Chapter 10 - The Camera Vincent Missed

The hidden recorder had been installed by Edward.
Not to catch Vincent.
To monitor caregivers after a previous nighttime fall.
Edward had forgotten about it.
Vincent had apparently never known it existed.
The footage changed everything.
At 12:46 p.m., Vincent entered the memorial room alone.
He inspected the coffin.
Adjusted the flowers.
Placed documents on the table.
At 1:03, he carried Edward’s medical cushion into the room.
At 1:12, the visible smart-home camera indicator went dark.
At 1:38, Vincent returned pushing Edward’s wheelchair.
Edward was awake.
The footage contained no clear audio.
It did not need much.
Edward’s fear was visible.
Vincent leaned close to him.
Edward repeatedly shook his head as far as his motor control allowed.
Vincent removed the side support from the wheelchair.
Then lifted him.
At 1:41, Edward was placed in the coffin.
At 1:44, Vincent partially lowered the lid.
Then he left the room.
For fourteen minutes.
Nia could not watch those fourteen minutes.
She stood from the conference table.
“Turn it off.”
Bell paused the video.
Edward’s eyes were wet.
Nia moved beside him.
“Dad.”
He looked away.
She placed her hand over his.
“You survived.”
His fingers trembled beneath hers.
The device spoke.
“I thought you would find me dead.”
Nia swallowed.
“You’re here.”
“I was afraid.”
“You’re allowed to be.”
Edward looked at her.
She realized she had almost said the wrong thing.
You’re strong.
He had heard that his entire life.
As if disability required permanent bravery.
As if fear would be failure.
So she said something different.
“You never have to make this easier for me.”
His eyes closed.
A tear slid down his cheek.
Bell waited quietly.
When Edward was ready, the video continued.
At 1:58, Vincent returned.
He opened the lid wider.
Checked Edward.
Then held up several pages.
He placed a pen between Edward’s fingers.
Nia’s stomach turned.
The video showed Edward’s hand jerking uncontrollably.
Vincent moved the paper beneath it.
“What is he doing?”
Bell answered.
“Attempting to create marks resembling signatures.”
Edward typed.
“He said if I cooperated he would let me out.”
Nia stared at him.
“Did you believe him?”
“No.”
“What did you do?”
“Ruined signatures.”
Despite everything, Nia almost smiled.
The footage showed exactly that.
Vincent became visibly frustrated.
He threw one sheet aside.
Then removed his phone.
At 2:07, he held it above Edward’s face.
“He was recording,” Nia said.
Bell nodded.
Edward selected:
“He made me repeat words.”
“What words?”
Edward’s jaw tightened.
“Nia.”
Her heart stopped.
“What about me?”
“He told me to say you were unstable.”
Nia sat down.
Bell asked, “Did you?”
Edward looked ashamed.
The device spoke.
“I said some words.”
Nia felt a wound open.
Then Edward continued.
“He threatened you.”
Her anger disappeared instantly.
“What did he say?”
“That if I did not cooperate, he would make sure you were charged with helping him.”
Nia looked toward the forged emails.
The false medical records.
The fake signatures.
Vincent had built leverage.
Against Edward.
Against Nia.
Against everyone.
“He wanted a recording of Dad saying I was mentally unstable.”
Bell nodded.
“Potentially to support the forged incapacity narrative.”
Nia looked at Edward.
“What exactly did you say?”
Edward selected the words slowly.
“Nia has struggled.”
Nia winced.
“I said you needed help.”
She understood.
Out of context, those words could sound devastating.
“What happened next?”
Edward’s eyes shifted toward the screen.
At 2:21, another person entered the memorial room.
Graham Vale.
Nia leaned forward.
Vale approached the coffin.
He looked down at Edward.
Then turned violently toward Vincent.
Even without audio, the argument was obvious.
Vale pointed toward Edward.
Vincent pointed toward the documents.
Vale shook his head repeatedly.
At one point, he appeared to say something directly toward Edward.
Edward watched.
Bell paused the video.
“Can you tell us what he said?”
Edward selected words.
“He said: This was never part of the deal.”
Nia stared.
“Graham didn’t know?”
Edward continued.
“He knew fraud.”
Bell’s posture changed.
“But not this?”
“No.”
Nia felt no relief.
Knowing fraud was enough.
Vale had still entered a room where a living disabled man lay inside a coffin and left without helping him.
That was its own choice.
The video resumed.
Vale stormed out.
Vincent remained.
At 3:04, he made a phone call.
At 3:19, he adjusted the flowers.
At 4:36, he reactivated the visible camera.
One minute later, Nia and Claire entered.
Bell stopped the footage.
“This will materially change the case.”
Nia barely heard him.
She was staring at one final detail.
At 3:04, while Vincent spoke on the phone, he held a document against the table.
The hidden camera captured part of the header.
CONNECTICUT CERTIFICATE OF DEATH.
Someone had prepared it before Edward was dead.
And at the bottom of the page was the printed name of a physician.
Dr. Samuel Kline.
May you like
Nia knew that name.
He had been Edward’s doctor for eleven years.
