Chapter 7 - Maria's SecretDaniel didn't sleep.

By sunrise, three law firms were working on emergency filings.
The questionable authorization Evelyn had signed was being challenged.
Banks received formal notice of disputed authority.
Sterling Holdings froze unusual transfers.
Daniel ordered an independent forensic review.
Then he turned toward Maria.
“We need to talk.”
Maria knew the tone.
Not employer to employee.
Not grateful son to woman who saved his mother.
Interrogator to witness.
They sat in the library.
Evelyn wasn't present.
“You came to this house because of your mother.”
“Yes.”
“How long had you been planning it?”
“About eight months.”
Daniel frowned.
“That long?”
“I found one of her boxes after my aunt died.”
Inside had been old employment papers.
Letters.
A photograph of Rosa standing beside Evelyn at a charity event.
And an unsigned note.
If anything happens to me, the numbers in the foundation don't make sense.
Maria had read it a hundred times.
She had applied to three Sterling properties before finally being hired through a domestic staffing agency for Evelyn's residence.
“Why didn't you go to police?” Daniel asked.
“With what?”
“A note.”
“A note isn't proof.”
“You could have contacted my company.”
Maria laughed.
“Your company blamed her.”
Daniel accepted the point.
“Why my mother's house?”
“Because Rosa trusted her.”
“Yet you're angry with her.”
“Yes.”
“Those aren't contradictory to you?”
“People are contradictory.”
Daniel looked toward the fireplace.
He almost smiled.
Then his expression became serious again.
“Did you steal anything?”
Maria stood.
“No.”
“Documents?”
“No.”
“Photographs?”
She hesitated.
Daniel noticed.
“What did you photograph?”
“One page.”
“Of what?”
“Your mother's old charity ledger.”
“When?”
“Two weeks ago.”
Daniel stood too.
“You went through her private records?”
“The ledger was open on her desk.”
“And you photographed it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because it had my mother's name beside an eighty-two-thousand-dollar adjustment.”
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
Maria could see his conflict.
She had saved Evelyn.
But she had also entered their household with a hidden purpose.
“You should fire me,” she said.
“That would make this simpler.”
“I don't care about simple.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I care whether I can trust you.”
Maria's voice lowered.
“You were going to marry Victoria yesterday.”
He flinched.
“So maybe your instincts aren't perfect either.”
For a second she thought she'd gone too far.
Then Daniel laughed.
Once.
Without humor.
“That's fair.”
His phone buzzed.
A headline appeared.
MILLIONAIRE GROOM CANCELS WEDDING AFTER HOUSEMAID ASSAULTS BRIDE.
Underneath was a photograph of Maria.
Victoria had given an interview.
She claimed Maria had developed an “unhealthy fixation” on the Sterling family and attacked her without provocation.
Then came the worst sentence.
Sources close to Victoria Hart allege Maria Alvarez is the daughter of a former Sterling employee accused of financial theft.
Maria stared.
Daniel swore.
Victoria had exposed Rosa publicly.
Again.
“She knew who I was,” Maria whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“She knew before the wedding.”
“How?”
“She had to.”
Maria's application contained her full legal name.
Victoria had access to household staffing decisions.
If she'd investigated Maria, she could easily have connected the name.
Daniel called security.
“Pull every request Victoria made involving household staff for the last three months.”
Twenty minutes later they had the answer.
Victoria had asked for Maria's personnel file six days after she was hired.
Reason:
Wedding security screening.
Maria felt cold.
“She knew.”
Daniel nodded.
“And she kept you here.”
“Why?”
Evelyn entered the library.
Her nurse pushed the wheelchair.
“Because she needed someone to blame.”
Everyone turned.
Evelyn looked exhausted.
But certain.
“Victoria asked me about Maria several times.”
“What did she ask?” Daniel said.
“Whether Maria handled my jewelry.”
Maria's stomach dropped.
“Yes,” Evelyn continued. “She asked whether Maria had access to my bedroom. Whether I trusted her. Whether she knew where I kept valuables.”
Daniel looked at Maria.
Victoria's plan was becoming visible.
If Evelyn refused to cooperate, Victoria could discredit the caregiver closest to her.
A maid.
Daughter of an accused thief.
Perfect.
Daniel's security chief entered.
“Mr. Sterling.”
“What?”
“We found something in the staff changing area.”
He held a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a sapphire necklace.
Evelyn gasped.
“My mother's necklace.”
Maria stared.
“I've never seen that.”
“It was in locker fourteen.”
Maria's locker.
Daniel looked at the security chief.
“Who found it?”
“Victoria Hart.”
Silence.
Maria laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was almost elegant.
Victoria had constructed the accusation before the wedding.
She had known exactly who Maria was.
Exactly what Rosa had been accused of.
Exactly how easily history could be repeated.
Daniel looked at Maria.
She saw doubt.
Only for a moment.
But she saw it.
And that hurt more than Victoria's threats.
Then his phone rang.
NYPD.
May you like
Victoria had reported the necklace stolen.
And she had named Maria Alvarez as the thief.
