Chapter 10 - The FrameRobert told Daniel not to delete anything.

Not messages.
Not apps.
Not emails.
Not even the files that made him look guilty.
"Especially those," Robert said.
They drove directly to Sonoran Data Systems in Tempe after Daniel contacted an attorney recommended by Robert's former union.
The lawyer, Rachel Kim, met them outside.
She was forty, calm, efficient, and unimpressed by Robert's retired badge.
"I represent Daniel," she said. "Not you."
Robert nodded.
Daniel almost smiled.
Inside, corporate security presented the problem.
Three wire transfers totaling $380,000 had been authorized through Daniel's administrator account over six weeks.
Each occurred after midnight.
Multifactor authentication came from Daniel's phone.
His credentials.
His device.
His home network.
Daniel looked stunned.
"I didn't do this."
Martin Ellis, the security director, looked genuinely disappointed rather than accusatory.
"We're not concluding anything yet."
Rachel asked, "Have you notified law enforcement?"
"Yes."
"Which agency?"
"Tempe Police and the FBI cybercrime contact required under our insurance policy."
Robert stayed silent.
Good.
This was bigger than a workplace dispute.
Rachel asked whether Daniel could show evidence of unauthorized access to his devices.
Daniel looked at Robert.
Robert said nothing.
It had to be Daniel's answer.
"Yes," Daniel said.
"I have video of Vanessa Morfield accessing my laptop while I was asleep."
Ellis's expression changed.
Rachel looked at him.
"How did you obtain that video?"
"It was on a drive I copied from her apartment."
"Without permission?"
"Yes."
Rachel sighed.
"That complicates admissibility but doesn't make the underlying conduct disappear."
Daniel explained the hidden recordings.
The fake files.
The threats.
He gave them Vanessa's message from Voss.
By noon, the company placed Daniel on paid administrative leave rather than terminating him.
His laptop and phone were preserved for forensic examination.
Outside, Daniel leaned against Robert's truck.
"My whole career."
"Not necessarily."
"My name is on those transfers."
"Digital evidence can be examined."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You know what the worst part is?"
"What?"
"I almost gave Vanessa my work token voluntarily."
Robert looked at him.
"Why?"
"She said she wanted to understand what I did."
Daniel stared across the parking lot.
"I thought it was sweet."
Robert did not say what he might once have said.
You should have known better.
Instead he said, "Manipulation works because it doesn't look stupid while it's happening."
Daniel looked at him.
"That from your detective handbook?"
"No."
"Then where?"
"Experience."
Daniel waited.
Robert exhaled.
"Your mother manipulated me into attending three separate couples-retreat weekends."
Daniel laughed despite himself.
"Mom?"
"She called them anniversary trips."
"That's not manipulation."
"She hid the brochures until we were already checked into the hotel."
For twenty seconds, fear loosened its grip.
Then Vanessa called Robert.
He answered on speaker with Rachel's permission.
"Robert."
"What?"
"I found something."
"Where are you?"
"Not important."
"It is to me."
"I know."
Her voice sounded exhausted.
"Voss gave me access to Daniel's apartment three months ago."
Daniel's face hardened.
"Why?" Robert asked.
"He said Daniel had taken something from me."
"What?"
"The blue key."
Robert looked at Rachel.
Vanessa continued.
"I searched his apartment. I didn't find it."
"Because Daniel never had it."
"I know that now."
"Who planted the transfer evidence?"
"I don't know."
"That's not useful."
"Voss had a man named Eric Dane helping him."
Robert knew the name.
Former private investigator.
License suspended twice.
"What does Dane do?"
"Surveillance. Computers. Whatever Voss needs."
"Where is he?"
"I don't know."
"Vanessa."
"I swear."
Robert hated that he could no longer tell whether her fear was real.
Then she said, "I can prove I didn't make the transfers."
"How?"
"Voss keeps a second phone."
"So?"
"Three weeks ago I photographed messages on it."
"Messages with Dane?"
"Yes."
Robert's pulse lifted.
"What did they say?"
"One said, 'Build the son before Thanksgiving.'"
Daniel closed his eyes.
Another layer of preparation.
Robert asked, "Why photograph them?"
"Because I stopped trusting Voss."
"When?"
A long pause.
"When he told me Donna deserved cancer."
Robert felt something in him turn hard.
Daniel whispered, "Jesus."
Vanessa continued.
"I knew then he didn't care about my mother. He cared about making me hate yours."
"Where are the photographs?"
"Cloud account."
"Send them to Rachel Kim."
"Who?"
Daniel spoke for the first time.
"My attorney."
Vanessa went silent.
"You're there."
"Yes."
"Daniel, I—"
"No."
He ended the call.
Rachel studied him.
"Good."
"What?"
"Boundaries."
Robert pretended not to notice the word.
Twenty minutes later, Vanessa sent fourteen photographs.
Messages between Voss and Eric Dane.
One referred to Daniel's credentials.
Another referenced "pressure leverage."
Then Rachel enlarged the final image.
A photograph Voss had sent Dane.
Robert's house.
Taken that morning.
The caption read:
CALLAHAN HAS THE KEY. GET INSIDE BEFORE POLICE DO.
Robert grabbed his phone.
Carol was still at his house.
She answered on the first ring.
"Robert?"
"Where are you?"
"Kitchen."
"Lock the doors. Now."
"Why?"
"Do it."
May you like
Robert heard movement.
Then Carol whispered, "Someone's in the garage."
