Chapter 11 - The Man at the Tunnel

Calvin had remembered the tunnel after seeing the old fire diagrams.

Or perhaps guilt had finally forced him to remember.

“Tell us everything,” Mateo said.

They stood inside Blackridge’s ruined foundation while rain began falling.

Calvin stared at the ground.

“Vale called me before the fire units arrived. He said there might be a family security matter.”

“You went there?”

“Yes.”

“Before dispatch?”

“Yes.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

“You lied in your report.”

“Yes.”

“What did you see?”

Calvin closed his eyes.

“A woman running from the maintenance building carrying a baby.”

Aurelio’s breathing changed.

“Esperanza.”

“Yes.”

“And Kessler?”

“He stepped out of a vehicle.”

“What did he do?”

“He reached for the child.”

Mateo moved forward.

Calvin raised both hands.

“I stopped him.”

Everyone went silent.

“You?” Vincent asked.

Calvin looked at his son.

“I wasn’t completely gone yet.”

He explained.

Kessler had told Calvin that Esperanza had kidnapped a Vargas child.

Calvin had drawn his service weapon and ordered both parties to stop.

Esperanza screamed that people were burning inside the house.

Kessler insisted the infant must be handed over.

Then an explosion lit the sky.

Calvin looked toward the fire.

When he turned back, Esperanza was running.

Kessler could have shot her.

He did not, because Calvin was watching.

“What happened later?” Mateo asked.

“Kessler told Vale I had seen the woman.”

“And Vale?”

“Paid me.”

Aurelio stared.

“For silence.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was alive.”

“For one night.”

“What does that mean?”

“Three days later Vale showed me hospital paperwork saying you died from smoke inhalation under another name.”

Rachel swore softly.

“Fabricated.”

Calvin nodded.

“I wanted to believe it.”

“No,” Aurelio said.

Calvin looked at him.

“You wanted the money to make it true.”

Calvin accepted the judgment.

“Yes.”

Vincent walked away.

His father called after him.

“Son.”

Vincent turned.

“You taught me that a badge meant you tell the truth when lying is easier.”

Calvin’s face collapsed.

“I know.”

“No. You taught it because you wanted me to become the man you weren’t.”

Vincent left.

Aurelio watched him go.

Later, Mateo found Vincent beside the SUVs.

“You don’t have to work today.”

“Yes, I do.”

“You nearly lost your father yesterday.”

Vincent stared toward the ruins.

“I lost the father I thought I had eleven years ago. I just found out today.”

Mateo understood more than he wanted to.

That evening, Marcus’s analysts searched the executive keycard.

Kessler’s old access record had been deleted from corporate servers, but backup archives remained with an insurance carrier.

The night of the fire, his card entered Blackridge at 12:51 a.m.

It exited at 2:09.

The first emergency call came at 2:18.

Kessler had left nine minutes before the fire was officially reported.

Mateo called Sebastian.

No greeting.

“Where is Edwin Kessler?”

Sebastian paused.

“I have no idea.”

“He worked for you.”

“Years ago.”

“He was at Blackridge.”

Silence.

Mateo continued.

“We have access records.”

Sebastian’s voice changed.

“Be careful.”

“Is that a threat?”

“It’s advice.”

“You murdered Elena.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

“Then say it.”

“What?”

“Say you did not order anyone to harm Elena, Javier or Aurelio.”

Another pause.

Too long.

Sebastian answered.

“I never ordered Elena’s death.”

Mateo’s blood went cold.

He had not mentioned ordering her death.

“You rehearsed that sentence.”

Sebastian disconnected.

Rachel immediately told Mateo not to call again.

“You are now dealing with potential homicide evidence. Stop warning suspects.”

“He’s my brother.”

“He is also possibly the person who tried to kill your nephew.”

Mateo looked toward Aurelio.

The boy sat on the floor sorting Esperanza’s papers by date.

Twelve years old.

Working like a detective because adults had failed him.

Aurelio lifted one document.

“What’s ‘Cedar Foundation’?”

Rachel took it.

A charitable trust.

Sebastian chaired the board.

Payments from Cedar Foundation had gone to Harbor North.

Harbor North paid Calvin.

Marcus searched deeper.

Another beneficiary appeared.

Blackridge Restoration Services.

A company created two weeks before the fire.

Its only employee had been Edwin Kessler.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

A surveillance team had located Kessler.

At Bellhaven International Airport.

Boarding a private aircraft.

Destination: Switzerland.

Mateo stood.

“Stop the plane.”

Marcus shook his head.

“We’re private security.”

“Call police.”

“On what charge?”

Rachel answered.

“Witness tampering. Attempted evidence theft if we can link the terminal attacker. Possibly conspiracy.”

Calvin stepped forward.

“I can link him.”

Everyone turned.

“I kept the original payment instructions.”

“Where?”

Calvin looked at Vincent.

“My house.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“You said there was nothing else.”

“I lied.”

Aurelio muttered, “People in this family do that a lot.”

Calvin looked at him.

“You’re right.”

Then Marcus received a message.

Kessler’s aircraft had begun taxiing.

May you like

And attached to the flight manifest was another passenger name.

Adrian Vale.
