Chapter 7 - The Price of SilenceGrant called Vanessa that night.

She was alone in a guest bedroom at Ashbourne because Ethan had refused to share a room with her.

Her phone vibrated at 1:17 a.m.

UNKNOWN CALLER.

She answered.

"Grant?"

"You sound disappointed."

"You were here."

"Beautiful wedding."

Vanessa gripped the phone.

"You photographed me."

"You were memorable."

"You said nobody would get hurt."

Grant laughed.

"Nobody got hurt."

"You destroyed my marriage."

"No, Vanessa. You did that."

The words landed because they were true.

"What do you want?"

"Same thing I've always wanted."

"Ashbourne is in an irrevocable trust."

"I know."

"Then you lost."

"No."

Grant's voice softened.

"The property was Plan A."

Vanessa stared into the dark.

"What's Plan B?"

"Evelyn pays."

"For what?"

"The original records."

"You have them."

"I have enough to embarrass her. Not enough to protect myself."

Vanessa understood.

Richard's hidden box contained evidence against Grant too.

"Then why take it?"

"Because evidence has different value depending on who holds it."

"You want money."

"Fifteen million."

She almost laughed.

"Evelyn won't pay."

"She paid six million once."

"That was fifteen years ago."

"People don't become less protective with age."

Grant paused.

"Especially mothers."

Vanessa felt sick.

"What does that have to do with me?"

"You're going to convince Ethan."

"No."

"You don't have many bargaining chips left."

"I said no."

Grant's voice changed.

"You forged his signature."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"You submitted false financial documents."

"I know."

"You took a one-point-two-million-dollar advance."

"I can repay it."

"With what?"

Silence.

Grant continued.

"You also sent me confidential company information."

"Nothing material."

"That's not for you to decide."

"What are you threatening?"

"Nothing. I'm reminding you that when this ends, Evelyn has attorneys, Ethan has money, and I have leverage."

"And I have what?"

"The chance to avoid prison."

Vanessa's hand shook.

"Fifteen million."

"Tell Ethan I will exchange every original record for the money."

"And then?"

"Then everyone walks away."

Vanessa almost believed him.

That frightened her most.

"Why should I trust you?"

"You shouldn't."

The call ended.

Vanessa sat in darkness.

For the first time in eighteen months, Grant had said something completely honest.

She walked to Ethan's room.

Raised her hand.

Stopped.

She imagined confessing.

She imagined his face.

Then she heard voices downstairs.

Evelyn and Claire.

Vanessa descended quietly.

They were in the library.

Claire was saying, "If Grant releases those records selectively, he can make Richard look solely responsible."

"I know."

"And the company?"

"Could survive financially."

"Reputationally?"

Evelyn did not answer.

Claire lowered her voice.

"There's another issue."

Vanessa leaned closer to the partially open door.

"The board may ask Ethan to step aside."

Evelyn said, "Ethan had nothing to do with events fifteen years ago."

"That won't matter if Grant frames this as a continuing Caldwell cover-up."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

This was her fault.

Not all of it.

But enough.

She entered.

Evelyn looked up.

"How long have you been listening?"

"Long enough."

Claire watched her carefully.

Vanessa placed the phone on the desk.

"Grant called."

Evelyn stood.

"What does he want?"

"Fifteen million dollars."

"For R-17?"

"Yes."

Claire immediately began taking notes.

Evelyn asked, "What did you tell him?"

"Nothing."

"Did you record it?"

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"No. Apparently I'm still bad at this."

Evelyn stared at her.

Vanessa looked toward the fireplace.

"He says he'll trade the originals."

"He won't."

"I know."

That answer surprised Evelyn.

Vanessa met her eyes.

"He'll take the money and keep copies."

"Yes."

"And if you don't pay, he'll release enough to destroy Richard's reputation and make the board think you covered up criminal conduct."

"Yes."

Vanessa swallowed.

"He wants me to convince Ethan."

Evelyn's expression hardened.

"You will not."

"I wasn't planning to."

"Good."

Vanessa turned toward the door.

"Vanessa."

She stopped.

Evelyn's voice was quieter.

"Why are you telling me?"

Vanessa stared into the hallway.

"Because today I finally understood something."

"What?"

Vanessa looked back.

"When I tore your letter, I thought the worst thing you could do was deny me money."

Her eyes glistened.

"I didn't understand the worst thing I'd already done was make your son unable to trust anyone."

Evelyn said nothing.

Vanessa went upstairs.

Claire watched her leave.

"Do you believe her?"

Evelyn looked at the phone on the desk.

"No."

Then she looked toward the doorway.

"But I believe she's afraid of Grant."

Claire nodded.

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

"And afraid people make mistakes."

"What are you thinking?"

Evelyn looked toward the dark windows.

"That Grant has spent fifteen years assuming fear makes people obedient."

May you like

She picked up Vanessa's phone.

"Perhaps it's time he learned fear can also make them unpredictable."
