Chapter 18 - The Meeting Isabella Denied

Isabella did not deny it.
That hurt Emma more than she expected.
“You told us you were meeting an auditor.”
“I was.”
“You were also meeting Victoria.”
“Yes.”
Vincent looked furious.
“Why?”
Isabella sat inside the library of his residence.
She seemed suddenly very old.
“Victoria contacted me three days before the gala.”
“What did she want?”
“To make a deal.”
Emma stared.
“What kind?”
“She said Leonard had lost control of the financial structure.”
Vincent laughed bitterly.
“She blamed Leonard?”
“She said he had begun moving money independently.”
“Was that true?”
“Partly.”
Isabella explained.
Victoria claimed the original system had been designed for aggressive but legal fees.
Leonard escalated it into outright theft.
She offered documents proving some of Leonard’s unauthorized transfers.
In exchange, she wanted Isabella to stop investigating Northstar.
Emma asked, “Why would she expose Leonard?”
“Because frightened conspirators sacrifice each other.”
“What did you say?”
“I told her to bring proof.”
“And the gala was the exchange.”
“Yes.”
Vincent paced.
“So she knew you had the ledger because you told her?”
“I told her I had records.”
“Mother.”
“I needed her to believe I could expose her.”
“And instead you nearly got hit.”
Isabella’s expression became hard.
“I did not expect violence.”
“No one does until it arrives.”
Emma heard her own anger.
Isabella looked at her.
“You’re right.”
Emma sat.
“Did Daniel Mercer know about the meeting?”
“Yes. He was supposed to receive whatever Victoria gave me.”
“Where was he?”
“He never arrived.”
Claire checked records.
Daniel Mercer’s phone had gone offline two hours before the gala.
He had not disappeared.
He had been in a car accident on Lake Shore Drive.
A minor collision.
No serious injuries.
But enough to delay him.
Police reports showed the other driver admitted running a red light.
Coincidence, apparently.
Emma disliked coincidences.
Claire cautioned her.
“Not everything is a conspiracy.”
Emma nodded.
Still, she asked who the driver was.
A twenty-one-year-old student.
No connection.
Sometimes a crash was only a crash.
Daniel finally came to the office.
He carried eight months of compliance records.
He had resigned after Leonard ordered him to close an internal inquiry into Northstar.
“Why didn’t you go directly to Vincent?” Emma asked.
Daniel looked at Vincent.
“With respect, your executive office rejected two meeting requests.”
Vincent frowned.
“I never saw them.”
“Leonard’s office controlled access.”
Another blind spot.
Daniel continued.
“I sent a summary through internal compliance.”
“To whom?”
“General counsel.”
Claire looked disturbed.
“Which general counsel?”
“Peter Raines.”
Peter Raines had retired six months earlier.
Vincent asked for his current location.
Arizona.
Federal investigators interviewed him.
Peter admitted receiving Daniel’s concerns.
He forwarded them to Leonard.
Then accepted Leonard’s assurance that the issue was resolved.
No bribe.
No secret payment.
Just cowardice disguised as procedure.
Emma found that almost worse.
At the end of Daniel’s records was a spreadsheet.
It tracked suspected diversions.
Twenty-one million dollars.
More than anyone had known.
One entry stood out.
$4.6 million transferred to a property entity called ELG Holdings.
“What does ELG mean?” Emma asked.
Nobody knew.
The company owned a lakefront house north of Chicago.
Purchased in cash.
Claire searched property records.
The beneficial owner was hidden behind a trust.
But the property-tax correspondence address belonged to Victoria Langford’s personal accountant.
Federal agents obtained a warrant.
Inside the house they found no one.
But they found file cabinets.
Donor records.
Bank statements.
Northstar invoices.
And in a locked drawer:
Isabella’s ivory purse.
The blue ledger was gone.
But the USB drive was still inside.
So was something nobody expected.
A handwritten note.
Victoria’s handwriting was later confirmed.
LEONARD WANTS OUT. VINCENT MUST CARRY APPROVAL RISK IF THIS BREAKS.
Vincent stared at the sentence.
“They planned to use me as the fall guy.”
Claire nodded.
Emma looked at the date.
The note had been written eight months before the gala.
Exactly when Daniel Mercer resigned.
Victoria had not improvised after Isabella began investigating.
She had been preparing Vincent’s collapse for months.
Then a federal agent called Claire.
They had found a hidden compartment inside the lake house desk.
Inside was a second phone.
It contained messages between Victoria and Leonard.
Most were encrypted.
One was readable.
From Victoria:
IF ISABELLA REFUSES THE DEAL, TAKE THE BOOK.
Leonard’s response came one minute later.
AND THE WAITRESS?
May you like
Victoria:
SHE’S NOBODY.
