Chapter 11 - The Boardroom

The emergency board meeting began at nine.

By nine fifteen, there were protesters outside Asheford’s administration building.

By nine thirty, three television helicopters circled above campus.

Gregory Cole entered the boardroom smiling.

Sophia hated him for that smile.

Richard sat beside her.

Claire sat behind them.

Madison attended with her attorney.

Dr. Pierce sat alone near the wall.

Twelve trustees occupied the long table.

Gregory called the session to order.

“This university has been dragged into a media spectacle created by personal disputes, unauthorized access to confidential information, and irresponsible accusations.”

Sophia watched the trustees.

Some avoided her eyes.

Gregory continued.

“I propose immediate suspension of the Catherine Bennett Memorial Scholarship pending independent review.”

Richard spoke.

“By whom?”

Gregory smiled.

“A qualified firm.”

“Selected by you?”

“Selected by the board.”

“A board you chair.”

Gregory leaned back.

“Richard, if you intend to intimidate trustees with your wealth—”

Sophia laughed.

Everyone looked at her.

“Sorry.”

Gregory frowned.

“Something amusing?”

“You’re accusing my father of using wealth to control a board you’ve controlled with wealth for nine years.”

One trustee coughed to hide a smile.

Gregory’s face tightened.

“Sophia, this is a formal meeting.”

“Good.”

She stood.

“Then let’s use formal evidence.”

Claire distributed packets.

Bank records.

Vendor reports.

Student affidavits.

Corporate ownership documents.

The surveillance image of David Rusk reaching into Sophia’s bag.

Gregory did not look down.

Sophia continued.

“Thirty-nine students in our current sample received less aid than records represented to donors.”

A trustee flipped pages rapidly.

“Is this verified?”

Claire answered.

“Each affidavit has been independently corroborated with available billing records.”

Another trustee asked, “How much money?”

“Potentially more than eleven million dollars in principal.”

The room erupted.

Gregory raised his hand.

“Allegations.”

Madison stood.

Her attorney whispered something.

She shook her head.

“I’ll speak.”

Gregory stared at her.

“Sit down.”

Madison’s face changed.

Not fear.

Decision.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

But she remained standing.

“My father knew Sophia was Richard Bennett’s daughter three months ago.”

Gregory said, “Madison.”

“He instructed me to monitor her.”

“Your lawyer should stop you.”

“He told me to damage her credibility if she investigated the scholarship.”

Gregory stood.

“She is emotionally unstable.”

Madison laughed bitterly.

“There it is.”

She placed her phone on the table.

Claire connected it to the room’s audio system.

Gregory’s recorded voice filled the boardroom.

Keep Bennett’s girl out of anything involving the scholarship.

Then Martin Vale.

She reaches twenty-one, she can demand a forensic audit.

Then Gregory.

Discredit her.

The recording ended.

No one moved.

Gregory’s face had become colorless.

“This recording was illegally obtained.”

Madison’s attorney spoke.

“Massachusetts permits recording where applicable legal requirements are met only under specific circumstances. We are not conceding admissibility in any criminal proceeding. But the board is entitled to consider the information voluntarily provided by my client.”

Gregory glared at his daughter.

“You stupid child.”

Madison flinched.

Every trustee heard it.

Sophia watched something die in Madison’s expression.

Gregory realized too late.

Dr. Pierce stood.

“I need to say something.”

Gregory turned.

“No.”

Pierce looked at him.

“For twelve years, I told myself compromise was leadership.”

His voice shook.

“It wasn’t.”

He faced the board.

“Mr. Cole pressured my office to initiate disciplinary action against Sophia Bennett.”

The trustees stared.

“He also pressured campus security to treat anonymous allegations against her as credible despite irregular evidence.”

Gregory shouted, “That is a lie!”

Pierce continued.

“Two days ago, I was instructed to approve her suspension before I had reviewed the underlying report.”

Sophia looked at Pierce.

He looked ashamed.

“I did it.”

He turned toward her.

“I am sorry.”

Sophia nodded once.

Not forgiveness.

Acknowledgment.

Richard stood.

“My company also failed.”

Sophia looked at him.

Richard faced the board.

“Bennett Global profited from investment transactions that appear to have included diverted scholarship funds.”

Gasps.

Gregory smiled suddenly.

There it was.

The counterattack.

“So you admit it.”

Richard looked at him.

“I admit negligence.”

“You approved transactions.”

“I approved transactions I believed legitimate.”

“Convenient.”

Richard did not flinch.

“Three years ago, I was informed of a discrepancy and failed to order an external audit.”

Claire closed her eyes.

This was the confession they had discussed.

Richard continued.

“That decision was mine. It was cowardly. Students suffered because I preferred reassurance to scrutiny.”

Sophia felt tears burn her eyes.

Gregory laughed.

“Then perhaps the board should investigate the Bennett family rather than me.”

Sophia spoke.

“They should investigate everyone.”

Gregory stared at her.

“Even him?”

She looked at her father.

“Yes.”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

The answer destroyed Gregory’s strategy.

He had counted on them protecting their name.

They refused.

Two hours later, nine trustees voted to remove Gregory Cole as board chairman pending investigation.

Ten voted to suspend all contracts involving Cole Fiduciary Services.

Eleven authorized a forensic audit.

Gregory left without speaking to Madison.

Sophia watched him cross the hallway.

For the first time, he looked small.

Claire’s phone rang.

Her expression immediately changed.

“What?”

She moved toward Richard.

“Martin Vale attempted to wire six point four million dollars from a Bennett Ventures account this morning.”

Richard stood.

“To where?”

“An offshore account.”

“Did it clear?”

“We don’t know.”

Sophia’s relief vanished.

The boardroom battle was over.

The money was moving.
