Chapter 7 - What Ethan Really KnewEthan Caldwell sat alone in a rented apartment overlooking the Hudson River.

His attorney had advised him not to contact Evelyn directly.

He had ignored that advice six times.

Now his calls went unanswered.

His corporate accounts were disabled.

His promotion had vanished.

His relationship with Vanessa had become a liability.

And the company he believed he was destined to lead was investigating him.

He stared at a photograph of Evelyn taken during their second anniversary.

She wore a yellow sundress.

He had his arms around her.

They looked happy.

For a moment, he remembered that he had been happy.

Then his phone rang.

Richard Bellamy.

Ethan answered.

“What do you want?”

“You need to stop panicking.”

“I'm unemployed, Richard.”

“You'll survive.”

“My wife discovered everything.”

“Not everything.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“You said the vendor transfers were protected.”

“They were supposed to be.”

“You said no one would notice.”

Richard's voice hardened.

“Do not discuss those transactions over the telephone.”

“Then why did you call?”

“Because Vanessa has been talking.”

Ethan sat upright.

“What?”

“She met with Evelyn's attorney.”

Ethan swore.

Richard continued.

“You need to bring her under control.”

“No.”

Richard fell silent.

Ethan stared at the photograph again.

“No more intimidation. No more threats.”

“You're becoming sentimental.”

“I'm becoming careful.”

Richard laughed.

“You were never careful. That's why I selected you.”

The words struck Ethan.

“Selected me?”

“Don't pretend you weren't interested when I told you who Evelyn Bennett was.”

Ethan said nothing.

He remembered the night Richard approached him eight years earlier.

He was thirty-one.

Ambitious.

Deeply in debt from failed investments and a lifestyle he could not afford.

Richard had offered him consulting work.

Then an introduction.

A wealthy young woman.

An heiress who preferred anonymity.

Someone whose family possessed enough influence to transform his future.

Ethan had accepted.

At first, he had treated the relationship like an opportunity.

Then Evelyn had surprised him.

She was funny.

Intelligent.

Kind to strangers.

She remembered the names of waiters and security guards.

She listened when he spoke about his childhood.

And when his father died, she sat beside him through an entire night without saying anything unnecessary.

Somewhere along the way, he had begun loving her.

But he had never stopped wanting what she possessed.

And that contradiction had poisoned everything.

Richard spoke again.

“Remember your obligations.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“I don't owe you my daughter.”

“Then cooperate.”

The call ended.

Ethan sat motionless.

A knock came at the door.

Vanessa entered before he could answer.

She looked furious.

“You told me Evelyn was broke.”

Ethan stood.

“Vanessa, not now.”

“You told me she lived on your money!”

“It was complicated.”

“No. You lied.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Are you seriously accusing me of dishonesty?”

Vanessa flinched.

She had helped him deceive Evelyn.

She had laughed at a pregnant woman in front of hundreds of people.

But she was beginning to understand that Ethan had been deceiving her as well.

“Richard is threatening me,” she whispered.

Ethan looked sharply at her.

“What did he say?”

“That I could go to prison if I didn't cooperate.”

“Did you authorize any transfers?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Some payment instructions.”

“Under whose direction?”

“Yours.”

Ethan went still.

“That's not true.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You told me where to send the money.”

“I told you which invoices to process.”

“You knew those consultants didn't exist.”

Ethan looked away.

Vanessa began crying.

“I thought it was executive compensation. I thought Richard had arranged it.”

“You believed what was convenient.”

She wiped her cheeks.

“So did you.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Vanessa reached into her handbag.

She placed a flash drive on the table.

“Richard keeps copies of everything.”

Ethan stared at it.

“Where did you get that?”

“He asked me to archive some old correspondence. I made a backup.”

“What's on it?”

“Emails. Invoices. Account instructions.”

Ethan stepped toward her.

“Give it to me.”

Vanessa pulled back.

“No.”

“Vanessa.”

“I'm taking it to an attorney.”

His face darkened.

“You'll destroy both of us.”

She looked at him with sudden clarity.

“You already did that.”

She walked toward the door.

Ethan followed.

“Wait.”

Vanessa turned.

For one brief moment, he considered telling her the truth.

That Richard had been manipulating him for years.

That Evelyn had never been supposed to discover the arrangement.

That the marriage he had used as a ladder had become the only real thing in his life.

Instead, he said, “Don't forget who gave you everything.”

Vanessa opened the door.

“No, Ethan.”

Her voice broke.

“I won't forget who made me think cruelty was success.”

After she left, Ethan received a message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph.

Evelyn entering her prenatal appointment.

Beneath it were six words.

Richard wants the trust documents. Today.
