Chapter 1 - Don’t Eat That“ETHAN! DON’T EAT THAT!”

The scream came from a three-year-old.

That was why, for one fatal second, nobody moved.

Ethan Moretti sat at the center of a forty-foot birthday table beneath golden chandeliers, a forkful of white frosting halfway to his mouth.

Blue balloons floated above him.

Eight candles still smoked on the towering cake.

Hundreds of guests filled the ballroom of Dominic Moretti’s Manhattan mansion.

Then Lily ran.

Her lemon-yellow dress flashed between chairs.

Her tiny hand struck Ethan’s dessert plate.

It hit the ivory marble floor.

SMASH.

White frosting scattered across broken porcelain.

Ethan recoiled.

“Lily! Why?!”

Music stopped.

Conversation died.

Every head turned.

Dominic Moretti rose.

The movement was so sudden that two nearby guards straightened automatically.

The feared thirty-eight-year-old head of the Moretti organization wore a charcoal suit, black silk tie and an expression that had terrified men twice his age.

“What happened?”

Sophia reached her daughter first.

“I’m so sorry.”

She dropped to her knees, pulling Lily against her navy dress.

“Baby, what did you do?”

Lily did not answer.

She was not looking at Sophia.

She was not looking at Dominic.

Her wide brown eyes remained fixed on the birthday cake.

Dominic saw that.

His anger changed.

Not disappeared.

Changed.

He stepped around the shattered plate.

“Everyone stay where you are.”

The security chief, Frank Mercer, moved toward him.

“Boss—”

Dominic lifted one hand.

Frank stopped.

Dominic crouched several feet from Lily.

He did not touch her.

“Lily.”

The little girl’s lower lip trembled.

“What did you see?”

Sophia looked sharply at him.

“Dominic—”

“It’s okay.”

Nothing about Dominic looked okay.

But his voice became quiet.

“Lily, look at me.”

Slowly, she did.

“You’re not in trouble.”

Lily swallowed.

Then her tiny hand rose.

She pointed toward the service corridor behind the burgundy curtains.

“A man.”

Dominic followed her finger.

“What man?”

“The bad man.”

Sophia’s face changed.

“What bad man, sweetheart?”

Lily whispered, “He put white stuff.”

“Where?”

Lily pointed at Ethan’s untouched cake.

“In Ethan’s frosting.”

A crystal glass slipped from someone’s hand across the ballroom.

Nobody reacted to the sound.

Dominic stood.

Ethan shoved his chair backward.

“Dad?”

Dominic reached him immediately.

“Come here.”

Ethan moved beside his father.

Dominic placed one hand behind his son’s shoulder.

“Nobody touches that cake.”

Frank was already signaling guards.

Two men blocked the dessert table.

Another closed the ballroom doors.

The fourth moved toward the corridor.

“Stop,” Dominic said.

The guard froze.

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“No one goes into that hallway until Mercer checks it.”

Frank nodded.

“Understood.”

Sophia picked Lily up.

Her daughter buried her face against Sophia’s neck.

Dominic looked down at the broken plate.

Frosting had splashed across the marble.

A few seconds later, Ethan would have eaten it.

Maybe nothing would have happened.

Maybe everything would have.

Dominic looked at Lily.

“How did you see him?”

Lily would not answer.

Sophia whispered, “She went looking for the bathroom earlier.”

Frank turned.

“The bathroom?”

Sophia nodded.

“She got away from me for less than a minute. One of the staff brought her back.”

Dominic’s eyes moved to the service corridor.

That corridor connected the catering kitchen, storage rooms, staff elevator and security control annex.

It was not open to guests.

More importantly, it had been guarded since nine that morning.

Dominic looked at Frank.

“Who was assigned there?”

“Reynolds and Pike.”

Frank’s voice was steady.

His face was not.

Dominic noticed.

“Where are they?”

Frank touched his earpiece.

“Reynolds. Pike. Report to the ballroom entrance.”

Silence.

Frank tried again.

“Reynolds.”

Static.

His jaw tightened.

Dominic stepped closer.

“That room was guarded.”

“Yes.”

“Then explain how a stranger got close enough to my son’s cake for a three-year-old to see him.”

Frank glanced toward the corridor.

“I can’t.”

Dominic’s voice dropped.

“Wrong answer.”

Sophia held Lily tighter.

“Dominic, she’s frightened.”

He turned.

The anger left his face when he looked at the child.

“Take her upstairs.”

“No.”

Sophia’s answer surprised everyone.

Dominic stared.

“She saw something.”

“She’s three.”

“She may be the only witness.”

“She is my daughter before she is your witness.”

Silence.

Then Dominic nodded.

“You’re right.”

Sophia had expected resistance.

That frightened her almost more.

Dominic called his attorney.

Then a private physician.

Then, after a long pause, NYPD Detective Maya Chen, one of the few police officers he believed would treat an attack on Ethan as an attack on a child rather than an opportunity to parade Dominic in handcuffs.

He ordered staff to preserve every plate, utensil and serving tray.

Nobody touched the frosting.

Nobody left the mansion.

Twenty minutes later, Frank returned from the corridor.

His expression had darkened.

“Reynolds is unconscious in the camera room.”

Sophia gasped.

“Is he alive?”

“Yes. Paramedics are checking him.”

“And Pike?” Dominic asked.

“Missing.”

The ballroom seemed to shrink.

Dominic looked toward the black service doorway.

“Camera footage?”

Frank hesitated.

Dominic saw it.

“What?”

“Seven minutes are gone.”

“Gone how?”

“The corridor feed was manually disabled.”

“By whom?”

“We don’t know.”

Dominic walked toward Frank until only a foot separated them.

“You control security.”

“Yes.”

“You control access badges.”

“Yes.”

“You assigned the guards.”

“Yes.”

Frank’s jaw tightened.

Dominic’s voice became almost gentle.

“So either someone beat my security…”

He glanced toward Ethan.

“…or someone inside it opened the door.”

Frank said nothing.

Behind Dominic, Lily lifted her face from Sophia’s shoulder.

“Mommy.”

“Yes, baby?”

“The man had a shiny bird.”

Sophia frowned.

“What?”

Lily touched her own shirt near the collar.

“Here.”

Dominic slowly turned.

“A bird?”

Lily nodded.

“Silver bird.”

Frank Mercer went completely still.

Dominic saw it immediately.

“You recognize that.”

Frank’s eyes remained on Lily.

“No.”

“You just stopped breathing.”

Frank looked at Dominic.

“I said no.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“Then I’m going to ask once more.”

Lily clung to Sophia.

Ethan watched his father.

Guards watched Frank.

Dominic’s voice was low enough that everyone had to listen.

“What silver bird?”

May you like

Frank finally looked toward the dark service corridor.

And for the first time in fifteen years of working for Dominic Moretti, the security chief looked afraid.
