Chapter 4 - Box 417Hudson National Bank occupied a limestone building three blocks from Central Park.

Olivia brought a lawyer.

Not Dante’s.

Hers.

Maya Chen had been Olivia’s college roommate before becoming an associate at a Manhattan litigation firm.

She arrived angry.

“You called me at six in the morning and said, ‘I may own evidence connected to organized crime.’”

Olivia winced.

“I said I was sorry.”

“You sent a croissant.”

“It was almond.”

“That did help.”

Maya looked at Dante.

“But him being here does not.”

Dante remained expressionless.

“I agree.”

Maya blinked.

Olivia almost smiled.

The bank manager verified the key and Daniel Marshall’s records.

Box 417 had been paid through a trust for twelve years.

Olivia was listed as successor holder.

Inside the private room, the manager placed the long metal box on the table and left.

Maya said, “Before we open this, nobody touches anything without gloves.”

Dante glanced at her.

“You’re good.”

“I’m expensive.”

Olivia inserted the key.

Inside were several folders, a flash drive, two notarized affidavits and a stack of old financial ledgers.

There was no cash.

No diamonds.

No gun.

Olivia exhaled.

Maya opened the first affidavit.

“Daniel says he transferred eighteen million dollars from Moretti Consolidated into an escrow account under instructions from…”

She stopped.

Dante leaned forward.

“Who?”

Maya looked at him.

“Alessandro Moretti.”

Dante’s father.

For several seconds, Dante did not react.

Then he sat.

“My father authorized it?”

“According to this.”

Olivia opened another folder.

There were copies of emails.

Alessandro Moretti had written Daniel repeatedly during the final months before his death.

Keep the reserve outside Carlo’s reach.

Do not tell Dante yet.

I need proof before I put my sons against their uncle.

Olivia looked up.

“Sons?”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“My younger brother, Matteo.”

“What happened to him?”

“He died five years ago.”

Olivia did not ask how.

Not yet.

Maya continued reading.

The eighteen million dollars had not been stolen.

It had been transferred into a protected escrow account controlled jointly by Daniel and a Manhattan trust attorney named Jonathan Hale.

Its purpose was to prevent Carlo Moretti from using corporate reserves to finance a secret acquisition.

Maya frowned.

“This gets stranger.”

“What?”

“The acquisition target was Moretti Consolidated itself.”

Olivia stared.

“You can buy your own company?”

“Through shell entities, debt and proxy voting, you can try.”

Dante understood first.

“Carlo was planning a leveraged takeover.”

Maya nodded.

“Your father discovered it.”

Dante stood.

“He never told me.”

“He was collecting evidence.”

Olivia picked up the flash drive.

“What’s on this?”

Maya handed her a sealed note.

The handwriting belonged to Daniel.

For Dante, if Alessandro is dead.

Dante did not take it.

Olivia held it out.

“You should.”

He stared at the note.

“Your father didn’t trust me at the end.”

“He trusted you enough to leave this.”

Dante accepted it.

The flash drive contained financial records, internal memos and one video file.

Daniel appeared on screen.

Older.

Exhausted.

Olivia pressed one hand to her mouth.

“If this recording is being watched, then Carlo has probably convinced Dante that I stole the reserve.”

Dante’s face hardened.

Daniel continued.

“I did not.”

He described Alessandro’s investigation.

Carlo had created three shell companies.

He had bribed an outside auditor.

He had begun buying distressed Moretti debt through intermediaries.

Then Daniel said something that changed the room.

“Carlo knows Alessandro is going to expose him.”

Dante moved closer to the screen.

“If anything happens to Alessandro, Dante needs to look at the Harbor Point refinancing.”

The video ended.

Maya whispered, “When did your father die?”

Dante did not look away from the black screen.

“Three weeks after this recording.”

“Natural causes?”

Dante’s eyes lifted.

“Heart attack.”

Nobody spoke.

Maya broke the silence.

“We need copies.”

Dante said, “No.”

Olivia turned.

“No?”

“This stays protected.”

“It belongs to me.”

“Yes.”

“Then I decide.”

Dante looked at her.

“You don’t understand what Carlo will do.”

Olivia stepped closer.

“My apartment was destroyed before I even knew Carlo’s name.”

His expression changed.

She continued.

“So stop talking to me like I wandered into your war.”

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Then the door handle moved.

Maya froze.

The bank manager had said they would not be disturbed.

Dante stepped between Olivia and the door.

Rocco appeared outside.

His voice was sharp.

“Mr. Moretti.”

“What?”

“We have company.”

Through the frosted glass, Olivia saw three silhouettes.

Dante’s phone rang.

He answered.

Carlo Moretti’s voice was loud enough for Olivia to hear.

“Dante.”

Dante said nothing.

Carlo chuckled.

“You’ve been opening boxes that should have stayed closed.”

Olivia’s skin went cold.

Dante’s face became unreadable.

“How did you know where we were?”

Carlo paused.

Then he said, “That is the question you should be asking.”

Dante looked toward the hallway.

Toward his own security men.

May you like

For the first time, Olivia saw him understand that the betrayal was not buried seven years in the past.

It was standing somewhere very close to him.
