Chapter 11 - The Boardroom Confession

Malcolm denied everything.

He did so in front of the board, three attorneys, two federal investigators, and Adrian.

“No.”

Helen placed Lydia Carter’s recorded statement on the conference table.

Malcolm did not touch it.

Adrian stood across from his uncle.

“No what?”

“I did not enter that garage.”

“Lydia saw you.”

“Lydia Carter has every reason to protect herself.”

Daniel placed access records beside the statement.

A service elevator had traveled from the garage to the west wing at 12:03 a.m.

Malcolm’s suite occupied the west wing.

Malcolm smiled.

“Circumstantial.”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

The restraint surprised him.

Three months earlier, he would have pushed harder.

Now he had learned what Emma kept telling him.

Suspicion was not proof.

So he waited.

Helen spoke next.

“Malcolm, Rachel Wynn has provided emails showing you authorized payments to Cole Mercer.”

“For corporate security consulting.”

“She says otherwise.”

“She wants immunity.”

“True.”

Malcolm looked around.

“This is a collection of liars trying to save themselves.”

Emma sat at the far end of the room.

Her mother had agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.

Emma had not forgiven her.

Perhaps she never fully would.

But she had stopped confusing forgiveness with truth.

Adrian understood that lesson personally.

A federal investigator, Agent Laura Chen, opened a file.

“We also recovered audio from Samuel Carter’s Riverside archive.”

Malcolm’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

Chen played a recording.

Rachel’s voice:

“Mercer says the vehicle modification is ready.”

Malcolm answered:

“Good. Adrian needs to understand he is not invincible.”

Rachel:

“What if he’s injured?”

Malcolm:

“A few bruises may improve his judgment.”

The audio stopped.

Malcolm leaned back.

“That does not prove I authorized a crash.”

Adrian’s stomach turned.

His uncle was technically correct.

Then Chen played another recording.

Robert Vale’s voice.

“He won’t step aside for bruises.”

Malcolm answered:

“Then that is your problem, Robert.”

The room went silent.

Adrian stared at his uncle.

Malcolm looked at the table.

Chen said, “This conversation occurred forty minutes before the brake line was cut.”

Malcolm finally spoke.

“I did not tell Robert to kill him.”

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

“You knew he wanted more.”

“I knew Robert was desperate.”

“You brought him into the plan.”

“I wanted pressure.”

“You wanted control.”

“Yes.”

Malcolm looked at Adrian.

For the first time, the elegant uncle disappeared.

What remained was an old man who had spent half his life resenting his brother and nephew.

“Your father took everything.”

Adrian stared.

“He built the company.”

“We built it.”

“He owned the majority.”

“Because our father favored him.”

Emma watched silently.

Malcolm continued.

“Thomas made mistakes and called them strategy. I made mistakes and became the family embarrassment.”

“You stole pension money.”

“I borrowed liquidity.”

“You stole.”

“I returned most of it.”

“After Samuel caught you.”

Malcolm’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what it was like.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“No. But I know what it was like waking up in a hospital unable to move my legs because men like you decided my body was a business tool.”

Malcolm looked away.

Agent Chen asked, “Did you know Robert Vale intended to cut the hydraulic line?”

Malcolm remained silent.

“Did you enter the garage?”

Silence.

Adrian waited.

Finally Malcolm said:

“Yes.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Adrian felt nothing.

That frightened him more than anger would have.

“What did you do?”

Malcolm looked at him.

“I tried to stop Robert.”

Adrian stared.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I followed him when I realized he’d taken Lydia’s access card.”

“Why not call security?”

“Because Mercer was security.”

“Then call me.”

Malcolm laughed bitterly.

“And confess the entire incapacity plan?”

There it was.

Cowardice.

Not murder perhaps.

But the choice that allowed murder to happen.

Malcolm continued.

“When I entered, Robert had already cut the line.”

“What did you do?”

“I told him he was insane.”

“And then?”

“He said you would survive.”

Adrian’s hands tightened.

“You let me drive away.”

Malcolm’s eyes filled.

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

Malcolm looked down.

Adrian remembered the crash.

Rain on glass.

The brake pedal collapsing beneath his foot.

The guardrail rushing toward him.

Metal.

Darkness.

Then months of pain.

“You could have warned me with one phone call.”

“I know.”

“You could have stopped me at the gate.”

“I know.”

“You watched me leave.”

“Yes.”

The word broke something.

Agent Chen stood.

“Malcolm Blackwood, you are being placed under arrest pending charges related to conspiracy, obstruction, fraud, and evidence tampering.”

Malcolm looked at Adrian as agents approached.

“Adrian.”

He did not answer.

“Your father would have protected the company.”

Adrian finally looked at him.

“That’s why this happened.”

Malcolm frowned.

Adrian continued.

“My father protected the company from truth. You protected yourself from consequences. I protected Emma from knowledge she had the right to choose.”

Emma looked at him.

“We all called it protection.”

He stepped closer to Malcolm.

“It was control.”

Agents cuffed him.

Malcolm was led away.

The boardroom remained silent after the door closed.

Helen turned toward Adrian.

“The Harbor transaction is frozen.”

“Permanently?”

“Pending review.”

“And the trust?”

“The real amendment governs.”

Adrian nodded.

Susan Park, the director who had challenged his competence earlier, cleared her throat.

“There is another matter.”

Adrian looked at her.

“The board needs to determine whether you remain suitable as chief executive.”

Emma’s eyes widened.

Adrian did not seem surprised.

Susan continued.

“You concealed material medical information from shareholders.”

“For an investigation.”

“Without board authorization.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated public perception.”

“Yes.”

“You continued making decisions while creating the appearance that others were doing so for you.”

“Yes.”

Helen watched him.

Emma watched more carefully.

Old Adrian would have fought.

Instead he said:

“You should investigate me too.”

The board fell silent.

Adrian looked around the room.

“No more protected Blackwoods.”

Emma felt tears sting her eyes.

May you like

It was the first time she believed his secret recovery had changed more than his legs.
