take my report.”

Hannah’s face changed.

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“You were there?”

“Yes.”

Hannah looked devastated.

“I didn’t know.”

Clara believed her.

Barely.

They moved to another hotel arranged through Rebecca.

Then Hannah explained Owen.

Eighteen months earlier, Owen Pike appeared at her house after dark.

He admitted Richard had hired him to find Clara after Eleanor’s phone call.

“What did he confess?” Daniel asked.

“Surveillance.”

“Threats?”

“He called them warnings.”

Clara laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Hannah continued.

“Owen said Richard told him Clara had stolen company money and was unstable.”

Daniel looked at Clara.

“He believed Richard?”

“For a while.”

“What changed?”

Hannah looked at Clara.

“Owen started checking.”

Clara’s expression tightened.

“He watched me for months.”

“Yes.”

“He knew where I slept.”

“Probably.”

Clara looked sick.

Daniel reached toward her, then stopped.

She noticed.

After a moment, she took his hand herself.

Hannah continued.

“Owen found no evidence Clara accessed company funds.”

“So why keep following her?”

“Richard paid him.”

Clara whispered, “And threatened him.”

Hannah nodded.

“Owen has a daughter.”

Daniel understood instantly.

“Richard threatened her too?”

“Owen said Richard reminded him how much the company knew about his past.”

“What past?”

“Owen had been investigated for excessive force while he was a police officer.”

Daniel looked at Hannah.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Was he guilty?”

“I don’t know.”

Hannah was careful with uncertainty.

“He resigned before the investigation concluded.”

Clara asked, “Why did he come to you?”

“Because he wanted out.”

“Why not police?”

“He didn’t trust them.”

None of them laughed.

“What did you tell him?” Daniel asked.

“To bring evidence.”

“Did he?”

“Not enough.”

“What did he have?”

“A recording of Richard ordering continued surveillance.”

Clara’s eyes widened.

“Where is it?”

“Owen kept it.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Everybody has evidence they refuse to give anybody.”

Hannah nodded.

“Fear creates private archives.”

Clara looked toward Leo.

Daniel understood the subtext.

She had done the same.

“What happened after Owen met you?”

“He disappeared.”

“Until today.”

“Yes.”

Clara shook her head.

“He wasn’t helping me on the street.”

“You don’t know that,” Hannah said.

“He watched me.”

“He may have been watching whoever was watching you.”

Clara stared.

Daniel asked, “There was another person?”

Hannah looked at Clara.

“Did you ever notice anyone besides Owen?”

Clara hesitated.

“There was a woman sometimes.”

“Describe her.”

“Forties. Blonde. Expensive coat.”

Daniel froze.

“Kelly.”

“Who?”

“My assistant.”

Clara looked at him.

“Kelly Monroe?”

“Yes.”

Clara nodded slowly.

“I’ve seen her.”

Daniel felt betrayed all over again.

Kelly had worked for him for five years.

Scheduled Leo’s school pickups.

Handled his travel.

Knew when he was home.

Knew everything.

Hannah said, “That’s significant.”

Daniel called Rebecca.

“Pull Kelly’s employment records. Financial disclosures if we legally have them. Everything company counsel can access.”

Then he called the hotel front desk.

“Do not confirm this room to anyone.”

He hung up.

Clara looked at him.

“You’re taking over.”

“What?”

“Control.”

Daniel stopped.

She continued carefully.

“I know you’re trying to protect us.”

He heard his mother.

His father.

Every secret justified by protection.

Daniel forced himself to slow down.

“What do you want?”

Clara seemed surprised.

“What?”

“What do you want to happen tonight?”

She thought.

“I want Leo somewhere safe.”

“Okay.”

“I want to stay with him.”

“Okay.”

“I want Hannah nearby.”

Hannah nodded.

“And you?”

Clara looked at Daniel.

“I want you here.”

The answer hit him harder than expected.

“Then I’m here.”

No command.

No decision disguised as care.

A choice.

For the first time since the sidewalk, Clara’s shoulders lowered.

Leo stirred.

“Mom?”

Clara bent immediately.

“I’m here.”

His eyes opened.

“You’re still here.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked away because he suddenly could not stop crying.

Leo sat up.

“Dad?”

“I’m okay.”

The boy frowned.

“Adults say that when they’re not.”

Hannah smiled faintly.

Daniel wiped his face.

“Fair.”

His phone vibrated.

A message from Kelly.

Richard says you canceled tomorrow’s board review. Everything okay?

Daniel stared.

Richard had not called.

Kelly had.

Meaning Richard was using her.

Daniel typed:

Everything’s fine. Family issue. I’ll call tomorrow.

Three dots appeared.

Then vanished.

Clara watched him.

“What?”

Daniel showed her.

Her face drained.

Another message arrived.

Is Leo with you?

Daniel did not answer.

Thirty seconds later:

Daniel?

Hannah whispered, “She isn’t asking about you.”

Daniel nodded.

“She wants to know where Leo is.”

Clara pulled their son closer.

The conspiracy was no longer abstract.

Someone inside Daniel’s daily life had been reporting his child’s movements.

And now they knew exactly where to start looking.
